To browse help related pages see the help menu or help directory. Or you can use the search box at Help:contents (accessed at any time by clicking Help displayed on the left side of all pages). There is also a copy of a comprehensive published book, at Wikipedia: The Missing Manual.

Tip: Sign your name - At the end of your comments simply type four tildes (~), like this: ~~~~. If you are using the edit toolbar option (it usually appears above the edit screen by default), click the signature icon: , to add the four tildes; this will automatically produce your username and the time, aiding the flow of discussion.

Finding your way around

To understand Wikipedia, it is easiest to think of this website as having two types of pages: pages that are part of the encyclopedia itself, and pages of the community (used by contributors to help build and operate the encyclopedia).

To find your way around the encyclopedia, either enter a term into the search box at the top-right side of the screen, or go to Wikipedia's table of contents. Clicking on links like this one will take you to relevant or related pages. If you know the name of the topic you are looking for, simply type it into Wikipedia's search box and press Go.

If you would like to look around Wikipedia to see what's on it, keep in mind that many major subjects have a root article on the Wikipedia:Contents/Overviews page and an outline on the Wikipedia:Contents/Outlines page.

There are some other "Tables of Contents" type pages on Wikipedia. They are:

Wikipedia:Contents/Portals – portals are digests of excerpts and things to do
Wikipedia:Contents/Lists – this is a list of item lists (like List of dog breeds)

Wikipedia also has an alphabetical index of all of its articles, and a categorical index of most of them.

Wikipedia's community pages include instructions, help contents, policies and guidelines, processes, discussion forums, places to make requests, pages to report problems, and user pages. These are all pages which we use to develop the encyclopedia and to communicate with each other in that mission. We even have an online newspaper, The Signpost, that reports on developments that affect the encyclopedia and its community, from within and abroad.

Collaboration groups

WikiProjects are social groups of contributors (anyone may join them), who work together as a team to improve Wikipedia. These groups often focus on a specific topic area (for example, women's history) or a specific kind of task (for example, copyediting). WikiProject are one of the central places for editor collaboration and the organization of specific topics. The English Wikipedia currently has over 2,000 WikiProjects and they all have a variety of tasks to get done (for example, Canadian articles to improve).

December 2016

Hello, I'm Zackmann08. Thank you for your recent contributions to Oomerabad. I noticed that when you added the image to the infobox, you added it as a thumbnail. In the future, please do not use thumbnails when adding images to an infobox (see WP:INFOBOXIMAGE). What does this mean? Well in the infobox, when you specify the image you wish to use, instead of doing it like this:

|image=[[File:SomeImage.jpg|thumb|Some image caption]]

Instead just supply the name of the image. So in this case you can simply do:

|image=SomeImage.jpg.

There will then be a separate parameter for the image caption such as |caption=Some image caption. Please note that this is a generic form message I am leaving on your page because you recently added a thumbnail to an infobox. The specific parameters for the image and caption may be different for the infobox you are using! Please consult the Template page for the infobox being used to see better documentation. Thanks! Reversion of table formatting

Hi there, I have reverted these edits of yours, because they don't make sense, and they are inconsistent with consensus arrived at through discussion here. Why don't they make sense? Easy to answer: If Raajakumara, Doddmane Hudga, Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna and Uppi 2 all grossed 40 crore, they should all be in the same rank position. It's not Wikipedia's place to arbitrarily decide that Raajakumara belongs in the #4 spot rather than in the #7 spot. This problem has implications all across the encyclopedia, because often editors will include statements like "the film is the seventh highest-grossing Kannada film". Is that statement true if it could also be the 4th highest-grossing film? Of course not. Organising them into the same ranking prevents us from giving preferential treatment to any one film, and thus, is consistent with our neutral point of view policy. Hi there, please stop posting false claims on your user page. You are not a reviewer, you are not a rollbacker, you are not a Senior Editor III, I doubt that you were adopted by Airplaneman, your userpage has not been vandalised 5 times, your user page has also not been vandalised 9 times, you have not made 44,000+ edits at Wikipedia, you have not made more than 400 edits at Wikipedia, you have not one of the 5000 most active Wikipedians, and you are not #1486 on the list of most active Wikipedians. Another editor has twice before [1][2] removed false claims. If you do this again, I'll interrupt your editing privileges. That would be a silly thing to be blocked for. Volunteers have other things to do than supervise user page falsehoods. If you want to play around with the templates, use your User:Nabeelgm/sandbox. Thank you. The article Mohit Baghel has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non notable actor. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mohit Baghel was deleted and other attempts to create this was also deleted as WP:G5. The only reason why I did not CSD this as WP:G4 was because the author has promised to add more references in the talk page, even though my searching does not indicate that there are any better references.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Highlights for this newsletter include:

BAG

BU Rob13 and Cyberpower678 are now members of the BAG (see RfBAG/BU Rob13 and RfBAG/Cyberpower678 3). BU Rob13 and Cyberpower678 are both administrators; the former operates BU RoBOT which does a plethora of tasks, while the latter operates Cyberbot I (which replaces old bots), Cyberbot II (which does many different things), and InternetArchiveBot which combats link rot. Welcome to the BAG!

BRFAs

We currently have 12 open bot requests at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval, and could use your help processing!

Discussions

Efforts at WP:CHECKWIKI to identify cosmetic fixes are still ongoing.
The RFC on COSMETICBOT has concluded with "a clear consensus exists to adopt the proposed language". The new wording is now live.
The venue for bot appeals and reexaminations has been changed from WP:BRFA to WP:BOTN (see discussion)
The Wikipedia:Bot owner's noticeboard is now the Wikipedia:Bots/Noticeboard (see discussion).

A historical correction was made to WP:BOTPOL (see discussion).
WP:HIDEBOTS now mentions how to hide all bots from your watchlist, not only specific bots.
The phabricator ticket T162685 is now closed, and we now have "#Bots-Framework" tag, so issues related to bot frameworks can be tracked.
Wikibits.js has been removed (see discussion).
21 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion).
WP:BOTISSUE has been updated to mention that BAG members can act as neutral mediators in bot-related disputes.
WP:INTERWIKIBOT has been updated to reflect the post-February 2013 practice of putting interwiki links on Wikidata, rather than on Wikipedia (see discussion).

Upcoming

HTML Tidy will be phased out in June 2018, or possibly earlier. This may affect some bots (see FAQ).

Wikimania

ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, Nabeelgm. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. Userpages

I’ve noticed that you also are asking other users to create their userpage, including an IP user. I have just deleted that talk page as there is no reason to pressure other users into creating userpages, especially IP users as at some point all IPs are re-assigned and a new user could edit from the same IP while having a userpage that has nothing to do with them. Userpages are a tiny part of what Wikipedia is and actually do not do anything to improve the encyclopedia, which is the primary purpose of Wikipedia, so please stop sending such messages or creating userpages for others unless explicitly asked to do so.

The edit summary limit has been increased to 1000 characters (see T6715). If a bot you operate relied on the old truncation limit (255 characters), please review/update your code, as overly long summaries can be disruptive/annoying. If you want to use extra characters to have more information in your edit summary, please do so intelligently.
You will soon be able to ping users from the edit summary (see T188469). If you wish to use this feature in your bot, please do so intelligently.

HTML Tidy will be phased out in June 2018, or possibly earlier. This may affect some bots (see FAQ).

{{Automated tools}}, a new template linking to user-activated tools and scripts has been created. It can be used in articles previews, and can be placed on any non-mainspace page/template (e.g. {{Draft article}}) to provide convenient links to editors.
AWB 5.10.0.0 is out, after nearly 20 months without updates. If you run an old version, you will be prompted to install the new version automatically. See the changelog for what's new. Note that the next version will require .NET Framework 4.5. Many thanks to Reedy and the AWB team.
BotWatch, "a listing of editors that have made >2 edits per minute [without] a bot flag", is being developed by SQL (see discussion).
Massive updates and improvements have been made to Citation bot in the past few months (see discussions, discussions, discussions). You can activate the bot here, amongst other methods.
HTML Tidy has been phased out (see Tech News #28).
{{Newbot}} has been reorganized a bit (diff). In particular, it links to previously approved BRFAs (see discussion).
Wikipedia:Bots#See also has been reorganized a bit (diff).
The bot dictionary has two new entries, context bot and context-sensitive edit.
The bot request header has been updated to include better guidance (see discussion).
The subcategories of Category:Wikipedia bot requests for approval have been sorted in a consistent manner to make past BRFAs easier to find.

@only I don't remember exactly as the block was made almost 3 years ago. When @Beeblebrox blocked me at that time a user was kinda updating false figures to the box office page of Indian cinema . So I had posted request for account deletion on his talk page. At the time I thought it was the right thing. But but again now I know exactly what I have to do and what not to, I don't actually remember other edits that were disruptive to the best of my knowledge and remembrance. Problem with your custom signature

You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.

The problem: Your preferences are set to interpret your custom signature as wikitext. However, your current custom signature does not contain any wikitext.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:

Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
Remove anything in the Signature: text box. (It might already be empty.)
Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)

Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:

Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page.
