Thanks for the infobox proposal, but

you probably meant "over 50%", not 5. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 20:46, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

@Firefangledfeathers: Over 50% of articles, but over 5% of pages. About 100,000 uses are on non-article pages Wug·a·po·des 20:49, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
Understood. Maybe your point about the ubiquity of infoboxes would be more persuasively demonstrated by "3.1 million articles (almost 50%)". Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 20:54, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
Yeah, I've gone ahead and changed it. Thanks for the heads up! Wug·a·po·des 20:57, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
  • Thank you. I wonder why Mozart is listed as unclosed. Talk:Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart/Archive 16. (The archiving was strange.) - Did you see the proposal - above yours - that linking to a composers or actors works might be a violation of guidelines. It came from Vivaldi (and before Rossini) and left me practically speechless. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:46, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
    • Hmm, it seems like I got the pre-discussion and the actual RfC confused since they were in different sections and the RfC got archived first somehow. I've updated the table. I had seen the proposal above, and it's part of why I thought it would be a good time to run this one since it had similar guidance while still tackling the bigger problem. Hopefully once it wraps up there will be a better sense of where the community is at so that future discussions on styling and guidance have a more firm foundation. Wug·a·po·des 22:31, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! You may want to include operas and compositions in the list of where infoboxes are common, looking at Rinaldo (opera). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:51, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

today's piece is by Arvo Pärt, listen --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:51, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
Today, my story is a piece dear to my heart. When I sang it first, a friend was in the audience with her husband who knew he was to die soon. She played a tape from the performance for his funeral. - Max Reger was the last composer where an infobox was opposed for an article I stand for (discussion still on the talk), from 2016 when his centenary of death was coming up. Times changed since, but some just don't want to see that. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:28, 19 March 2024 (UTC)
I uploaded vacation pics (from back home), at least the first day, - and remember Aribert Reimann (whom I briefly met per chance during intermission of the opera mentioned). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:30, 20 March 2024 (UTC)
Next day, around Porto da Cruz, 2 cats, on Bach's birthday - DYK that I suggested an infobox for Bach on this day in 2013? That one was not accepted, but a simple compromise one in 2015. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:42, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
I listen to Bach's St John Passion today, - 300 years after it was first performed. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:30, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
  • Thanks for putting this together. The community is getting closer to finding a consensus. There's still a very strong 15 or editor group willing to oppose any charge so it makes this process difficult. Don't get discouraged at some of the pushback. It's predictable. Thanks again. WugBot skipped today's GAN Report

Wugapodes, with the GAN backlog drive about to conclude (nearly 31 hours remaining!), I was surprised to see that WugBot skipped generating today's GAN Report. It's not as urgent as usual, since I'm not using the report for nomination totals now that it runs at 11:08 UTC, but I do use it as a double-check to see whether nominations have been taken for review, so I can remove them from the manually put together old unreviewed nominations list. Any chance you can make sure it runs tomorrow—or, if you're around, can give it a manual run today as well? Many thanks for whatever is feasible. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:10, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi, BlueMoonset. Should be fixed. The problem was that the "Error" section was present when it ran, and since the bot wasn't expecting a section like that it crashed. Made some changes, so it should be fine now, but let me know if things are wonky. I also figured out how to specify a specific time for running the bot, so it should return to the 01:00 UTC timing starting tomorrow. Wug·a·po·des 04:47, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Wugapodes,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Question from Connectinfosoft01 (13:04, 10 April 2024)

What are the key elements of website development services? --Connectinfosoft01 (talk) 13:04, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi Connectinfosoft01, and welcome to Wikipedia! Wikipedia doesn't have an article on website development services yet, but you'll probably find our article on web development helpful. If you want more detailed information on the "key elements" you might want to check out our articles on User experience design, user interface design, responsive design, web performance, search engine optimization, web analytics, and application security. In my experience those are what most web development services offer as their core business models and what most web developers tend to prioritize. If you're interested in contributing to Wikipedia and are interested in the topic, you could try submitting a draft article to help fill the gap! Hopefully that helped you find what you need, and feel free to get in touch with other questions you might have. Wug·a·po·des 19:20, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from Connectinfosoft01 (10:11, 25 April 2024)

Which technologies are used in the app development process? --Connectinfosoft01 (talk) 10:11, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi again Connectinfosoft01! I'm not sure if you mean application development generally or mobile app development more specifically, so feel free to clarify if you're looking for a more specific article. Technologies like version control systems (usually git these days), software testing tools like pytest, linters to check for syntax errors and enforce code styling, and deployment platforms like web servers or app stores typically function together in some kind of CI/CD pipeline to ensure code quality and make deployment to users easier. Integrated development environments such as Android Studio or VS Code, frameworks like Flask or React Native, software development kits for particular platforms like Android or iOS, Application Programming Interfaces for integrating with other software, and database management systems like MongoDB or MySQL are technologies used in the development process to write and support the application. Hope that helps you find the right article, and you're welcome to try editing if you're reading and see something you can fix! Wug·a·po·des 21:35, 25 April 2024 (UTC)

ChessBrowser

hi.

seems that there is some activity in the project, after being dormant for years. hopefully this will be "approved" one day and added to WM projects.

let me know if there's anything i can help, or if you want any feedback from me.

(if i may: multi-game support with a game selector is an important missing feature. should not be very complex to add. we use it extensively on hewiki, in articles covering more than one game, e.g. tournaments with a browser for each round, or articles about championship duels, like Fischer–Spassky (1992 match) ).

peace. קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 17:05, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

Hi קיפודנחש! Yes, I've been familiarizing myself with the code again. One place you can be particularly helpful is with documenting the JavaScript code (see related phab task).
On a higher-level, I'm focused on getting a minimum viable product deployed. I've been working under a feature freeze so for the moment I'm planning to fix a few bugs and do some final UI/UX work to make sure everything's stable for review and deployment. Once it's in use we'll get a lot more data to inform the next steps of development. With that in mind, I'd recommend creating a phabricator ticket for the multi-game feature, but it probably won't be implemented until after the deployment of the MVP. Wug·a·po·des 22:38, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks.
I will see what i can do to help w documenting the js, though it's a bit far from the shape i left it (logic is still there, but it was heavily stylized).
As to phab, I'm a bit turned off by the thing right now. It will pass.
Will get back to you regarding the docs, but even if I'll contribute there, it will have to be via a middleman - i gave up on sending actual PRs a while ago. I wish they would move away from gerrit - never got the hang of it and i find it annoying.
most important thing was to tell you how glad i am you picked up this project again.
Peace. קיפודנחש (aka kipod) (talk) 05:46, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:

The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

Question from Soosan G Soroosh (15:06, 29 April 2024)

Hi Soosan G Soroosh, and welcome to Wikipedia! If you're looking for a service, I'd recommend browsing our category of articles on free web hosting services or using a search engine to find companies that offer web development services. Wikipedia is not a web host, so we can't be of much help if you're looking to make a website. Wug·a·po·des 19:21, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

April music

story · music · places

I like to see Appalachian Spring on the Main page today (not by me, just interested and reviewed, and a bit proud that I brought the woman's pic to lead and Main page), and I also made it my story. - How do you like the compromise in the composer's infobox? - How do you like the statue (see places)? I was undecided so show three versions ;) -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:21, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

The statue is of Hildegard of Bingen, and as it happens, her Physica is on the Main page today, and Marian Anderson as my top story (by NBC, 1939), and below (on my talk) three people with raised arms, - and the place is the cherry blossom in Frauenstein. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:47, 9 April 2024 (UTC)

The "more" with a link to a dedicated list is an idea I hadn't seen before. I like the idea, but it's hard to notice at first glance. At least on my monitor, the text looks a lot like the work titles so it took me a bit to see. Also congrats on the DYK! I like the statue. It seems she's been venerated for a few centuries, do you know when the statue was placed? Unrelatedly, I'm going to see The Magic Flute in June, so I've been reading through that and related articles recently. Wug·a·po·des 19:53, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
Same for me, exactly the same, - I hadn't seen that little "more" first, and there's no hint at the profession of the author, - these titles could be poems or paintings. But as the first attempt to compromise in 11 years from Nikkimaria's, I let it stand. (Compare Vivaldi where she reverted, and it's still like that.) Perhaps you could discuss with her on the talk? - Hildegard has been venerated like a Saint centuries before the official proclamation. The statue by Karlheinz Oswald dates back to 1998. - Mozart! Good for you! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:54, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
plum tree blossom for Kalevi Kiviniemi in the snow - see my talk --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:19, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
relief: the last of six RD articles in one week is now on the Main page - yesterday I went to a great recital with many anti-war songs by Jewish composers whose music was banned by the Nazis. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:05, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
today a sad task - memory of Andrew Davis - turned into entertainment (yt at the bottom of his article, actually both) -- the latest pictures capture extreme weather --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:46, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
I really enjoyed the Tribute to Stephen Foster! Such a lively conductor. Wug·a·po·des 21:44, 25 April 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! - more chances to listen: today you can look at the last three stories or "music" on my talk, for the same topics, Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Samuel Kummer and (pictured) one row of 8 double basses and another of 5 bassists ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:45, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
