MV Kota Pinang
Hi @Qwerfjkl: How goes it? There seems to be something up with your bot. I've noticed in the last few days it seems to be missed the correct or standard wikiproject banners. For example on the MV Kota Pinang its fired up the WikiProject Transport banner, instead it should be Ships, Military History and Germany . One the Scottish lochs it put up Talk:Loch a' Mhadail. I think here propers were Lakes and Scotland. There was 2nd one but I've forgotten what it is. Its the same on the bays article. Its seems to be the wrong banner, although there may be a change of focus. scope creepTalk 05:53, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Scope creep, yes, the bot uses mw:ORES to determine which WikiProjects to tag, so it is limited to certain WikiProjects - it will not always tag correctly. — Qwerfjkltalk 10:05, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Apparently ORES only predicts parent projects but fails to predict more relevant child projects. For example, here Special:Diff/1162881490/1164466928, this railway line was tagged as "Asia" & "Transport", but it should've been "India" & "Trains" instead, because the line is not of any pan-Asia significance nor a major theme in Transportation. It would be nice if that could be resolved somewhat. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 10:41, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom, there's no real way to fix this. ORES gives topics listed at mw:ORES/Articletopics; I then have mapped these to WikiProjects. — Qwerfjkltalk 10:45, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Tbf I think ORES is having too many false positives: this section, the two sections below and three above. Is it possible to hold this task, continue the shell-tagging, but not adding to WikiProjects? —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 18:29, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom, yes. I'll do so now. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:52, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom, actually, instead of turning off the WikiProject tagging, I've changed the probability from 90% to 99%. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:01, 21 July 2023 (UTC)
- Even with 99% there are 3 complaints below. Tbf I think AI/ML models like ORES, much like ChatGPT et. al., still have to go a long way before they can be really useful. The AI is almost fully confident in its findings but still manages to miss actual topics by a margin. It does know something is a sport, but doesn't understand handball; it recognises something is in Asia but doesn't detect India; detects transport but not trains; and so on. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 14:26, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom, I'm not sure what you're referring to by 3 complaints below, but I'll stop it anyway. — Qwerfjkltalk 14:57, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- I was referring to #Banners, #Incorrect WikiProject added by bot and #Better suitable WikiProject, all of which came up after the raise to 99% probabilty. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 15:02, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom, those aren't related to probability. It's unavoidable that the WikiProjects will be inspecific. (Except for #Incorrect WikiProject added by bot, but I was actually using 90% for that edit.) — Qwerfjkltalk 16:52, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- I understand, that's what I touched on in my last sentence. That ORES brings up inspecific topics, which is not of much value. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 17:36, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Better suitable WikiProject
Hello
I saw your bot adds WikiProjects to talk pages. At handball articles the bots add the Wikipedia:WikiProject Sports template but more accurate would be Wikipedia:WikiProject Handball. Could you please add the Handball banner instead of the Sports banner add at sites which are part off Category:Handball.
Is it possible to check if all pages under Category:Handball have the handball banner and if not (Even if they have another banner) add the handball banner?
Thank you for your work. 🤾♂️ Malo95 (talk) 13:10, 27 July 2023 (UTC)
- @Malo95, I'm afraid not. I have stopped the bot automatically applying WikiProject banners. — Qwerfjkltalk 07:35, 30 July 2023 (UTC)

Growth team newsletter #27
Welcome to the twenty-seventh newsletter from the Growth team! Help with translations
Annual plan for Growth
We shared our annual plan, for the period July 2023 - June 2024.
Our first project of the year will be Community configuration 2.0, which helps editors with extended rights transparently and easily configure important on-wiki functionality.
After we finish work on Community configuration 2.0, we will hope to fit in one of the following projects:
- Article creation: This project aims to provide new editors with better guidance and guardrails in the article creation process, with the intention of lightening the load of new page reviewers.
- Non-editing participation: This project aims to create low-risk ways for readers to participate in Wikipedia with the intention of funneling more readers into contributing to the Wikimedia movement.
Please let us know what you think about these projects on the related talk page, or Growth's annual plan talk page.
Suggested edits
We released a new Section-level “add an image” structured task to Growth pilot wikis (Arabic, Bengali, Czech, and Spanish). This task was part of the Structured Data Across Wikipedia project. We are monitoring the edits made, and we look for community feedback as well.
Suggested Edits are now receiving topic predictions via the new Language-Agnostic Topic Classification. This change affects non-English Wikipedia wikis. It will ensure newcomers receive a greater diversity of task recommendations. Before, as this feature was a test, English Wikipedia was used to select topics. The change is gradual as lists of topics are refreshed when they become empty. The Research team will evaluate the impact in a few months. [8]
Starting on August 1, a new set of Wikipedias will get "Add a link": Georgian Wikipedia, Kara-Kalpak Wikipedia, Kabyle Wikipedia, Kabardian Wikipedia, Kabiyè Wikipedia, Kikuyu Wikipedia, Kazakh Wikipedia, Khmer Wikipedia, Kannada Wikipedia, Kashmiri Wikipedia, Colognian Wikipedia, Kurdish Wikipedia, Cornish Wikipedia, Cornish Wikipedia.
Mentorship
The Growth team provides dedicated features to establish a mentorship program for newcomers. Every newcomer gets a volunteer mentor who provides encouragement and answers questions. Communities can set up or join this mentorship system by visiting Special:ManageMentors. This mentorship system is configurable by the community at Special:EditGrowthConfig.
More communities have implemented mentorship. A Wikimedia Foundation data scientist will be looking at the impact of Mentorship. We will look at the impact on Spanish and English Wikipedia. [9]
The Growth team will also host a Mentoring new editors on Wikipedia session at Wikimania 2023 in Singapore. Workshop attendees will help brainstorm improvements to Growth’s mentorship features.
Positive reinforcement
We will share more complete experiment analysis for all the three parts of the Positive reinforcement project soon. At the moment, the new Impact module, Leveling up, and Personalized praise are still being A/B tested on the Growth team's pilot wikis.
In the meantime, initial leading indicators for the Personalized praise project have been published. Although this is still a relatively small sample, results seem healthy. They show that Mentors are indeed receiving notifications and clicking through to view their praise-worthy mentees.
Growth contributes to IP Editing migration
The Growth team is currently focusing on IP Editing: Privacy Enhancement and Abuse Mitigation. It is a project that touches many different Wikimedia Foundation teams. The Growth team will focus on temporary accounts through two main points:
- the user experience of a logged-out user, that switches to a temporary account,
- change Growth-owned extensions and features, so that they work as expected with temporary accounts. [10]
Community Configuration 2.0
We are still in the early planning stage of the Community Configuration 2.0 project:
- We are gathering internal Wikimedia Foundation teams' needs, so as community feedback. [11]
- We have started to investigate design improvements. [12]
- We are also reviewing similar tools that are part of other products. [13]

Question about a 7 May 2006 closure
I know, you weren't even on English Wikipedia back then. But I was wondering if you know a way to find out how this happened: 23:40, 7 May 2006 InShaneee talk contribs deleted page Category:Forza Italia politicians (...). I would like to know if this was an out-of-process deletion (perhaps due to being emptied out of process and thus deleted per WP:C1), or if there had been a regular discussion at WP:CFD between 22 April 2006 and 7 May 2006 that I somehow missed. It is the final piece of evidence I need to reconstruct the case study User:Nederlandse Leeuw/Emptying categories out of process#Forza Italia politicians. If you don't know a way to find out, it's okay. I'm just asking you because you know a lot about these procedures (although they were sometimes quite different back in 2006). Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 11:36, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Nederlandse Leeuw, that was speedied. It says on the deletion log
content was: '{{db|Duplicated by Category:Members of Forza Italia.}}Forza ItaliaFor...'
i.e. it was tagged for deletion with {{db}}.I'm not sure CfD was around at that time.— Qwerfjkltalk 11:40, 5 August 2023 (UTC)- Ah of course, I must have recognised that speedy-delete template, thanks. Well, then I think it is quite likely that it was emptied and deleted out of process.
- I also just found out that the context of this edit-war about how to categorise Silvio Berlusconi was the April 2006 Italian general election, which he had lost, but initially refused to concede defeat. The Supreme Court ruled on 19 April 2006 that Romano Prodi had in fact won the election, and in the evening of 22 April (when the out-of-process emptying of Category:Forza Italia politicians began) Berlusconi allegedly indirectly conceded his defeat. Tensions in the country about whether Berlusconi would eventually step down as prime minister were probably running high at the time, which could explain the controversy around whether to call him a "politician" or just a "party member".
- I'll continue diff-sifting further. This case study could prove to be an example of CFD procedures not being followed, and people who were warned about following procedure not being sanctioned for it. I don't mean to still sanction anyone 17 years later, I just want to examine why we may have failed to do so in the past. I don't think a simple lack of enforcement was the problem. It probably was a failure of policy: the rules were not clear and accessible to everyone, and there was no widespread awareness of what the policy even was, and so it was practically undoable to hold anyone to account, and enforce a barely-clear, barely-known policy. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 12:01, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- CFD did exist; CSD also existed at the time, and looked like this. I don't see where category duplication is shown as a criterion. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 12:06, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- Great point, @Redrose64. I just found that at 23:28, 7 May 2006, Category:Forza Italia politicians was once again removed from Silvio Berlusconi, this time by Dahn. This was 12 minutes before Category:Forza Italia politicians was deleted by InShaneee on 23:40, 7 May 2006.
- As Redrose pointed out, at the time there was no criterion for speedy-deleting a category because it "duplicated" another category. The only criterion which might apply is:
Empty categories (no articles or subcategories for at least four days) whose only content has consisted of links to parent categories. This does NOT apply to categories being discussed on WP:CFD. If the category isn't relatively new, it possibly contained articles earlier, and deeper investigation is needed.
- But it had at least 1 article, namely Silvio Berlusconi, 12 minutes before it was deleted, rather than at least four days. And the category wasn't relatively new. In all likelihood it was also created by Dahn, but more than a month earlier, around 22:30, 4 April 2006, because Dahn began putting articles in this category in the minutes after (example 1, example 2, example 3).
- But I now see that Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#General criteria no. #7 applied:
Author requests deletion. Any page for which deletion is requested by the original author, provided the page's only substantial content was added by its author and was mistakenly created.
Dahn was probably the creator (on 4 April 2006), has also been identified as the only contributor (and the only contributor was 'Special:Contributions/Dahn) by the deleter InShaneee, and requested the deletion due to "mistakenly creating" it as a "duplicate" of Category:Members of Forza Italia. - Sooooo... it was all fine and according to procedure after all. Sorry for making everyone worried. I now know what happened. It would have been better if both categories had been nominated for merging at CFD on 22 April 2006, but that never happened. Instead we ended up with lots of loose ends. Now we know. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 12:44, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- Judging by Special:Undelete/Category:Forza Italia politicians, there were only two edits to that category page: one to create it, and one to place the
{{db|Duplicated by [[:Category:Members of Forza Italia]].}}
tag; and both were made by Dahn (talk · contribs). At the time, WP:CSD#G7, saidAny page for which deletion is requested by the original author, provided the page's only substantial content was added by its author and was mistakenly created.
This therefore was a valid G7 deletion, even though it was not logged as such. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 15:21, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- Judging by Special:Undelete/Category:Forza Italia politicians, there were only two edits to that category page: one to create it, and one to place the

How can I create a biography of a football player? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chaila14 (talk • contribs) 18:09, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Chaila14, first of all make sure that the player is notable per Wikipedia's notability guidelines. The player should meet either the general notability guideline, or the specific one for sports players described at WP:NFOOTBALL. If the player is not notable their Wikipedia page will likely be deleted. Once you are sure the player is notable, you can create the article, as described at Wikipedia:Your first article. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:25, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – August 2023
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2023).
Interface administrator changes
- The tag filter on Special:NewPages and revision history pages can now be inverted. This allows hiding edits made by automated tools. (T334338)
- Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool that allows easier blocking of plain domains (and their subdomains). This is more easily searchable and is faster for the software to use than the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. It does not support regex (for complex cases), URL path-matching, or the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. (T337431)
- The arbitration cases named Scottywong and AlisonW closed 10 July and 16 July respectively.
- The SmallCat dispute arbitration case is in the workshop phase.

Comment/question: Thank you for the notification, but I already fixed the cite web errors that this bot noticed. Will this bot be triggered every time I happen to make this mistake and correct it myself? ❤HistoryTheorist❤ 21:40, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
- @HistoryTheorist, this is an error. I'm not quite sure what caused it, but the main problem is that the bot notified you way after you made the edit. Let me know if this happens again. — Qwerfjkltalk 10:10, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your response. Perhaps I'll try to fill in all the parameters first so that the bot doesn't get triggered, but sometimes human error catches up with me. This happened to be the first time the bot was triggered so I thought I would have received this notification more times. Thanks for your work! ❤HistoryTheorist❤ 17:37, 8 August 2023 (UTC)
Bot edits appearing in my watchlist despite "Hide bot edits" selection
I am curious if you know why edits like this one by your bot are appearing in my watchlist, even though I have the "bots" checkbox selected under "Hide:". Other edits by bots, such as talk page archiving edits, are not shown. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:12, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95, in order to trigger a notification, the edits for that task are not marked as bot edits. — Qwerfjkltalk 06:09, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hmm. So all of the user's talk page watchers get a bit of watchlist spam so that notifications can be delivered. What if the bot's edit was marked as a bot edit and included a ping to the receiving editor instead? Would that achieve the desired outcome? – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:20, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95, I'm pretty sure bot edits can't trigger notifications, but I can try that out. — Qwerfjkltalk 06:22, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
- It looks like maybe they can. See T128662. Feel free to use my talk page as a test location; I'll let you know if I get notifications. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:28, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

Bot adding WPBS

How to use one same image in two separate articles.
Greetings. This time I write you because I need to know if there is a possibility to use one same image between two articles of the same thing. Thank you. Fico Puricelli (talk) 15:46, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Fico Puricelli, I'm not quite sure what you mean. There shouldn't be two articles of the same thing, because that would be duplicative. You can use one image on multiple articles though. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:12, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- That is what I'm trying to ask. I want to use one same image, into two separate articles. Fico Puricelli (talk) 16:14, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Fico Puricelli, yes, you can do that. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:37, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

Missing CFD discussion
Hello, Qwerfjkl,
I'm trying to find the CFD discussion for Category:People from the Kingdom of Ireland. On 7/20/23, you relisted the discussion but it's not on the CFD 7/20/23 discussion page. I did a search for the category on the main CFD page and no discussion popped up. Could you have forgotten to repost the discussion when it was relisted? Was this a problem with the relisting script? Can you revive the discussion and place it on today's CFD page so it could get resolved in some way? Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 22:16, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Liz, looking at my contribs around that time, it seems XFDcloser failed to relist it completely. I'll relist it properly now. — Qwerfjkltalk 09:21, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
