September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close.

Stats

  • Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated.
  • We nearly wiped out the 2008 articles from the backlog—there were only 13 remaining when the drive closed.
  • We reduced the backlog by 725 articles (11.5%), so it was another successful drive.
  • A total of 59 barnstars will be awarded to 40 editors—well done, and congratulations to all.

Barnstars
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the July 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, you may have earned rollover words, which counted towards this month's barnstars (except for the leaderboard awards). Any unused word credits will be held over for the next drive, as long as you participated in the September drive. Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars. Click here to see a list of barnstar winners.

  • We will be holding our next drive in November. You can sign up here.

A huge "thank you" to all editors who helped clear the backlog and to others who helped out behind-the-scenes. See you at the next drive, and until then, please continue to help us work through the backlog. Happy editing!

Huggle

When you put an edit summary on Huggle, how does HG appear on the edit summary? Wayne Olajuwon chat 18:11, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)The system automaticly does it, but you can do the like

. Here is the format: ([[Wikipedia:Huggle|HG]]). Nascar1996 18:16, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it is automatically added to edits made with Huggle. Even the reverts with a custom edit summary have the (HG) added to them. ~NerdyScienceDude 18:52, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
I tried to reply on my user talk page with Huggle, but the HG didn't appear in the edit summary. Wayne Olajuwon chat 19:24, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
In this edit, the HG was included in the edit summary. Wayne Olajuwon chat 19:29, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
I added that HG. ~NerdyScienceDude 20:51, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Not a typo

This looks like a false positive (compare 178,000 results to 1,860). Be sure not to accept AWB's typo fixes unless you are sure it is accurate. –xenotalk 20:49, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Today is my first day using AWB. Thanks for pointing that out. ~NerdyScienceDude 20:51, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Cool, let me know if I can be of any assistance. I reported the false positive to WT:AWB/T. –xenotalk 20:52, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

A question

Hello, NSD. On the NASCAR race articles, am I only suppose to link a name in the article once, or in each section? When I am using AWB, it warns me if there are repeated links. Nascar1996 21:45, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

From WP:REPEATLINK:
In general, link only the first occurrence of an item. There are exceptions to this guideline, including these:
  • where the later occurrence is a long way from the first.
  • where the first link is in an infobox, navbox or similar meta-content.
  • where the links are in a table, as each row should stand on its own.
I haven't tried using the feature of AWB that removes repeated links. Hopefully the above helps. ~NerdyScienceDude 00:38, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
It does, and thanks. I still have a question, from the introduction to the ending of the post-race be too long away from the original? Nascar1996 00:51, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

St.philomena's

Dear User How did you know that the St.philomena's wikipedia page was being edited? and did someone ask you to monitor it? thankyou for doing so —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.27.196.125 (talk) 20:17, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

I am using a tool called Huggle. ~NerdyScienceDude 20:21, 22 October 2010 (UTC)
so it notifies you of changes? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.27.196.125 (talk) 20:25, 22 October 2010 (UTC)
Yes. It scans the recent changes feed. ~NerdyScienceDude 20:27, 22 October 2010 (UTC)
So you use this a lot?! did you ask for permission or did you just want to do it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.27.196.125 (talk) 20:37, 22 October 2010 (UTC)
I do use it a lot. All you need to use Huggle is to create an account, request for rollback permissions, install Huggle, and create your huggle.css page (click here to create) with enable=true. ~NerdyScienceDude 20:44, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Can the IP address be deleted from edited articles so that i can be left un identified? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hemcouture (talkcontribs) 21:04, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Ok change of request can you delete this ip address 92.27.196.125 off the St.philomena's article "edit history". I believe that you would be far more able than me as you probably know how to manually delete things where as I haven't a clue! I would pay you if I could! Thankyou! hemcouture —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hemcouture (talkcontribs) 21:35, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

I don't have the power to revision delete your IP from the contribution list. You can ask an administrator to do it for you, but I don't think they will. Anyway, welcome to Wikipedia! ~NerdyScienceDude 01:05, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

Good or bad?

Did the changes I made to Red Bull Racing Team good or bad? Do you think its better with the car descriptions or season by seaso, and finaly, does it read like a news article? I would like your opinion. Thanks Nascar1996 03:43, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

I think it looks good with the season by season prose, and it does not read like a news article in my opinion. ~NerdyScienceDude 01:59, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
I believe it works better, too. The car by car didn't make that much sense in my opinion. I did it to this article because most of the others will take days to do, such as Hendrick Motorsports. Nascar1996 02:03, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

HG vs. GLOO

What do you think is better: HG or GLOO? Wayne Olajuwon chat 23:23, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

I prefer using Huggle as it has more features. I use igloo when I'm on a Mac since Huggle won't work on a Mac. ~NerdyScienceDude 23:55, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Hello, when I was creating the newest section for the NASCAR portal, Portal:NASCAR/Championship standings, I wanted the third table to be below the others in the middle. However, it would squeeze inbetween the others. That table is hidden, and I was wondering if you would know how to fix it. Also, do you believe we should add colors to the tables that are similar to the portal colors? Thanks. Nascar1996 02:17, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Nevermind. I fixed the issue. Do you believe 2010 Price Chopper 400 is ready for GAN? If it is, why not you nominate it. I have two others (2010 Sylvania 300 & 2010 AAA 400) in the process. Nascar1996 14:15, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
I've nominated it. ~NerdyScienceDude 03:23, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
For the restrictor plate tracks (which has a lead change every lap), how would I write a good prose for them. Should I just ignore those races (except for the Daytona 500)? Nascar1996 17:51, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
You could write something similar to 2010 Coke Zero 400. ~NerdyScienceDude 18:06, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

I may be able to do that for the 500, I'm not going to be able to finish this race. Nascar1996 18:10, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

I may be able to finish it, after I double checked my scheduled. Nascar1996 18:20, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
OK. ~NerdyScienceDude 19:18, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
