"This handbook deals only with the Class I line-haul carriers. The precise number of such roads is confused by the grouping into systems of one or more of them. The Missouri Pacific, for example, controls the so-called Gulf Coast Lines, which are, in fact, four separate Class I railroads. The Soo Line operates, as agent for the trustee, the Wisconsin Central. The New York Connecting Railway, which owns no equipment, is owned jointly by the Pennsylvania and the New Haven, and operated by the latter. But counting all the Class I roads that report separately to the ICC, the total included here comes to 127."
