t-ban

[edit]

This appeares to be a violation of your topic ban. Can you explain? Valereee (talk) 18:42, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, there, I have no intention to violate any topic ban. From what I understood the ban is only on Jewish theological topics. I am avoiding theological subjects, but for what I understood I am permitted to write about the history of Israel and the history the Middle East from a historical perspective. Is that not the case or do I need to steer clear of any article where the word Jew shows up? I did not write anything about Judaism but about Ottoman Syria. The article is purely historical and my small edit was about Ottoman Syria as a historical entity. If that's an issue, let me know, and I can avoid that as well, but I didn't think it would be an issue. Nycarchitecture212 (talk) 18:53, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
According to this it's "Judaism, broadly construed.". That would include Jewish population by country and even if it were not broadly construed, your edits there certainly seem like they're within the spirit of the topic ban. Valereee (talk) 19:46, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't realize that, feel free to delete what I wrote. Nycarchitecture212 (talk) 20:22, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I'm going to ask you about this, which you deleted less than 24 hours ago. It said
As you're very new here, you're going to want to understand what is meant by broadly construed. It means you can't edit anything that touches on Judaism at all. This is unfortunately a very broad topic, and it includes discussing the topic on talk pages or anywhere else. I strongly encourage you to go edit architecture topics; stay away from synagogues etc.
If you're in any doubt at all whether editing a topic might violate your topic ban, come back in here first and ask for advice from an admin; to do that you can simply open a new section and place {{Admin help}} in that section. An admin will be along shortly. That kind of discussion, here on your talk page with an admin you're seeking advice from, is the only exception to the topic ban.
Can we talk about why you didn't ask for advice, even though you'd reminded yourself of this less than 24 hours ago? Valereee (talk) 22:52, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I must have missed the part you bolded, thanks for letting me know. An article about demographics and history seemed to be outside the scope of the ban on writing on Jewish theology, but now I know and can avoid that too. My edits only revolve around history of the Middle East and architecture now, where I can still add value. Hope all is well! All the best. Nycarchitecture212 (talk) 02:37, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just to be clear, violating a topic ban is absolutely a blockable offense. The fact I haven't blocked you doesn't mean someone else might not still come in here and do it, and if you violate it again it's almost a certainty you'll be blocked. Topic bans are difficult to navigate, and you're on really thin ice. If I were you, I'd be avoiding the history of the middle east altogether at this point. You almost can't avoid editing around Judaism if you're editing in that area. Valereee (talk) 11:40, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize I did not mean to violate my ban. I will revert all of my recent edits out of an abundance of caution and will seek clarification from an admin on if its permissible for me to contribute to articles pertaining to the history of the Middle East. Nycarchitecture212 (talk) 18:19, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @ScottishFinnishRadish I’m still getting used to Wikipedia conventions and apologize for not understanding the rules at times. After taking some time away from Wikipedia to learn its rules I realize that there’s room for improvement and I could have responded to feedback from you more productively. I would like your input on whether or not it’s permissible during these 6 months for me to edit articles about middle eastern history. The activity around my topic ban was explicitly about Jewish theological matters, and would like to see if there is a clear line of demarcation we may establish, as I am concerned that “Judaism, broadly construed” may be excessively broad in a manner that may make editing on distant reasonably unconnected topics problematic. Nycarchitecture212 (talk) 19:23, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am WP:INVOLVED so I cannot provide clarification. I will say topic bans are generally broader than the exact limits of where the current disruption was happening. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 20:29, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, It's normal for the topic ban to be wider than the particular issues involved. @Nycarchitecture212 I was considering blocking you but didn't act after Valereee came here, even though she said you might still be blocked. As you seem so unsure about what is and what is not encompassed by your topic ban, maybe you should avoid Middle Eastern topics all together. Doug Weller talk 09:40, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
NYCa, “Judaism, broadly construed” may be excessively broad in a manner that may make editing on distant reasonably unconnected topics problematic is exactly why topic bans are so difficult to navigate. I'm afraid that until you successfully appeal, which you can't do until October, you're best just not editing anywhere near anything to do with Judaism. As I said before, Middle Eastern history almost inherently includes Judaism. Valereee (talk) 20:31, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
