- I don't understand why nothing I put on the John P. Sanders Wikipedia page was saved. I am working with him to update his page and everything was approved by him. What can I do to make sure the content is saved? Do I have to cite a source for everything? SophiaPhiladelphia1995 (talk) 12:27, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Please help me with... I updated a Wikipedia page about a government official. Everything was approved by him, since I am working with him. But now all of it has been deleted by Wikipedia because it didn't follow the guidelines. Do I have to cite a source for everything that is a biography? SophiaPhiladelphia1995 (talk) 12:29, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- The short answer to your question is yes, everything in a BLP needs to have a reliable source attached to it. You are welcome to use one source for verification of multiple items (see WP:REFB). If you want more help, change the {{help me-helped}} back into a {{help me}}, stop by the Teahouse, or Wikipedia's live help channel, or the help desk to ask someone for assistance. Conflict of interest and failure to disclose same
[edit]Hello, SophiaPhiladelphia1995. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on the page John P. Sanders, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{request edit}} template);
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam#External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. You are editing without disclosing that you are a paid editor. Please do not edit anything in Wikipedia until you have made full disclosure of your status as a paid editor. This is not optional. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure for instructions. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:13, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Please help me with... I am confused by the directions to the COI editing. Is there an example of a page that notes a conflict of interest you could share? SophiaPhiladelphia1995 (talk) 15:01, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

Please help me with... How can I get help from an editor in updating a specific page? SophiaPhiladelphia1995 (talk) 15:40, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- Hello! I will be glad to assist you on this matter. What page do you need updating? Have a great day! SunDawntalk 15:45, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- John P Sanders. I would like to add more information about his life. Right now the page is very bare. SophiaPhiladelphia1995 (talk) 16:03, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- You still haven't made your declaration of paid editing on your userpage, Sophia. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:06, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- I just put it on the top and the bottom of this page. Did I do it correctly? SophiaPhiladelphia1995 (talk) 16:20, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- I have fixed it for you in your user page. SunDawntalk 16:20, 18 March 2022 (UTC)
- To make it clearer, you should declare your conflict of interest WP:COI on your user page, not on your talk page. I have fixed the COI template on your user page, so you are good to edit right now. Is there any help you need with editing? Also, you don't need to place the COI template on your talk page as the declaration on your page is sufficient. SunDawntalk 16:24, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

OK! Now we're getting somewhere. What reliable sources do you have from which to draw? No press releases, no scanned clippings from high school newsletters, but actual substantive discussion of the subject? --Orange Mike | Talk 16:23, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

- I suggest you start with using sources that are clearly WP:RS such as CNN, NPR, and Newsweek. Other sources are not so reliable. SunDawntalk 04:47, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
- A lot of those are interviews, and one is a letter from him. Sources need to be things written about him, and not prompted by him. Think about the case where someone thought "this person is fascinating; I want to write and publish a well-researched and fact-checked story in the WSJ or NY Times" or wherever. A published story like that could be a good, reliable, independent source to use as a citation. 73.127.147.187 (talk) 06:15, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
