Colorado poetry fellowship

[edit]

Hi! I've noticed that you copy-pasted the article Colorado poetry fellowship from this page. You wrote that "This link is open access public domain and has no copyright restrictions". Do you have any evidence that the page is in public domain? Without evidence that the content is free, it might be regarded as a copyright violation and speedily deleted. Vanjagenije (talk) 19:03, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - the link is to my librarys finding aid description of the Colorado Poetry Fellowship Collection. Like 99.9% of all library web site material it is totally public domain. I actually wrote the description in the link which I copy-pasted for the Wikipedia article. Does that help?

Steve Fisher

Hi Steve, and welcome to Wikipedia.
I arrived here from the discussion about the Jack Foster (journalist) article. It seems that there have been a number of copyright related objections to articles that you have created. We appreciate the contributions, but this is a difficult area and the first instinct of any reviewing editor when a copyright question comes up is to be conservative and treat it like a possible violation. Generally, to be treated unquestionably as public domain, it has to be old, US Federal government material, or have an explicit free-use license on the page itself. For example, the library has this page about the poetry fellowship, where it says "Some material may be copyrighted or restricted. It is the patron's obligation to determine and satisfy copyright or other case restrictions when publishing or otherwise distributing materials found in the collections."
You can find some more information about our copyright policies at this page: Wikipedia:Copyright_violations#Policies.2C_guidelines_and_information_pages. If you haven't looked through the first few items in that list, they might be helpful. Also you could look at the Wikipedia:Plagiarism page and also the associated talk page: Wikipedia talk:Plagiarism. The editors who post there are experts in this area and they could give advice or point you to where to ask if you have any questions. There probably is a way to use this information about the poetry fellowship and other material that editors have been objecting to, we just have to figure out the right way to do it. If you'd like to discuss it further, please comment here or contact me on my talk page. Thanks. – Margin1522 (talk) 20:58, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think the confusion is coming about over the difference between a library pages which DESCRIBES a collection and the COLLECTION ITSELF. Material IN the collection may be under copyright but not the library GUIDE to the collection. We WANT that circulated, publicized, disseminated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.253.229.146 (talk) 21:08, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

IC, that's a point. In that case maybe there could be a way to rewrite the article so that nobody objects. I'm just concerned that a lot of Steve's contributions have been getting flagged for copyright issues, which must be frustrating. Like to help out if we can. – Margin1522 (talk) 21:26, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot begin to tell you how frustrating it has been! One problem is that Wikipedia does not have a phone # so you discuss this with a live human. Wikipedia also does not assign ONE person to a contributer so I have been dealing with like a dozen different people and have to repeat my explanations over and overs and over. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.253.229.146 (talk) 21:51, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Steven, this is a massive worldwide volunteer project. Though our parent Wikimedia Foundation has an office and staffers, they are very rarely involved with encyclopedia content. Wikipedia itself has no paid staffers, and no bosses to assign anyone to do anything. Each volunteer editor decides what he or she wants to work on, and you are just as much a volunteer editor here as anyone else. We build this encyclopedia right here on Wikipedia, transparently, where any editor can see almost anything. Phone calls are very rare here. In my opinion, you ought to spend some time studying our policies and guidelines before writing any more articles. Feel free to ask questions on my talk page any time. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:20, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Really, I know just what you mean. Listen, I'm on a deadline today so I can't get to it for a few hours. But we do have a system like that, and I know another editor who is really knowledgeable about how that works. I'll get in touch with him and get back to you later. – Margin1522 (talk) 22:05, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I already filled out some form declaring I was the holder of copyright on the original entry material because I wrote it and that the web page had no copyright issues. Another editor named Mike Van Hall helped me with that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talk) 22:51, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, I strongly advice you to log in when editing. Editing while logged out reveals your IP address which can make you problems. Can, you, please explain where did you have discussion with "a dozen different people" and where did you "repeat your explanations over and over"? I can't find any such discussion in your contributions. You say that you already explained your reasons to a user named "Mike Van Hall". There is no user with that (exact) name. Can you point us to the exact page where you explained it? Maybe you made those edits while logged out, so they are not saved in your contributions. I know that this might be frustrating, but Wikipedia takes copyrights very seriously, and user Margin1522 and I are trying to help you as much as we can. But, you have to help us. Thanks in advance! Vanjagenije (talk) 23:34, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that Mike VanHall is Mike V, who is an administrator and OTRS volunteer. He posted the OTRS identity verification on the user page. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:06, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I copied and pasted a recent e-mail exchage...
Dear Steve,

When reproducing content that has been published elsewhere, we do require that the permission is released on record, just as we did with the previous articles. The permission can be performed in bulk by providing the names of the articles you are creating as well as the name of the original source material. To help assist you in the community, I have added a banner to your user page that confirms your identity. You may add additional details about you and your position if you wish. When creating a new article, it may be helpful to create the article talk page and leave a note that mentions you will be sending a permission release to the OTRS team shortly. This may help prevent the immediate deletion of the articles.

Yours sincerely,
Mike VanHall — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talk) 23:58, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I see that Mike V explained you how to release your work under a free license. And did you send those permissions to the OTRS team for all those articles you created (copied)? Vanjagenije (talk) 10:39, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I THINK I did, but cannot swear I did -I have sent so many replies I am a bit confused. Is there any way someone could check to see if I sent that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talk) 12:21, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Steve, or should I say Prof. Fisher? I talked to my contact about the mentor program, and we agreed that your situation is beyond our expertise. I think Mike V would be in a better position to provide the help you need. Once the public-domain issues get straightened out, it will probably be possible to get the other articles back again by pointing out that the copyright situation is OK now. I would be happy to help out with that procedure and anything else that needs to be done there (and to get your editing block lifted!). Please feel free to drop me a note when you think you are ready to move forward on that. Thanks. – Margin1522 (talk) 00:46, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Margin1522: This user is not blocked. [1] Vanjagenije (talk) 01:17, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Am I good to go? If so - THANK YOU!

Steve — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talk) 01:33, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, sorry I didn't notice that Mike V has already lifted the block. So let me explain what to do now. I'm assuming that you have sent to Mike a list of the articles where you want to use the public-domain content. If not, please do that, as explained on Wikipedia:Donating_copyrighted_materials#Granting_us_permission_to_copy_material_already_online. Then place the template {{OTRS pending}} on the associated Talk page of each the articles. (The Talk page, not the article page.) Later when the permission is confirmed a member of the OTRS team will come and replace that template with another one to indicate that permission is confirmed. That should be all that's required. – Margin1522 (talk) 19:00, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
ps. I forgot to say, on a new article, the tab for the Talk page will be red. That means that the Talk page hasn't been created yet. Just click the Talk tab, which will create the page, and add the {{OTRS pending}} template. – Margin1522 (talk) 19:04, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This so complicated! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talk) 19:12, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it's not simple. And unfortunately our help pages are not known for their simplicity either. Earlier I said send a list, but perhaps it would be easier to take it file by file. It's essentially three steps. (I'm going by the book here, I've never done this.)
  1. Write the article.
  2. Send the email to Mike. Use the form at Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries.
  3. Put the {{OTRS pending}} template on the Talk page of the article.
The OTRS team will take care of the rest. – Margin1522 (talk) 15:22, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you - you are a BIG help!

Do you have an e-mail address for Mike?

Steve — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talk) 16:18, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, sorry, I got it wrong. To mail Mike, you can to his user page (User:Mike V), and on the left side is a menu item that says "Email this user".
But that's not the right address. The address to mail the form to is permissions-en@wikimedia.org
– Margin1522 (talk) 17:26, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Does Mike see that? Does he need to?

Steve — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talk) 17:31, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know. The person at that address might be Mike. Just to be sure you could also drop him a note at his email to let him know what you've done thus far. – Margin1522 (talk) 18:35, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I asked if you knew his email.........

Oops - ignore my last message. You did tell me..... senior moment.

When I go to Mike's page I do not find a link on the left for "e-mail user."

Steve — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talk) 19:41, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Aha, you're right. I think see the problem. You must be accessing from a mobile device. The mobile view shows only about half of the content on his user page. If you access User:Mike V from a PC, it will be in the column on the left under "Tools". – Margin1522 (talk) 03:46, 26 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on H. helen anderson requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

Slow down!

[edit]

It is possible that some of these people whose bios you are posting are notable. But simply copy&pasting from another source is just slovenly. In most cases you are making absolutely no attempt to create Wikipedia article. So slow down! Create one proper article at a time. Preferably mostly in your own words. With a proper lede that asserts notability right from the start; with wikilinks; with an infobox; with multiple references and with categories. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 17:37, 30 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I second what RHaworth says. Wikipedia is quite selective about subjects for articles: the inclusion criterion is called Wikipedia:Notability, and is not a matter of opinion but has to be demonstrated by showing "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." See also WP:Notability (people) and WP:Golden rule. A single link to a biography on a university website is not enough.
Also, there is more to making an encyclopedia article than simply dumping a block of copied text. For general advice on how to make acceptable articles, read WP:Your first article and WP:Writing better articles. There is also advice at WP:WikiProject Biography#Tips for writing biographies. While other volunteers may be interested in developing these articles, there is no reason why they should have to: if you want to contribute on a large scale like this, the onus is on you to take the time to learn Wikipedia's standards so that your contributions do not need extensive reworking. JohnCD (talk) 12:25, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I understand you comments and agree for the most part. I am happy to expand on my entries and add more material and sources. The problem now is that I am blocked. How to I get unblocked? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talk)

Why did you not sign in? Even though blocked you were allowed to edit this page. I have unblocked you but if I seen even one crude copy&paste, I shall re-apply the block. Unless you come to Wikipedia with a fully prepared article, always start in your sandbox. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 13:18, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thank you thank you thank you! I have not used the sand box and will check that out. Can I ask you one favor? If I post something and you think I should be blocked again would you tell me first instead of just blocking? I am happy to respond to your specific suggestions. — Steve Fisher — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talkcontribs)
  • Steve, you should use your sandbox and/or the draft namespace to create draft articles. After you crate a draft, you may ask other editors to review it, or you may submit it to the WP:Articles for creation process. That way you will not be blocked. Users are never blocked for creating bad drafts. Vanjagenije (talk) 16:47, 31 January 2015 (UTC) And, please, please, log in when editing and sign your posts (see here how to sign: WP:SIGN). This is very important for keeping all your contributions in one place. Vanjagenije (talk) 16:49, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Three of your non-articles needed moved because of wrong capitalisation so I have userfied them. Check your contribs history for details. Do not even think about moving them back until they are proper articles. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 13:13, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • I had noticed the capitalization problem but did not know how to fix. I noticed it fixed itself after the new page had been up a while. — Steve Fisher — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talkcontribs)
It did not fix by itself, it was fixed by other editors. If you create an article with wrong capitalization, you can fix it yourself by using the "move" function. Just click "move" button at the top of the page, and move the page to new title. And, once again, please log in, and please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) at the end. Vanjagenije (talk) 14:21, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks - this has certainly been a learning experience. I am 64 and grew up in the paper era and technology does not come naturally to me, even though I am a college professor/archivist/librarian. One Wikipedia question - why don't they just assign an editor to each contributor? One of the frustrating things is dealing with so many different people. — Steve Fisher — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.9.139.246 (talkcontribs)
Wikipedia is a community of many thousand members, all of whom are volunteers. There is no hierarchy, we are all equal. As I know, we have a program called "Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user" where new user may seek for an experienced user to adopt them, ie. to be their mentor. But, I have not participated in that program, so I don't know much about it. You may try. Vanjagenije (talk) 15:42, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
One of the running issues is your editing while logged out. Before making any edit, including talk page edits, click "log in" at the top of the page, and log in with your "Steven Paul Fisher" account. This is very important. Without logging in, your contributions are not saved to your contribution list, which makes it hard for other editors to help you. And, also, at the end of every talk page post, you should sign it by writing four tildes (like this: ~~~~). When you click "save" those for tildes get automatically converted into your signature. You don't need to type "Steve F." at the end of your post, just type " ~~~~" at the end. Of course, you have to be logged in, otherwise the signature would not work. Vanjagenije (talk) 15:47, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

So what is the difference between an editor and a contributor? As part of the learning experience, the student is invited to answer the following question: Harold Mendelsohn did not get his capital M by himself - please tell us who did it. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 19:50, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok - I logged ion - now can I be unblocked?

Steve Fisher

Signing, and multiple accounts

[edit]

You are not blocked: RHaworth unblocked you yesterday, see his message above timed at 13:18, 31 January 2015 (UTC), which you acknowledged (or at least, some one on IP 24.9.139.246 did).

The reason we all keep asking you to log in before editing is that it makes communication so much easier. If you edit without logging in, as in the message just above, it is not clear who the message comes from or when it was sent. On this page, we can guess that it is from you, but if it is on another talk page, just signing "Steve Fisher" is not enough. When we say "sign", we mean end your messages (on talk pages but not in articles) with a group of four "tilde" characters ~~~~, which the system will convert to a "signature" of your username and the time and date, such as you will see at the end of other people's contributions on this page. That signature includes a link to the sender's talk page, making contact easier.

I see that you have two accounts, this one and Steven P. Fisher (talk · contribs). That is not at all a good idea, particularly as during December you were using both, indeed using both on the same article. Since this account is OTRS verified and has been most active lately, I strongly suggest that you abandon the other and use only this one. Once again, the idea is to make communication possible by knowing where to send messages, but multiple accounts raise suspicions of "sockpuppetry" which can lead to blocks.

After this sentence, I will sign with four tildes: JohnCD (talk) 20:54, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Steve, your "Steven P. Fisher" account is blocked, while your original "Steven Paul Fisher" account is not blocked. Wikipedia does not allow it's users to operate multiple accounts. As about your questions in the above section: There is no difference between a user and a contributor. Every user's contributions (i.e. edits) are stored into his contributions page (for example, my contributions are here: Special:Contributions/Vanjagenije). If you are logged in with an username, your contributions are stored into the contributions page for your username. If you are not logged in, your contributions are stored to the contributions page of your IP address. You've been using two different usernames ("Steven P. Fisher" and "Steven Paul Fisher") and you also made many edits while logged out. The consequence of this is that your contributions are now stored into three separate pages: Special:Contributions/Steven_Paul_Fisher, Special:Contributions/Steven_P._Fisher and Special:Contributions/24.9.139.246. This is very bad for several reasons. As I understand, you are interested in how the article "Harold mendelsohn" became "Harold Mendelsohn". The answer is easy: the article was moved by User:Dai Pritchard (see the page history here). Steve, we are all trying to help you here, but you have to show at least some sign of cooperation. You've been told at least three times here on this talk page to sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) at the end, but you still sign your posts with "Steve Fisher" or similar. You have to understand that anybody can come here, write something and sign with "Steve Fisher". That is not a proof of identity. But, when you log in with your username, and when you sign your posts with four tildes, the software automatically converts the tildes into your electronic signature, which cannot be forged. This is very important. Vanjagenije (talk) 21:51, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
