Australian Literature WikiProject

Hi there, I thought you would like to know that we are trying to get an Australian Literature Project going. I came across your site when I was looking up info for the Robbery Under Arms article. I like it. If your interested, we currently have a WP Australian literature development page.

It would also be helpful if you could list your support of our proposal at the WikiProject Council. There's a lot of work to be done, I think, and the project will really help manage it.

Hopefully we'll see you around, otherwise thanks for your time. xx baby_ifritah 11:27, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Welcome aboard - hope the project looks like a worthy idea! (Oz lit) cheers SatuSuro 06:12, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

Yeah sorry, I restored it, was trying it out to see how it looked (being so long) but on second thoughts it's better with it. I was going to undo it but got called away. --Canley (talk) 10:40, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Thea Astley

Well, let that be a lesson to me - next time go to the primary source rather than authoritative-"looking" secondary sources. The literature is confused out there - I assume the original edition has no hyphen either? Can't see copy on internet but NLA catalogue - which MUST be right eh? - has first edition without hyphen. (I must admit it got me to pondering Astley, last night - she's a great wordsith and I wondered what her thoughts were re hyphen or no hyphen. No hyphen certainly creates a more clever, ironic possibly, title.) Will change it back. Much apologiesSterry2607 (talk) 00:10, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

I suspect only a small band of us notice (notices?) such things as hyphens and who care about the implications! It's a bit like Peter Carey's "True history of the Kelly Gang" not "The true history...". I sometimes wonder whether it matters but I think, really, that it does. Otherwise, what makes literature? CheersSterry2607 (talk) 07:42, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Kibble

Here I am again. I came across the Dobbie and Kibble while doing something else - and noticed some red links for Kibble due to variations in names. I've done some work linking them all to the page you've set up, and as I've said on that page's talk page, I have added a little background info. I'm happy to help unpick your page into two pages when you've checked into the naming issue. Just let me know. OK?Sterry2607 (talk) 01:30, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Ta, will check back later in the week and see what you've found - no pressure though if it takes longer!Sterry2607 (talk) 10:27, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
'S OK...I've been away for a few days - just back. Have plenty to do to keep me occupied!Sterry2607 (talk) 06:13, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I noticed...That's great. I have been looking for the Foxlee in the last week or two as I want to read it. Were they just announced this week?Sterry2607 (talk) 12:08, 8 May 2008 (UTC)
Ah, thanks. I was away from the news recently as I had taken my parents away for a few days on a sentimental journey!Sterry2607 (talk) 04:25, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

The Secret River

Ah, thanks. I reverted back to your last edit - I thought the Twist stuff was suss when I saw it last night but when I saw the new stuff today I decided it was a vandal at work! Good to know there's a few of us keeping an eye on things, eh? Sterry2607 (talk) 04:35, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

I have my copy - I actually think the spear just goes into Twist's hat and ear, and not through his head...until someone can argue otherwise from cited sources proving a "mistake" or, even, some "confusion" amongst reviewers, I think that's how we should read it? Are you happy with that? Sterry2607 (talk) 04:42, 9 May 2008 (UTC)

Miles Franklin Award Winner template

I think that's a great idea. Should it be discussed at the Australian Literature project page? Do you need help? Sterry2607 (talk) 04:49, 23 June 2008 (UTC)

Okey doke. Understand completely ... I am so glad I retired last year and no longer have to worry about such things. You are right about my watchlist - a lot of them are there - so I'll be following with interest! Cheers Sterry2607 (talk) 07:12, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Aha, my watchlist is filling dramatically! Looks good. Cheers, Sterry2607 (talk) 07:36, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, colour theory is not my thing but I do like to think about presentation. My theory is "less is more" but the Coetzee with the two greys is a bit too "less" and looks rather dull doesn't it? I think the grey for Booker and the lovely blue you've chosen for MF works really well on the Peter Carey article...so I'd leave it at what you've done. It looks good. I suppose what i brought up above was more a warning to know what to expect in worse case scenarios - its not really a big issue unless some misguided enthusiastic fly by ed thinks there is an opportunity to have fun - I would consider your edits good faith and notable and so on - its the insurance issue i am thinking of - cripes if you werent editng there wouldnt be much happening at oz lit - although the canberra gals sure do their bit SatuSuro 02:27, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Yeah there is an invisible intangible place between of getting an art up and being beyond being prey to the speedy delete hawks on recent changes - the list is well beyond that now - well worth initiating hot cat in your prefs if you havent used it - well worth checking out and so much easier than in the old days - cheers SatuSuro 02:33, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of The Sitters

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article The Sitters, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. WikiProject Australia newsletter,December 2008

WikiProject Australia newsletter Issue 2, Volume 1December 16, 2008

Welcome! WikiProject Australia is a WikiProject, which aims to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Australia and Australia-related topics. This newsletter exists simply to notify Australian Wikipedians of ongoing events within the project and relating to Australia on Wikipedia.

Last year, an informal pact/commitment was made late in the year to aim for 100 good articles by the end of the year. As a result, a net increase of 24 GAs was achieved in December 2007 and the GA count hit triple figures, ending the year on 106 GAs. This year seasonally adjusted, the GA production has been slower than in last during the May-November periods (see graphs below). At the start of the month, our WikiProject had 178 good articles. Another GA Drive has been organised, with the hope of reaching the double century by the end of the year or Australia Day 2009 at the least. As of 16 December, there are 180 GAs and 15 currently nominated, primarily in response to the GA appeal. Everyone's help is requested to make the drive a success.

Following the 2008 Summer Olympics, some Australian Wikipedians attended the various welcome home parades for the athletes, with one objective being to help create free images of the athletes. Previously, less than ten had photos. However, there are now over 100 athletes that do have photos, but unfortunately in some cases, they have not yet been identified. Help is requested for this purpose at the link above.

Wikimedia Australia

After much hard work in slogging through paperwork and government regulations, Wikimedia Australia was incorporated on 6 August, and membership was opened on 12 November. Its stated purpose is to be "an independent, not-for-profit organisation, whose primary aim is to promote equality of opportunity to access and participate in the collaborative creation of Free Cultural Works, especially educational works, and works about Australia, its culture, natural environment, and Australian news and media". It will be developing a joint publication with Creative Commons Australia, and members are in the process of spreading the Wikipedia message, with Wikipedia being introduced into the curriculum in some courses in Australia next year. The first AGM is planned for 11 January 2009.

Well known Australian Wikipedian and polyglot FA writer Casliber, known for his writings on Australian wildlife among other things, has placed first in this year's arbitration election and appears certain to be appointed.

Quality watch

Mattinbgn is rather camera shy, so here is Harry Trott.

2008 saw a major feat for WikiProject Australia: 100 articles were promoted to featured article status. This is huge not only for the project's individual members and those who helped achieved such an impressive statistic, but for all of Wikipedia. Everyone involved has given readers from all around the world a chance to learn about Australia and relevant topics online from the best of sources. Congratulations to Mattinbgn, who wrote the 100th FA, Harry Trott. Also of note was the promotion of national icon Sir Donald Bradman, which then appeared as the main page FA on his 100th birthday. WikiProject Australia's maiden featured topics arrived early in the year, with Dream Days at the Hotel Existence and Powderfinger albums, both about the band Powderfinger. New South Wales and Music of Australia became featured portals. A further 13 featured lists have been produced.

Good articles

End of November 2008 statistics

Here are some statistics for WikiProject Australia in terms of 2008's good article and featured article promotions. Summing it up: 116 featured articles, and 178 good articles. So far this year, a net 36 FAs and 72 GAs have been added. The areas of FA growth were cricket (+12), military history (+7), swimming (+5), Powderfinger (+4), birds (+4), Silverchair (+2), Holden (+1), Wiggles (+1). These areas have been traditional strengths of the project, and this year, Abraham, B.S. has started another strong tradition, with a series of articles on Australian Victoria Cross awardees (1FA, 8GA). It would be great to see a wider range of Australian topics represented at FA in future. Two FAs were sent to Featured article review, but Bilby was instrumental in renovating and saving both Shrine of Remembrance and Waterfall Gully, South Australia.

1999 Worldcon Attendance

If the number you are citing for the 1999 Worldcon is correct, you should make sure the WSFS Long List Committee is notified of the correction since the figures that were cited on the chart before your correction match up with the Long List. Shsilver (talk) 01:16, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick response. I figured you would make sure the numbers got to them, just didn't want to overlook the obvious.Shsilver (talk) 01:34, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Les Murray

On the Les Murray page,I've added details to the reference for the source of the quote - he was speaking on stage at the Royal Festival Hall during Poetry International 2000. I hope the quote survives but I know in the world of wikipedia there's a high deletion rate. Incidentally, it says further down in the article he has three children, but in the same interview with Clive James he says his fourth child was diagnosed with autism and that was a reason they stayed longer in the city than they wanted.Sayerslle (talk) 03:21, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

If you want 'a link to an external reference'..well, I'm not totally sure what that means to be honest, I only started editing a few articles on wikipedia a month ago. All I can add to the reference is that the interview was screened on a digital tv channel in Britain called Sky Arts. If you mean where could you check a transcript I don't know , maybe there isn't one, but details of the programme are presumably available from Sky Arts. One thing I like about wikipedia is the way it can catch odd fragments, odd quotes that reveal character etc..I didn't make it up you know, I think the internal evidence of the quote, it's style, it's humour , proves it's provenance. If you don't like it being there then delete it, but it is an accurate quote.Sayerslle (talk) 01:26, 1 February 2009 (UTC) I've just searched the Sky Arts website and though unfortunately there is no transcript of the interview there , it does have an alphabetical list of their programmes and under 'c' there is 'Clive James meets Les Murray' and gives a list of the poems Murray read on the occcasion. That is the programme I saw and is the source of the quote. The web address for that is www.skyarts.co.uk Sayerslle (talk) 12:22, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Matthew Hayden

He scored the 2nd most runs and hundreds in the history of the game as an opener. Him and Gavaskar are so far ahead of the rest of the pack. Only a fool wouldn't say that his right up there with the best openers of all-time. --58.167.48.157 (talk) 05:40, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Long time

No speak - have sensed that some poets are self editing and not adding much of the WP RS these days apart from their published lists - any thoughts? SatuSuro 00:59, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

No big deal really - the (if I remember rightly) AustralianBookReview red link user had created an article about himself - and with that the query arose - havent checked through that many others - but am planning to do some more short bios in the near future and was curious SatuSuro 04:15, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Me? I no nuthhink - ok?- so not much harm really :) - I am thinking of doing more about Kenneth seaforth Mackenzie, and starting a few like Veronica Brady, Rod Moran, and others SatuSuro 04:35, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of White Dog (novel)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article White Dog (novel), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Unnotable book. Fails WP:BK of an unnotable series.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. -- Collectonian (talk · contribs) 00:54, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Warning: You're being robbed

This is to inform you that I intend to rob you blind for information on Australian poetry books in the various "[year] in Australian literature" pages. I'm sticking information from there into the corresponding "[year] in poetry" pages and adding a "see also" link at the top of the Australian sections of those pages back to each robbed page. Feel free to retaliate by stealing information from the year-in-poetry pages, which identify Australian poetry books either in their own separate sections or in the "Other in English" section. These Australian poetry sections go back to somewhere in the 1950s or so (much of it from the Encyclopedia Britannica Book of the Year, apparently). There seems to be surprisingly little overlap in the few pages that I've raided so far. Also, the births and deaths sections, going back into the 19th century, have Australians, which I took from the List of Australian poets article. Authorised changes to Kate Grenville

I have been asked by Kate to assist with changes to her page. (I see her at the community orchestra in which we both play, hence my photograph of her with the cello.) I will be doing some "authorised changes" after she has worked out what she wants expressed in the page. - Peter Ellis - Talk 07:52, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Changes now done (yesterday) and her photo listed for deletion (see notes on the Talk page) and happy to have offline emails about the interview.- Peter Ellis - Talk 03:36, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

AFL nicknames, critations

Hi,

I'm new to wiki, I don't know much about critations. You recently removed some of my addins such as Jonathan Brown, and a few others.

I was wondering if you could maybe replace them again, with all due respect, I don't really know where to get critations but all AFL fans do know about these nicknames.

Sorry about the trouble, if there's anything you want me to know please get back to me.

--122.109.92.201 (talk) 12:52, 20 September 2009 (UTC)

{The following is copied from the talk page for "122.109.92.201". Given you may not read it there I decided to copy it here.}

The concept behind Wikipedia is that it should be "encyclopedic". That is, we should only only add "facts" if they can be verified by independent sources. These sources are normally other internet web pages from newspapers, books, websites etc. If an AFL nickname is used in a newspaper article then it's available for citation, otherwise it's just a rumour or hearsay. The idea with this list is to include nicknames in common usage. The way I work is to run a Google search for the player and the nickname. When I find it I add it to the list along with its reference.

May I suggest that you register a user name for your edits. I use my real name but it's up to you what moniker you use. Without one your edits will be looked on as drive-by, and therefore as having less authority: other editors won't trust them in other words. We all start out as novices. And we all make mistakes in the beginning - I've been doing this for years and still make errors. Doesn't matter, if your intention is good it will be fixed by you or someone else, and you learn from it and do a better job next time.

Also, I didn't revert your edits on 19th September. That was done by "Blue520". The page was just reverted to my last edits as that was the last "clean" page that editor could find. Some editors just revert edits and don't try to fix them up. This may be because they want to show the reverted editor that they need to do better, or because they don't have time, or...pick a reason.

I prefer to fix edits where I can on pages I follow. I've just edited the page to add "the Little Master" as a nickname for Gary Ablett, Jr. Have a look at what I've done and see if you can duplicate it for the other nicknames you previously added that have been reverted. But register first. Good luck. --Perry Middlemiss (talk) 22:13, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
