Police threat and long-term abuse by an editor

Good afternoon, User:Nthep. I hope to find you well. My name is Dilip. I am writing to you as you are at the top of the Recently Active Admins list but, if you are unable to assist me, I will be happy if you can point me to another administrator who can. I considered taking this problem to the WP:ANI page but I think I would like some advice about it first because WP:ANI looks like the deep end of the pool to me. I will give you an outline of the problems here and will say more if you have questions. I have made occasional edits in the past but I am a doctor and normally much too busy, especially in the last two years. I am now in isolation myself and I decided to do some editing to pass the time. As I am a lifelong fan of cricket, I thought I would try to help improve some cricket articles and I began yesterday at Pat Cummins where I encountered an editor called User:Blue Square Thing.

This editor behaves as someone who must exert control over cricket articles. He persistently reverts other editors' input, especially anything that concerns the Indian Premier League (IPL) and he often accompanies his edits with disparaging and insulting comments. This conduct is nothing new as I have gone down his contributions list and there are numerous edit summaries which I would describe as uncivil to some degree, ranging from condescension via sarcasm to rudeness. I have also noticed that he seems to remove rather than add content, though most of this is by reverting other people's edits. He does not strike me as a person who is here to build the encyclopaedia, rather as someone who demolishes work and actively discourages editors.

I mentioned a police threat in the heading above. Please to see [1] this retaliation to an IP editor who had attacked him for reverting IPL edits. No matter what the IP editor said, they should not be threatened with a police investigation (in fact, it is more than a threat because Blue Square Thing says he has informed the police). I do not believe editors can be allowed to make threats or statements like that because the IP editor could claim provocation and the thing could rebound on Wikipedia. Potential implications could be serious (I hope I am not being alarmist but the law can be unpredictable). The police threat is bad but, in the same summary, Blue Square Thing says he likes 'to piss of sad little biys from west bengal' (sic). I for one take grave exception to that remark as I am from Kolkata (I have lived in England for the last eleven years). He will undoubtedly claim it is a joke, but it is a vile and insensitive assertion about Bengalis.

Another recent example is an exchange on his own talk page involving User:Krish edits675, who is a new member (a 'newbie', as you say). There has apparently been disagreement and, I suspect, reverting each other's edits in cricket biographies, again about the IPL. User:Krish was obviously concerned about edits being reverted and wrote to Blue Square Thing about it, though he was perhaps less polite than he could have been. Even so, there is no justification for [2] this insulting response, calling User:Krish a 'dick' and so on. It is, as I have found, a typical reaction by Blue Square Thing.

It occurred to me that this behaviour might be recent only, perhaps because of current problems, so I decided to look at his past contributions. I thought going back three years would be reasonable so I managed to view his edits in December 2018 where I quickly saw, for example, [3] this insulting response to an IP who made a mistake, and [4] this sarcastic one. This means his behaviour is not new and anyone scanning his contribution pages can easily see many of these uncivil edit summaries.

I do not wish to burden you with a long list of examples but, as I was editing the Pat Cummins article yesterday, I studied its history and found several posts by Blue Square Thing which demonstrate his insulting comments and dubious actions on that article (I hope I am presenting the 'diffs' correctly): [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13].

In these, he is at turns sarcastic or extremely rude. He tries to belittle other editors and discourage them. He removes valid, useful information for no apparent reason other than his own dislike. In the second one, he flagrantly insults the Kolkata Knight Riders franchise. In the last few, he claims to be writing better English and proceeds to make four very clumsy errors including '2105 season', a broken link and 'Kolokota'. He asserts that a valid shorthand term like IPL 2015 (used by the site for redirection) is something that 'no one outside India has the foggiest about'. I believe this is another insult directed at Indian people. He refers to User:Jaspreetsingh6 as 'some idiot'.

I will end this now as there is a lot for you to consider. I hope you are able to help and I thank you in advance. Best wishes. 79.73.24.191 (talk) 16:54, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello Dilip. WP:CIVIL and WP:AGF are policy which BST should be remembering and abiding by, the diff you linked to the IP address being poor to say the least. Does it breach WP:LEGAL? I have to say I'm not sure, especially considering the edit it was made in response to; if it went to WP:ANI I have no idea what the outcome would be. Yes, there are other examples of intemperance but on the opposite side is the discussion between you and BST at Talk:Shreyas Iyer which is perfectly polite and respectful. Perhaps you should talk directly to BST, tell them how his remarks about Kolkata upset you and ask him to be more considerate in the future. Nthep (talk) 18:45, 17 February 2022 (UTC)
Good morning, User:Nthep. I apologise to be a long time in replying to you. I had not previously seen the WP:LEGAL page and, like yourself, I could not say how it may be interpreted in a case like this after the abuse by the IP editor. You are correct that the discussion about Talk:Shreyas Iyer was cordial. I think your advice that I should make the point to Blue Square Thing personally is wise and I will do that. I will let you know what happens. Thank you for your help which is very useful and much appreciated. 79.73.24.191 (talk) 10:25, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
Good afternoon, User:Nthep. This is Dilip again. I have a new address because power was lost in the Storm Franklin. I am seeing that User:Michri michri is also annoyed about the attitude of BST and has been raising concern at the teahouse page. I have been reading Wikipedia policies and found WP:ENGAGE. BST has ignored our posts and so has failed to discuss the issues. As he is required to do by this policy supplement. Someone mentioned this at the teahouse page too.
I mentioned before that I went back to earlier posts so it can be seen that the BST attitude is not new. I have done that again, to December 2018, and I found these: [14], [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20], [21]. They are only a sample because there are many more and I can see similar edit summaries wherever I look in his contribution lists. They are variously hostile, sarcastic, condescending and they are not as required by the WP:CIVIL page.
I do not like the last one because I found that the person being addressed is a young Indian editor. The tone is condescending as if BST is some kind of 'superior'. This reminded me of a line I saw on WP:CIVIL page which is 'Nobody likes to be bossed about by an editor who appears to believe that they are "superior"; nobody likes a bully'. Please to note that it is not only his comments that are a problem because he is always removing content too, even content that has sources cited, and useful things like further reading sections. I have seen many times here that editors must help to build the encyclopedia but he is doing opposite. I can see that in some of these examples and in recent ones. I have also noticed he objects to use of crore and substitutes other currencies like Australian dollars [22] even when they are not mentioned in a source like 'Hindu' newspaper. Surely that is what you call original research and is not Wikipedia:Verifiability?
I am sorry to be bothering you with this again but I tried to open dialogue with BST and nothing happens. I am better now and will return to work Monday so I will not have much in way of spare time again. I hope you are well. Thanking you for kind assistance. 92.31.3.96 (talk) 13:04, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
There is no mechanism to force another editor to respond to you but other can draw their own opinion of silence if things go any further. WP:ENGAGE isn't policy but additional information and suggested behaviour. Whether you wish to escalate this further is down to you. Nthep (talk) 19:46, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
Hi, let me interfere into the matter. There is mechanism to force one editor if he or she does conversation with the aforesaid language and remove stuff as aforementioned and remain silent even if he is warned and told amiably to discuss in his talk page, if not by me, then by Dr. Dilip. You just tell with your common sense whether what BST has done is morally right and whether any punishment should be implemented to him for it. --Michri michri (talk) 10:31, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
@Michri michri Decisions like that are not unilateral but subject to discussion. Nthep (talk) 15:51, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
But my dear, BST is not responding and trying to remain silent in order to get rid of the issue.
● BST has been editing very much infrequently since the beginning of the raising of the issue.
●He has not gone through our discussion- here, in Teahouse, in my talk page wherever it may be including, yea including his talk page.
●BST has completely vacated his user page.
●In his talk page, he yesterday told to some users that he would have a break from Wikipedia soon.
Are these mere co-incidence? What do your common sense and presence of mind tell?
Also, Dr. Dilip, please open my talk page and put your plan there if you have not seen my reply.
Thank you. Michri michri (talk) 09:03, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
By discussion, I mean wider community discussion. If you feel you are not getting anywhere then you will have to raise it somewhere, Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/incidents, where it will become the subject of wider discussion. Nthep (talk) 13:59, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello. I wanna request un-hiding/un-deleting prior revisions of File:Ericrecords.jpg, recently labeled as "PD-textlogo, at WP:REFUND. As I fear, my request would be overlooked and un-responded. Since you hid the revisions, I turn to you instead. --George Ho (talk) 05:44, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Thanjavur student suicide case

Hi, you had helped in the revdel of this page the page creator had also created a copy on his userspace here. I am not sure if the sandbox also comes under WP:COPYVIO rules or if I (being another user) am allowed to tag that user page. As far as I can see it is the exact copy of the Thanjavur student suicide case article version in the mainspace that was deleted due to close paraphrasing. Please do the needful if necessary.
