Bots Newsletter, January 2022
Bots Newsletter, January 2022 | ||
---|---|---|
Welcome to the ninth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Vicious bot-on-bot edit warring... superseded tasks... policy proposals... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots. After a long hiatus between August 2019 and December 2021, there's quite a bit of ground to cover. Due to the vastness, I decided in December to split the coverage up into a few installments that covered six months each. Some people thought this was a good idea, since covering an entire year in a single issue would make it unmanageably large. Others thought this was stupid, since they were getting talk page messages about crap from almost three years ago. Ultimately, the question of whether each issue covers six months or a year is only relevant for a couple more of them, and then the problem will be behind us forever. Of course, you can also look on the bright side – we are making progress, and this issue will only be about crap from almost two years ago. Today we will pick up where we left off in December, and go through the first half of 2020. Overall January 2020
February 2020
March 2020
April 2020
May 2020
June 2020
Conclusion
These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the February 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out! Signing off... jp×g 23:22, 31 January 2022 (UTC) (You can subscribe or unsubscribe from future newsletters by adding or removing your name from this list.) |

Erroneous deletion nomination
This is with respect to the article on author Faraaz Kazi. I see that it has been nominated for deletion.
I just wanted to draw attention to the fact that there are sufficient news coverages to collaborate and sustain the statements in the article. I also saw that someone had written that the article is written in the form of an advertisement where in reality, most of what has been written has come in the media, most of which are leading media houses in the country. The author in question is a two-time national award winner (both awards cited) and has a movie being made on his first book (again cited).
If we can do anything to prevent this erroneous nomination, please do let us know. Request your help in this. Thank you. Far303 (talk) 05:44, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Far303: You can make any arguments for keeping the article at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Faraaz Kazi (2nd nomination), so long as they are based in policy. Also, please note Conflict of interest. ― Qwerfjkltalk 07:09, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

how make page --NinjaSlice0 (talk) 18:46, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
- Welcome! Creating a new article from scratch is extremely challenging, and new editors are strongly recommended to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to some of our existing six million articles before trying it. When you do decide to have a go at a new article, you are highly encouraged to read WP:Your first article. If you haven't already also check out WP:TUTORIAL; it's a lot of fun! Happy editing! ― Qwerfjkltalk 19:02, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

Bot edits
What is the actual benefit of your bot changing capitalisation of short descriptions? Yes it complies with a MOS thing, but it also seems like a series of pointless, cosmetic edits that don't actually benefit the encyclopedia. Joseph2302 (talk) 00:10, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Page you accidentally created?
I was looking to install a userscript (User:SoledadKabocha/copySectionLink.js) and clicked on the page for the script to see that it was blank. I went in the history and saw that you added some malformed text to the page and then just blanked it. Is there supposed to be something here? Did you do this by accident? I think this page should probably be deleted if it has no reason to exist, and just confuses anyone who would try to use it. ― Levi_OPTalk 19:54, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Re: Legitimate Political Discourse
It's not an alternative name for the committee itself, but rather is rapidly becoming a popular phrase associated with the committee and its work (or lack thereof according to Republicans) because of the recent RNC resolution that falsely said Capitol rioters were engaging in "legitimate political discourse". 2601:18C:8B82:9E0:0:0:0:AFF6 (talk) 22:55, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Alfred Collins
Hello on 12 November 2021 as instructed by yourselves i uploaded into the sandbox the final part of the information.
Then submitted the information
I even checked with someone if I had done this correctly and was told yes.
I waited for three months and no one responded to the information in the sandbox
So today 12 February 2022 I finally decided to give it a go and upload the information manually.
I had previously downloaded and read all the help you have suggested and turned the information into a biography.
I reread the information and removed some wording and made sure it was the best I could do.
I see you have removed several days hard work and I am really disappointed.
I was really carefully to give references for everything mentioned in the information and it has taken me months to do.
Sadly I can do no more.
If anyone our there is willing to help me with MOS? Please let me know
All this information is genuinely correct and sadly seems like it will not be told. ACA64sjs (talk) 21:19, 12 February 2022 (UTC)
- @ACA64sjs: I've given a stab at fixing the issues. Most notably, please reference after the statement e.g.

WP:AFC Helper News
Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Recent changes
- Special:Nuke will now provide the standard deletion reasons (editable at MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown) to use when mass-deleting pages. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [4]
- At Wikipedias, all new accounts now get the Growth features by default when creating an account. Communities are encouraged to update their help resources. Previously, only 80% of new accounts would get the Growth features. A few Wikipedias remain unaffected by this change. [5]
- You can now prevent specific images that are used in a page from appearing in other locations, such as within PagePreviews or Search results. This is done with the markup
class=notpageimage
. For example,[[File:Example.png|class=notpageimage]]
. [6] - There has been a change to the HTML of Special:Contributions, Special:MergeHistory, and History pages, to support the grouping of changes by date in the mobile skin. While unlikely, this may affect gadgets and user scripts. A list of all the HTML changes is on Phabricator.
Events
- Community Wishlist Survey results have been published. The ranking of prioritized proposals is also available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 February. It will be on all wikis from 24 February (calendar).
Future changes
- The software to play videos and audio files on pages will change soon on all wikis. The old player will be removed. Some audio players will become wider after this change. The new player has been a beta feature for over four years. [7][8]
- Toolforge's underlying operating system is being updated. If you maintain any tools there, there are two options for migrating your tools into the new system. There are details, deadlines, and instructions on Wikitech. [9]
- Administrators will soon have the option to delete/undelete the associated "talk" page when they are deleting a given page. An API endpoint with this option will also be available. This was a request from the 2021 Wishlist Survey.

Drafts that have not been edited for six months may be deleted, so if you wish to retain the page, please edit it again or request that it be moved to your userspace.

Short description upper-casing bot thought
As I look through the lower-case SD category, it occurs to me that it might be easier for you, if you want to check the bot's edits for false positives, to send the bot batches of SDs that all start with the same word. There are thousands of SDs that start with "species" (749 articles), "genus" (113), "type" (139), "village" (225), "town", "district", "city", "river", "mountain", "municipality", "election", "artist" (89), and "railway" (211). – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:15, 31 January 2022 (UTC)
- Here's a better search link. I see that you did some of these, and it does make inspecting the edit summaries much easier. FYI, I have fixed short description first-letter-casing in two templates over the past few days, which dropped about 1,400 pages out of the category. I also just limited the categorization to article space, since it doesn't make sense to mess with Drafts and User sandboxes; that will drop a little over 1,000 pages from the category. At the same time, articles continue to trickle in to the category as they are edited by humans and bots or reparsed by the job queue. That process will probably take multiple months. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:23, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95: I recommend using
incategory:"Pages with lower-case short description"
e.g.incategory:"Pages with lower-case short description" insource:/[Ss]hort description\|(wiki[mp]edia|season|list)/
so the searches don't timeout. ― Qwerfjkltalk 18:04, 2 February 2022 (UTC) - @Jonesey95: I would appreciate if you could make a big list (or search query) for shortdescs that I can run without checking. Happy editing! ― Qwerfjkltalk 18:56, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- Here are 2,400 articles to keep the bot occupied. The search query is at the top of the page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:47, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- And here are another 1,700 articles. When you get done with those, ping me and I will browse the category again. Right now, 25% of the results are in these two searches, so I can't see new terms very well. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:12, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'll try to run these within a day. ― Qwerfjkltalk 21:24, 3 February 2022 (UTC)
- Here are 858 more. It's getting more difficult to find words with more than 10 or 20 instances. After this run, I should be able to give you a list sorted by the content of the short description, which should make it easier to inspect the edits. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:01, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- It's no problem inspecting the edits, it just takes a while to go through all of them. ― Qwerfjkltalk 17:05, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

- @Jonesey95: I recommend using
The bot got to short descriptions starting with "a " before I could. The "a " should generally be removed, not capitalized, per SDFORMAT. I just fixed all of the "the " and "this " SDs that I could find. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:47, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
- I know, I removed roughly 3000 of them a while ago. I tend to just let the bot capitalise the short description, and only stop it if it's a false positive i.e. it actively makes the short description worse. So I just let the bot do bbc → Bbc and ai → Ai - anything else is outside the task's scope, and these should probably be fixed separately. ― Qwerfjkltalk 14:58, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
Nice job with the bot! Articles continue to trickle in to the category. I am attempting to force the issue by null-editing about 600 articles, maybe as many as 1,000. If you check back in a hour or so, you should see a new batch of articles for the bot to work on. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:21, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
- The category is up to 600+ articles again as the job queue null-edits pages that somehow are not found by insource searches. It probably needs a bot run about once a week. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:28, 22 February 2022 (UTC)
- No problem. ― Qwerfjkltalk 20:30, 22 February 2022 (UTC)

Question from Megabuffalo (01:24, 24 February 2022)
Hello,
User:Freshacconci has reverted all of my alterations on Screen Printing, I understand and accept that I shouldn't have used our reference page for the list of Suppliers that supply PVC and Phthalate inks - This is a big part of who we are and we have a page dedicated to information on this - realistically it was a good citation source as we are an authority on it. However that's fine.
However the fact he's removed all edits seems reactive.
February 2022
By all means roll back my link to our website - which was a list of Phthalate and PVC Free ink suppliers - which of note we use only Rutland and we do so through a Regional Supplier in New Zealand called uniscreen. However I get the sentiment.
However why would you remove the other citations, none of these are even remotely related to us but were pertinent in terms of the article requests for citation. Having been involved in garment screen printing for 18 years, you are also missing some reasonably important information on this article.
Garment printing inks Section
Four-colour process or the CMYK colour model "This processes utilises halftones" - this is a massive part of CMYK printing, and which I linked back to the appropriate Wiki article.
Water-based dye (ink) - This section doesn't even exist and is an entirely different ink to water-based ink. As opposed to a thicker Plastisol Alternative this (ink) arrives concentrate which is mixed into a printing paste (thickener) to allow Screen Printing, this process is best used on light garments and as the dye is in the fibers themselves is often used for dish cloths, napkins and the like. This is similar to traditional textile printing.
Plastisol - Your description is literally incorrect without this. "except in the case of low cure inks[10]."
Again your automation section is poorly lacking. And on top this these are all pertinent citations, I have purposely avoided linking to specific brands which we may use here.
Automation Section --Megabuffalo (talk) 01:24, 24 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Megabuffalo: This should be taken up with @Freshacconci, either in their talk page, or on the talk page of Screen printing (which I see you have done). Please remember to ping users with the
{{Ping}}
template, to notify them of a discussion. ― Qwerfjkltalk 07:12, 24 February 2022 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Recent changes
- When searching for edits by change tags, e.g. in page history or user contributions, there is now a dropdown list of possible tags. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [10]
- Mentors using the Growth Mentor dashboard will now see newcomers assigned to them who have made at least one edit, up to 200 edits. Previously, all newcomers assigned to the mentor were visible on the dashboard, even ones without any edit or ones who made hundred of edits. Mentors can still change these values using the filters on their dashboard. Also, the last choice of filters will now be saved. [11][12]
- The user group
oversight
was renamedsuppress
. This is for technical reasons. You may need to update any local references to the old name, e.g. gadgets, links to Special:Listusers, or uses of NUMBERINGROUP.
Problems
- The recent change to the HTML of tracking changes pages caused some problems for screenreaders. This is being fixed. [13]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 March. It will be on all wikis from 3 March (calendar).
Future changes
- Working with templates will become easier. Several improvements are planned for March 9 on most wikis and on March 16 on English Wikipedia. The improvements include: Bracket matching, syntax highlighting colors, finding and inserting templates, and related visual editor features.
- If you are a template developer or an interface administrator, and you are intentionally overriding or using the default CSS styles of user feedback boxes (the classes:
successbox, messagebox, errorbox, warningbox
), please note that these classes and associated CSS will soon be removed from MediaWiki core. This is to prevent problems when the same class-names are also used on a wiki. Please let us know by commenting at phab:T300314 if you think you might be affected.

Question from Vivekpatel2131 (09:57, 3 March 2022)
why my name is not in wikipedia --Vivekpatel2131 (talk) 09:57, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Vivekpatel2131: If you are asking why there is not a wikipedia article about you, it may because you do not meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. ― Qwerfjkltalk 16:36, 3 March 2022 (UTC)
