Re: DYK
[edit]Thanks for your note -- I need to log off now, and I'm away all tomorrow, but I'll try to look at it as soon as I can on Monday. Cheers, Espresso Addict 00:08, 14 October 2007 (UTC)
- Interesting article, which I think meets the DYK requirements. The main problem I can see is that the hook you've suggested isn't referenced; given the way you've phrased the hook, just a reference stating he was the first Tamil professor at each would be fine. The hook could also be shortened to omit the 'twice nominated' part. I've given the article a very light copy edit, but it would also be useful to include his surname more often through the text instead of 'he'; I haven't done this as I'm not sure what the conventions are in this case. Hope this is of assistance, Espresso Addict 18:28, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Sri Lankan Tamils (Parathars/Mukkuvars)

Category:North and Eastern Province(Sri Lanka)
[edit]Hi. You created Category:North and Eastern Province(Sri Lanka) to house eight district subcategories and several articles. I noticed, however, that the eight districts fall within North Eastern Province; given that, I think the category should be renamed to the more specific Category:North Eastern Province, Sri Lanka and most of its contents transferred (some articles, such as Eastern Province, Sri Lanka and Northern Province, Sri Lanka, would need to be removed). I was about to start a WP:CFD nomination, but decided to post here instead when I saw that you had created the category. Since the category contains only 13 items, I can easily make the change (that is, if you don't object). Please let me know what you think. Cheers, Black Falcon (Talk) 03:20, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

CNOTE Help

I am having problem generating notes to link per Template:cref and Template:cnote in the article Arumuka Navalar. Thanks Taprobanus 19:21, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Taprobanus! Could you please explain a bit more exactly what you're having trouble with? I looked through the history, but didn't see your issue. No need to place another helpme, just reply here and I'll see it. Ariel♥Gold 20:20, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
- Okay I see your problem, let me look through that a bit, I personally dislike cnote and cref specifically for this reason, and prefer to use WP:CIT. Ariel♥Gold 20:31, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

- Yeah, there is something in this article that is throwing the code off, and for the life of me I can't find what it is. I'm doing some other WP:MOS tweaks while I'm here, and then going to take another look at it. Or not... lol, I just did about half hour worth of work and got an edit conflict, and you've made significant changes, lol. There's something in that page that is interfering with the code, you might want to go ask at WP:VPT. Ariel♥Gold 20:56, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

DYK
[edit]Modern Hindu School does not make any sense. How do you differentiate the term Modern Hindu school to say a Not-so-modern Hindu school. The article is so big that you can may be find a better DYK. The DYK hook that you have written in the Template talk page has mistakes, please correct it. Anyway, if you are going to retain your new DYK hook as it exists currently, I will be challenging it -- ¿Amar៛Talk to me/My edits 15:13, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- Please change it to something that is easily verifiable. First prose writer? If it is verifiable, so be it. -- ¿Amar៛Talk to me/My edits 15:18, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
Hi Taprobanus. I happened to see this exchange while leaving my last message on this page. Tamil prose writing is over a thousand years old - the oldest prose text is Nakkiranar's commentary on Iraiyanar Akapporul (c. 7th century A.D.), and there's a long tradition of prose texts thereafter, so I'm not sure it's right to call Arumuka Navalar the "father" of Tamil prose writing. What is the exact thought you're trying to convey? -- Arvind 21:26, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- Aravind, all what I am looking for is a DYK, hook and I was going by what Dennis Hudson has written about him quoting others. Probably what is better is father is modern Tamil prose ? I dont know if you have a better hook, let me know. Thanks Taprobanus 21:55, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
- "Father of the modern Tamil prose style", perhaps, if it's not too unwieldy? That is certainly quite true - he influenced Indian Tamil both directly and through Thamodaran Pillai. Another hook - independent of this one - might be to mention his role in translating the Bible to Tamil. That a Hindu revivalist helped translate the Bible is certainly interesting, and it might even give two DYKs to this article. -- Arvind 22:08, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

- Well thank you very much, this is something I feared we will eventually come to and wanted to avoid at any cost because after all this wikipedia conflict has produced a lot of high quality articles that were not there before and made at least the Human Rights violations by the government side articles that much better because a lot of creative attempts were made to make them disappear or not tell the facts. But I think Wikipedia community has come to the conclusion that this has to stop because of the disruption it causes along the way. I will wait for the final salvo, where there is an attempt to malign me by spuriously claiming that I have another sock called User:Wikramadithya and that I may have shared my passwords with another user although the user said that statement was made not by him. But nevertheless this should be given the Wikiprocess to be taken care of. Once that is done with and the disruption still continues then Arb comm will be the solution and everything that has been done so far to disrupt, attack, malign, stalk and harass will be of conclusive evidence to ban some users. Thanks again Taprobanus 14:43, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- If asked he should easily be able to produce the diff of the alleged admission of pwd sharing, if it was true. Rlevse 14:48, 22 October 2007 (UTC)
- The accuser goes on to say later that somebody else hacked into his account and posted all those comments such as that he shared the pwd with me and User:Bakasuprman. I don’t understand the circumstances of those comments. Later on the accuser apologized to me and moved on. As I am not a computer expert, I will leave it up to Wiki admins to figure it all out. It is just more example of disruptions and making work for Volunteers (i.e Admins) where there is none. Further I did not create the Wikramadithya and Checkuser will clear me up. Once it is all done, we can move on to the RFC stage and then Arbcomm. Taprobanus 14:57, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, thanks for your intervention. I am talking about this.
As you must have noticed, user Lahiru_k got banned for impersonating me and the fake id was 'snsudharsan'. My id is Sudharsansn and I have made over 1000 edits till now. Thanks for your intervention, please block the fake user:Sumoeagle179 who made those comments as it is merely a one-time 'revenge' for some of the posts in Orkut. - Apparently, the mistake and all that was intentional. I received a message in Orkut, some kind of a threat which has been reported. "Pattana"
[edit]You said at Talk:Sri Lankan place name etymology/archive#Please cite that Indrapala in a footnote at p. 375 of his 2007 book says that both "pattana" and "malai" were words derived from Dravidian languages. My recollection is also that he mentions both. Bodhi Dhana, however, claims that Indrapala says nothing about "pattana." If you have the book handy, could you please check and add an appropriate quote to the discussion at Talk:Sri Lankan place name etymology#Indrapala (2007). Thanks. -- Arvind (talk) 17:09, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
- I have the book at home, will check one more time and get back to you in 24 hours. Thanks Taprobanus (talk) 17:10, 23 June 2008 (UTC)
- The lead sentence in the note on page 375 says that there are Dravidian language words (mark the plural) in early Pali renditions of local place names. Then he mentions Malai then he mentions Pattana. These are the only two place name endings that is mentioned in the note. If he just said Dravidian language word then it can only mean Malai, because he said words it means both Malai and Pattana. I see a WP:POINT violation in the counter argument. Thanks Taprobanus (talk) 12:17, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I've been addressing copyright concerns at the above article, listed at the copyright problems board on June 3rd. Attempting to trace back where problematic material entered the article, I find this edit of yours from March 7, which seems to have introduced some of the text. It may be that you were restoring text that had been in the article earlier. Your edit summary doesn't indicate so, so I can't be sure, and I did not find anything in a minute of two of investigation. Because of that, just in case, I thought I'd better point out that this material seems to include substantial duplication from this source. I can't find anything at that source noting its release into public domain or allowing its reuse under a license compatible with GFDL. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or text that is not explicitly released from other web sites or printed material. We can use external websites as a source of information, of course, but not as a source of sentences.
Rather than remove the material altogether, I have attempted to revise it to address those copyright concerns. Of course, you're welcome to alter or add to that, but please be careful that your edits do not come too close to the original.
If it should happen that you were restoring an earlier edit, please let me know so that I can point out this problem to the original contributor.
Thanks. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:42, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
- Just noted that it seems that the other material, here and here, was also added by you. As you also added citations for that, here, as well as adding citations for the earlier additions (here), I suspect that you might simply not have realized that citations are insufficient legal protection for duplicating text. When material is duplicated from a source, we must use a quotation format to show it is verbatim. But even if that material had been in quotation marks, it would have exceeded fair use allowance. You can read more about that here, if you'd like. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:54, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

M.I.A. (artist)
[edit]Dear User:Taprobanus, I notice your interest in Sri Lanka related issues. Currently, the M.I.A. (artist) page is being vandalised by what appears to be a disruptive editor User:Kerr avon. Looking at his edit summaries and history,[1] he has been involved in a dispute concerning the article before, and disputes regaring Sri lanka conflict related articles. Would appreciate your input. Thanks DriveDelta (talk) 07:22, 3 August 2008 (UTC)
- M.I.A's references to the LTTE are well known with videos of tigers and references to violence in them. Considering the fact that the LTTE has been proscribed as a terrorist organisation in 31 countries, it becomes notable when a artist supports such a organisation, hence a sperate section is warranted. Consider this, if a music artist expresses support for bin Laden then it becomes notable. So the same applies to M.I.A. We can discuss this on the M.I.A talk page if needed. Thanks.Kerr avon (talk) 07:40, 3 August 2008 (UTC)

Regarding article on Chola Empire
[edit]Dear Taprobanus,
It is sought to repeatedly post in the Chola page that the Chola empire came to an end due to their conflicts with the Hoysalas and Pandiyas.
Anyone who goes through South Indian history that it was the Pandiyans who rose and shone like a beacon during the period 1160-1300 when they held a sway over South India. The Hoysalas never caused any real threat to the Cholas except for their sole conflict with the Cholas in Gangavadi. If you read books by Nilakanta Sastri, he repeatedly mentions that Vikrama Chola, Kulothunga II and Kulothunga III and his predecessor Raja Raja II to be holding on to Vengi and the Eastern part of Gangavadi. Nilakanta Sastri mentions in his book Ancient India (a copy was with me but I left it at my mother's place in Tiruchy) that Kulothunga III also successfully fought with Veera Ballala II (he was father in law of Hoysala Veera Ballala and was thus in a way grandfather of Hoysala Narasimha - though I won't claim that Hoysala Narasimha's biological mother was indeed the daughter of Kulothunga III). Alas, such facts are sought to be ignored by jingoistic monsters like Dinesh Kannambadi who has shamlessly contributed in the page on Veera Ballala II that (first) he was either the father in law or son-in-law of Kulothunga III and then goes on to add blindly that 'his overlordship of the Cholas earned him some territories in Tamilagam', which is completely and absolutely contrary to facts. Kulothunga Chola was a king who writes in his inscriptions that he conquered Kongunadu, Ilam and held the crowned head of the Pandiya (though he was later defeated by Maravarman Sundara Pandiyan in 1215 probably).....
Kannambadi also wrote that the Chalukyas under Vikramaditya eclipsed the Cholas, whereas the fact remains that the Chalukya capital itself was occupied for around 30-40 years by the kalachuris when they held sway over Kannada country between 1135-1175, all of which was within 10-12 years of Vikramaditya VI's death. Who made or called jingoists like Kannambadi historians when all they can do is yap in favour of Kannada land and Kannada kings attributing them with all false achievements? That too all this when senior historians like you are present. In fact there is a clique of people like Sarvagnya, Kannambadi, KNM and a few others who keep in touch with Blinguen whose basic qualification is that he is a zero on South Indian history, and these people complain about someone who has been confronting them intellectually. First they start calling that person names accusing him of regionalism and jingoism and they call his contributions false simply because such contributions may not be favourable to historical figures preferred by them. The next step they take is to get in touch with Blinguen probably on email and complain about people and they did this to me exactly in that manner and Blinguen arbitrarily blocked me twice, the second time without notice.
I need your help. I am working in the Supreme Court of India and I would like to prosecute first of all Blinguen who is unnecessarily intervening in the Chola page without having anything to do with Indian history and not having any knowledge about the Cholas. Can you give me his address? I would like to send him a legal notice.
Also anyone with elementary knowledge of history knows that there was no one by the name and title Chalukya Chola. Indeed Kulothunga I was Rajendra Chalukya before he became the Chola king but both he and his every successor never used the name Chalukya. In none of inscriptions from Kulothunga I to the last Chola king, Rajendra IV, the name Chalukya has ever been used for these kings preferred to call themselves Chola kings. By imposing Chalukya Chola title, jingoist Kannadis want to create an impression that the Cholas were sort of vassals of the Western Chalukyas which is patently false. The Cholas themselves were treated the Eastern Chalukyas to whom they were married, as any kind of subordinates, though the Vengi kingdom was merged to the Chola kingdom for the most part except for six years during Kulothunga I's end-reign when Vikramaditya won it. But Vikrama Chola won it back during his reign and he also occupied the Eastern part of Gangavadi.
But the jingoists will not be controlled, will they?
Kannambadi talks so much about the greatness of the Chalukyas. Can you tell him what Roychowdhuri wrote about one of the last kings of the Chalukyas, Karka-II. Roychowdhuri wrote that Karka-II was so frightened of Kalachuri Bijjala that he is supposed to have died of dysentry out of fear of his opponent. Can you find another (more disgraceful) parallel in history?
Thanks... I hope you are able to control and correct facts in history pages.
