Miep Gies

[edit]

I reverted the word from husband to partner in that part of the sentence for a purely grammatical reason. The article states:

"She became a close friend of his family as did her partner, Jan Gies (October 18, 1905–January 26, 1993) whom she married in July 1941"

It wouldn't be grammatical to say that Miep married her husband. She didn't. She married her partner, or fiance, and he thus became her husband, as it says. Yallery Brown 00:19, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reed College

[edit]

As one of the other editors of long-standing on the Reed page, your (further) participation in the edit war with User:IronDuke would be helpful, if you can stomach it. Hope to see you there. -- Gnetwerker 18:02, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've been keeping an eye on it and hoping it doesn't get out of hand. I'll see what I can do. Common sense will prevail in the end. Although, in the mean time, it's kind of fun to see manifested the prejudices of those with an axe to grind. Matt Gies 18:48, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Matt, thanks for your contributions to the Reed page. However, you recently added this line: "Actual insiders of Reed, however, can cite many instances of students being busted simply for violating drug and alcohol laws too conspicuously" to the page. As I am sure you know, the Drug Use section has been the subject of much recent controversy, and we struggled to have every line of it supported by a citation from a public source. This page: http://web.reed.edu/community_safety/information/crime/crime_statistics.html contains some crime-related stats that you might want to use to make your point, and there may be other public records. I don't disagree that there have been cops and arrests on campus, but in any case is I would request that you consider rewording or restating your point to make it WP:V. Thanks -- Gnetwerker 01:39, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your comments at Talk:Circumcision

[edit]

I'm not sure if you were talking about circumcision when you implied that I had been 'mutilated' as a child, but if so, you should check my user page. I was circumcised as an adult. Jakew 19:17, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks; actually Dabljuh already set me straight on that point. So you're not the poster child of infant circumcision, but you're still an example of the impenetrable mind of the circimcision proponent. Matt Gies 19:44, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
How kind. ;) Jakew 21:01, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Please do not add personal attacks to vandal's userpages, it's still Personal Attack even if they are vandals. User:66.228.224.226 has been listed for banning because of his vandalism so justice has been served. Just don't let the vandals get to you. Suri Cruise

[edit]

It is considered vandalism to remove a "fact" tag (citation request) from an article without providing the requested citation. You did this to the Suri Cruise article. Please do not do it again or you may be blocked. --Yamla 14:20, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is considered spineless to disassociate yourself from your own opinions by the use of the passive voice. Further, I consider it vandalism, to add a "fact" tag without damn good reason. In this instance, the "fact" in dispute can scarcely be disputed. The only objection raised was that the surname, "Cruise", could not yet be ascertained. But she has been referred to by this name in countless media outlets already. The addition of the "fact" tag was purely mean-spirited obstructionism on the part of the "Delete" cadre. Please stop patronizing me. Matt Gies 15:56, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tsar Bomba

[edit]

Regarding the history of Article Tsar Bomba, your actions and help in reverting vadalism are very much appreciated. However, adding expletives into the comment may not be. In future could you possibly stick to a breif explanationof the edit in a concise and clean manner? Thanks, Stu Hacking talk 15:01, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, it got your attention, didn't it? Honestly, I don't see anything wrong with profanity on wikipedia per se, as long as it's on edit summaries or talk and not in articles. And it helps me vent my frustration at the website not letting me submit my edits because the vandals already superceded that version. Matt Gies 15:06, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeh it got pretty bad, but I agree 'cleaner' edit summary would be better (btw, I was brought there by tawkerbot2 alerts). Something like ADMIN- PAGE PROTECTION NEEDED would do a pretty good job of getting my attention :) Anyway I think I've got them all now, let's see... Petros471 15:10, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I wrestled with myself on how I should word that sentence in The Station nightclub fire article. Thanks for the help. - NGC6254 15:55, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gaddafi

[edit]

Why do you keep removing Gaddafi from that list? To most folk he is "Gaddafi" or "Colonel Gaddafi", and his first name is not well known. So where's the problem? --MacRusgail 10:57, 22 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The vast majority of references to him that I have seen and heard refer to him as Muammar Gaddafi. That's why--I seldom have seen his surname used without his given name. Matt Gies 16:14, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have to admit, I didn't know his first name until I looked it up. I'm used to thinking of him by his surname, or "Col. G./Q.". The only worry I had was that Muammar may be some kind of title, like the "U", in "U Thant" rather than a real first name. --MacRusgail 16:56, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to merge article Amish clip into Roach clip

[edit]

Hi there, I just added merge proposal tags onto these articles, and I saw in the history of Roach clip that you are the creator. I just wanted to let you know I've added the merge tags, in case you wish to add comments to the talk page. ColtsScore 00:49, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good idea; you have my support. Thanks for the heads-up. Matt Gies 20:58, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I was hoping for your opinion on the articles I created for these venues, seeing as I used Che Cafe, The Smell, 924 Gilman Street, ABC No Rio, and The Casbah as models for them. Please respond on my talk page, or, any corresponding AfDs. Thanks! PT (s-s-s-s) 00:24, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My contributions to the Gilman article have been minimal, and I know nothing about these other venues. However, for what it's worth, your new articles look decent enough at first glance. Matt Gies 19:42, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Also, I saw that you've done some work on the Dr. Demento article. I thought you may be a better authority than I to speak on the Worm Quartet AfD. PT (s-s-s-s) 21:21, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Carl Proujan

[edit]

The Ry Cooder page states that he was a roomate at Reed, though this was added by the same anon who added him to the Reed page, so is suspect. The prior argument was not about whether or not he was an alum, but whether he was notable. As the author of quite a number of natural history books, I would consider him notable, but not worth the fight with the Reed page's favorite troll. I'll go down to Powell's one of these days and look at a book cover and see if it is listed there. Looking in the thesis tower isn't really reliable -- regrettably, many old theses have disappeared, and as you noted, he may not have graduated from Reed. - Gnetwerker 00:54, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yo!

Cleanup to my user page

[edit]

Please do not remove items from my user page or its talk page. It is considered vandalism, and is not appreciated. Weatherman90 23:46, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, what I deleted from your talk page was itself vandalism. You're welcome. Please cease to add this garbage. It cheapens the very concept of Wikipedia. Matt Gies 08:38, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry you feel that way. Weatherman90 16:01, 2 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And I'm sorry that you seem to be suffering from mental illness... Matt Gies 21:21, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted your addition to List of city nicknames

[edit]

Was that vandalsim? If not, please provide a citation. Jerry lavoie 00:54, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely not. Google it; it's definitely out there. I've heard it from several Portland natives. Matt Gies 01:10, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You mention a "formatting problem" on Table of keyboard shortcuts regarding using table header markup ("!"); I don't see this problem unless it's the header formatting itself, which is intended to set off new menus. What are you seeing? (re my talk) æ²  2007‑02‑12t22:44z

I find it quite distracting to have some commands bolded and all the rest in normal text. Perhaps what is in order is to break this one long table into several tables, each with its own obvious (as in, at the top of its own table) header. Matt Gies 23:06, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding edit made to WrestleMania 22

[edit]

[1] Thank you for rewriting the opening paragraph. I would appreciate it if you could talk to User:TJ Spyke about this. This user continues to believe that "and emanated from... " is still grammatically correct when used in the paragraphs of other wrestling events, despite having now more than 5 other users who disagree. If you could help convince this user to stop reverting, we at WP:PW would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. -- bulletproof 3:16 23:08, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This isn't really my battle, but for what it's worth you may tell the fellow that, in my opinion, "emanated from", while technically and grammatically correct, is simply bad writing by reason of being obfuscatory and imprecise. It sounds pompous when all that is meant to be conveyed is the origin of a broadcast. Wikipedia has a lot of readers, and I'd be so presumptuous as to say that wrestling fans are not generally among the most literate (present company excluded)--so such a circumlocution is a disservice to the predominant readership. And I'm sorry for the delayed reply; I've been busy lately. Matt Gies 00:32, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Could you please tell him yourself? He doesn't listen to me because he has already heard my views. Please talk to him about this. -- bulletproof 3:16 06:30, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Now, I wash my hands of this matter. Matt Gies 21:06, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dealing with vandals

[edit]

Next time you get "fans" like 68.36.67.190, you can warn them using the {{uw-npa1}}-{{uw-npa4}} series and take them to AIV right away. —dgiestc 21:12, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Black Parade

[edit]

Actually ray is lead and Frank is rhythm. 21:52, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

My mistake. I thought the edit was a facetious one because of the parenthetical "I don't love you", which I interpreted not as a song title but as an editorializing comment. Sorry about the mix-up. Matt Gies 23:09, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Warning vandals

[edit]

I see you've started fixing a lot more vandalism. That is good. When you fix vandalism, you should consider leaving the vandal a warning from the WP:WARN set. Often this will convince them to stop, and if it doesn't, it helps build a case so they can be reported to WP:AIV and be blocked by an admin. —dgiestc 23:02, 28 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Warning Vandals

[edit]

Hi, I've seen you reverting vandalism recently, but I have noticed that you did not leave a warning message on the user/IP's talk page. You can simply use the {{uw-vandalism1}}, {{uw-vandalism2}}}}, {{uw-vandalism3}}, {{uw-vandalism4}}, and {{uw-vandalism4im}} templates for warning vandals. Thank you. SmileToday☺(talk to me , My edits) 22:47, 2 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I forgot to mention several things. First, you can use User:Adam1213/warn to make it easier. Next, you should add a subst: directly after the first two brackets, like this {{subst:uw-vandalism... Lastly, you can find a whole list of warning templates under WP:WARN. Thank you again! SmileToday☺(talk to me , My edits) 21:40, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I probably just did a Google image search for Joe Camel and uploaded the first one that came up. I would imagine that the original source and creator is the RJR Tobacco Co. Matt Gies 16:49, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

united States Declaration of Indepedence

[edit]

Please do not ignore the directive on the top of the article, and the discussion thread in talk. Currently, there is a super-majority in favor of "united." If you disagree, and can cite relevant historical arguments to support such a position, please do so in the article's talk page. Thanks. - MSTCrow 22:33, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It didn't even occur to me to look at the Talk page; I instantly assumed it to be vandalism. I assure you that most readers will have the same reaction as I did; and the debate, frankly, strikes me as quite absurd. I note that the article currently retains the majuscule I added.
