IPA (Kochi)

Hey! I think the IPA is still correct. The guy in the audio file is clearly stressing it on the second syllable.

In fact, I think to claim that words in Malayalam tend to have the stress on the first syllable is false and incredibly sweeping. Certainly this is not true of words that have long vowels in other syllables, e.g. malayaaLam where the stress is on the longest syllable (i.e. the third syllable, not the first). I would even say that a word like oru normally has its stress on the last syllable (again, not the first!).

Would you like me to post this on that talk page (without all the informal commentary)? (Or just keep it here? :-D)

BTW, I hope this helps, and I'm glad to help out. Better than the kind of nonsense I have to deal with over at Romani people, *groan*! --Kuaichik (talk) 23:32, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Romani people article

About the IPA for Kochi: you're welcome!

By the way, I ended my last message with a reference to the Romani people article. Sorry to trouble you about it, but it's going through one of its difficult times again. In fact, this time the situation there is more serious than it ever has been.

Lately, a Romanian user Rezistenta (whose user name was originally Adrianzax) has been making very controversial edits to Romani-related articles. None of the regular editors of these pages seem to agree with these edits. He has also threatened some fellow Wikipedians, and for quite a while, almost everyone who normally would edit the Romani people article stayed away. (Even now, only a few of them have come back, and that too only briefly.)

As far as I know, this is the first time certain Wikipedians' lives have been threatened just because of their race (or cultural background) and opinions of Romani-related issues. It is also the first time I have even tried contacting ArbCom, per Jimbo's advice.

I'm not quite sure what to do about this, but could you maybe take a look at it sometime? And once again, I'm really sorry to bother you with this. I can e-mail you if you need any more information, and in that case, I will try to be as helpful as I can be. --Kuaichik (talk) 01:29, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, you can ask the next question as you answered the last one correctly. GDibyendu (talk) 04:46, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

and welcome back to the quiz.--Dwaipayan (talk) 10:59, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

I added that link to contemporary Hyderabad since the page lacks anything on today's Hyderabad - it is mostly history and geography, and all the cliched stuff. I'd have written some of that stuff myself, but citations would be needed, so I put an external link. I think wiki should be reflective of the city holistically. Cheers, —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.96.96.94 (talk) 20:16, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Definitely! However, there are certain guidelines that Wikipedia editors have put forward regarding external links. Please see them listed here. As you can see, linking to commercial sites, such as the one you linked to, is not allowed. In the absence of this rule, you'd have tons of sites listed under the external link section, and a casual reader would find it difficult to identify any relevant links from among them. --thunderboltz(TALK) 20:29, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

In that case...

...isn't this a commercial link on that page?

http://www.hyderabadplanet.com/

It's in the external links category. If the rules aren't the same for everybody, then it's tough for anybody to be scrupulous in following them.

All this is not to say that I do not greatly appreciate the voluntary work you are doing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.96.96.94 (talk) 20:51, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Census India

I came across the new site of census while updating Gangtok, and found that the provisional table of population that GR India template uses is now outdated. Unfortunately, I could not dig out any such updated table, which would provide us with the population of cities.

Please see this and comment. As the provisional data is replaced by updated data, somehow we should change that, too. But how? This is very fundamental, and needs to be addressed. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:22, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi. :) I'm helping out with some of the backlog at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion and see by your "hangon" at Image:Kochi India.jpg that you have permission from the photographer to release the photo. I'm not as familiar with image copyright issues as I am article, but I see by the speedy deletion template that "Template:Nothanks-sd" is appropriately left for images as articles. That template advises:

  • If you have permission from the author, leave a message explaining the details at [[Talk:{{{pg}}}]] and send an email with the message to "permissions-en (at) wikimedia (dot) org". See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for instructions.

Judging by that, it seems that to secure the image from deletion, you should probably go ahead and send your e-mails as set out at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. According to Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission, once you've sent the e-mail, you should write a note on the Image Description Page confirming that permission has been sent to the OTRS. Once the e-mail is received, an editor with access to OTRS will tag the image with {{PermissionOTRS}} providing evidence of the received e-mail and clearing the status of the item in question.

In any event, I'm moving on to uncontroversial deletions, but I wanted to let you know what I believe procedure to be in your circumstances. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:29, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi,

I removed the speedy deletion tag for now, but since the image is tagged as "All rights reserved" on Flickr you rely should forward a copy of that e-mail permission to the OTRS permissions que. See Commons:OTRS and WP:COPYREQ. Thanks. --Sherool (talk) 21:25, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh should probably read the page before posting messages, see you already got the OTRS thing explained above. Anyway yeah, please do so. --Sherool (talk) 21:28, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Image:Jewish synagouge kochi india.jpg, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Image:Jewish synagouge kochi india.jpg is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Image:Jewish synagouge kochi india.jpg, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Image:Kochi_India.jpg

An image or media file that you uploaded or altered, Image:Kochi_India.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Images and media for deletion. Please see the discussion to see why this is (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Kelly hi! 18:09, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

I appreciate your enthusiasm in keeping copyrighted images off Wikipedia. However, regarding this particular image, you tagged it as a speedy only a few days ago. It was apparent that you did not read whatever was written in the license section, or you would have requested me for an OTRS verification rather than paste the boilerplate speedy message on my talk page. Again, you have put the image up for deletion with "OTRS permission claimed, but no ticket #". Well, its hardly been two days since I sent the email. I'd give at least a weeks time before putting up an image that claims OTRS unless you are particularly sure that OTRS has denied permission (which I doubt is the case).--thunderboltz(TALK) 18:22, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
No worries - images listed at WP:IFD are not processed until at least a week after being listed. You should be fine. Kelly hi! 18:23, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Please assume good faith and be more careful with such cases in the future. Most people consider it very disturbing to be bothered with boilerplate deletion messages.--thunderboltz(TALK) 18:38, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
No assumption of bad faith here - other people find it very disturbing to see one of the five pillars threatened by unverified copyright claims. Kelly hi! 18:40, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Like I said, I appreciate the work you do no less. My point is only reiterated by your above statement, as you gave me hardly a few days to prove my claim. Please let's avoid any further arguments. Have a good day. Thank you!--thunderboltz(TALK) 18:51, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
I understand - thought it has been a little more than a few days, the image was uploaded in December of last year. If you have any other uploaded images with similar claims, please forward the permissions. I'll take a look at your other uploaded images to see if there are related problems. But I agree with the above - best wishes to you also. Kelly hi! 18:53, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
I'm doing that right now. Thank you!--thunderboltz(TALK) 18:54, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
Looks like Image:Marine drive kochi.jpg, Image:Antique shop jew town kochi.jpg, Image:Padmanabhapuram.jpg, Image:Ginger dried kochi.jpg, Image:Playing a veena.jpg, Image:Skyline de Kochi.jpg, Image:Yoga girl.jpg, Image:Gargoyles Revenge.jpg, Image:Tulsi2.jpg, Image:Vismaya infopark kochi.jpg, Image:Ship anchor kochi.jpg, Image:Raset.jpg, Image:Kerala traditional grinder.jpg, Image:Site for resort kerala.jpg & Image:Tejomaya Infopark Kochi.jpg have incompatible licenses or missing permissions. (I haven't tagged any of those yet.) Image:Film poster Kochi.jpg and Image:Akkulam shanku.jpg, & Image:The phoenix.jpg need a fair use rationale. I think all the free images with verified licenses are now on the Commons. Kelly hi! 04:51, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
OK, the other images have been listed here. Kelly hi! 17:20, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
That's fine.--thunderboltz(TALK) 17:22, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I was the one who added the {{non-free 3D art}} template to the image. Since it's a copyrighted sculpture, any photo of it is a derivative work. See above. Kelly hi! 17:06, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but can a sculpture of a sea shell be copyrighted? It's a structure that's too common and occurs naturally in nature. Also, the sculpture is in a government owned public park. If you are sure that it would still be a copyrighted work, I'll delete it off myself right now. Please let me know. Also, I'm busy with my exams currently and may not be able to reply (and correct the other images) until later.--thunderboltz(TALK) 17:18, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Whoops - actually, per this, this should be OK under freedom of panorama in India. I will move the image to the Commons with appropriate disclaimers. Kelly hi! 17:23, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
Thank you for taking the trouble to look that up.--thunderboltz(TALK) 17:25, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
It's no trouble, and thank you for putting up with my copyright questions. I'm very sorry for the mistake I made on this image. For future uploads from Flickr, I'd like to recommend Flickr Upload Bot. (You'll need to have a Commons account.) It automatically fills out the details and verifies the license, so you don't have to worry about deletions if the photographer changes the CC license in the future. With respect - Kelly hi! 17:36, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (Image:The phoenix.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:The phoenix.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 10:19, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I saw your name associated in the editing of the wiki entry for Federal Judge Harold Baer.

How come Judge Baer's wiki entry does not include his controversial decision in 2003 that Iraq was partly responsible for 9/11?

Proposed deletion of Kerala State Electricity Board

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Kerala State Electricity Board, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.
