I created this page for the group's new topic. The old sandbox was in a page named "User:Shawna/personal sandbox" and it's still there. Webster Newbold (talk) 04:19, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CRITICAL---There is an article on the Sith already in Wikipedia here. How will your project relate to this one? I believe the Wikipedia monitors will not allow a totally separate article on this same topic.

  • Also, I see mostly language cut-and-pasted into the sandbox from other pages on the Web--this won't work in Wikipedia (nor in any English class). Has anyone done research in books or magazines that might throw light on the phenomenon of the Sith as allegory or a cultural representation of evil? I have found some items in our library databases that I'll forward to you all in email. -Webster Newbold (talk) 21:17, 15 November 2011 (UTC) <br\>[reply]
  • Dr. Newbold suggested that I focus on the Genealogy of the Sith instead of listing Sith. This will include where the term "Sith" originated, what character first portrayed the Sith and where other Sith Lords have generated in other Media besides the George Lucas films. -Richard

Article Status--Sunday Night 11/20

[edit]

Your article is making progress, but there are still several issues that have to be addressed before it's ready for publishing (We're aiming for Tuesday):

1) There are some parts of the structure which aren't consistent (or at least I'm having trouble understanding them) -- The Genealogy section really gives more history rather than "genealogy," which normally means to tell who is related to whom and identify the relationship between individuals over time. It seems that there are two sections on history and it's hard to understand how they are related. Shawna and Rich need to confer on what they want to do with these.

2) The "Out of Universe" section incorporates a lot of listing of Star Wars films themselves--are these really "out" of universe? Maybe that section should begin with the novels and the "Original and Prequel Trilogies" should go somewhere else? And in all the items, could the role of the Sith be highlighted more? That's the article's focus.

3) Referencing -- There is a standard and fairly simple referencing format that can be used that will give good results--you can find it described in the "Missing Manual" here: The_Missing_Manual, Creating_a_simple_footnote

This is a fairly simple in-text form. As an example, I've redone notes 5 and 6 in this form. So, there should NOT be a long URL in the footnote as there is in notes 11-15 and elsewhere. You can also use the "Cite" template linked at the top right of the editing box--this prompts you for all the info you have on the source and formats it properly. Just put the cursor where you want to note to go, after the punctuation, and click "cite."

The references in the "Out of Universe" section do not have the reference tags in the code, so they don't appear as footnotes. I've redone the one now called note 24 according to the simple guidelines above--others also need to be revised. If you run into real trouble with this I can help.

4) No reference notes in "genealogy" section -- there's a lot of text here with no references--this will not look good if it's published this way, and may be deleted. After the status of this part is decided references need to be carefully added.

Sorry for the long message--but I want to help you put this into a successful form. -Webster Newbold (talk) 23:50, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Final Reference Clean-Up

[edit]

Folks, There reference citations really need correcting, expanding, or reformatting before this goes public.

  • 1-2 bad links
  • 4 find original book and give citation for that--don't use Google Books for a mere listing
  • 7 this is a Wikiepdia article--you can't use another Wikipedia article--use the original sources for that article
  • 9 find original book, cite as book
  • 12-13 cite actual books
  • 14 include author info
  • 15 inaccurate title
  • 16-21 Need accurate site names--the Work for these notes should be the name of the Web site, which I think was StarWars
  • 23-29 expand info, esp with page titles and retrieval dates
  • 35, 42, 43, 46 somehow these didn't work--reenter info into template, esp accurate URL for the page cited-be sure to take out old notes

Let me know if I can help. -Webster Newbold (talk) 20:07, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
