Tori Amos: rape vs sexual assault
[edit]So CNN.com says she was raped, and Tori Amos herself says it was more like the threat of mutilation. This is why I suggested we leave the text to saying "sexually assaulted" until someone comes along and elaborates and provides sources. Please refer to the exerpt from Hot Press that was linked.
“ | "I'll never talk about it at this level again but let me ask you. Why have I survived that kind of night, when other women didn't", she says.
"How am I alive to tell you this tale when he was ready to slice me up? In the song I say it was 'Me and a Gun' but it wasn't a gun. It was a knife he had. And the idea was to take me to his friends and cut me up, and he kept telling me that, for hours. And if he hadn't needed more drugs I would have been just one more news report, where you see the parents grieving for their daughter". "And I was singing hymns, as I say in the song, because he told me to. I sang to stay alive. Yet I survived that torture, which left me urinating all over myself and left me paralysed for years. That's what that night was all about, mutilation, more than violation through sex". "I really do feel as though I was psychologically mutilated that night and that now I'm trying to put the pieces back together again. Through love, not hatred. And through my music. My strength has been to open again, to life, and my victory is the fact that, despite it all, I kept alive my vulnerability". |

- That quote doesn't seem to lend any weight to the idea that she wasn't raped. She says the night was more about "mutilation" rather than "violation through sex", but that doesn't mean she wasn't raped, it just means that she thought the attacker's main motivation was mutilation rather than rape. This seems to be heavily original research, if you don't mind me saying. Whereas I have provided a very reliable, heavily reviewed, source that clearly says she was raped. If there are other sources, I would be happy to discuss them, but I really don't think the above one is of much value for the reasons I stated. MillieTant (talk) 21:51, 18 April 2008 (UTC)
- Right. What I meant really in my message was that it really needs to be elaborated on and sourced. There have been questions as to what exactly happened to her and I was interpreting the excerpt in a different way. Samuel Grant (talk) 19:49, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
