Xanty - you page looks like a new-beginner's. Hafspajen (talk) 21:17, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You're back!!! It's been archived… on parchment stored in the basement of the Great Pyramid. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 22:02, 15 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Xanty, your busses the poorest in the world. I am stuck in Scotland somewhere where they said there will be a train 11.00 and when down at station the go ;Oh, that train stopped for two weeks ago.. blast them all. Can you imagine it? But all timetables SHOW this train, it is figuring in the timetables unchanged everywhere. Hafspajen (talk) 12:34, 16 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hafs, it's all gone downhill since they privatised it- the line belongs to one company and the trains belong to several others . Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 17:34, 16 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, that explains it. Rather rude people too, which is surprising, since everywhere else they are quite nice though. Or people in Fort Williams are the worst in Scotland. Hafspajen (talk) 17:27, 17 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, should't it be a disambiguation page for this ugly unpleasant locality? Fort William, Scotland and Fort Williams ... Hafspajen (talk) 17:34, 17 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just visited Edinborough and saw the the Scottish National Gallery and Niagara Falls, from the American Side first picture to the left actually, and read the text beside the painting - it is on display at the Scottish National Gallery.

Great! suppose it makes up for Fort William Chip supper and a dram of Laphroaig? Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 19:37, 17 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, had chip supper with ... Irish coffee... - and saw Loch ness, Inverness, Edinborough and Portree too and climbed in the mountains of Skye. And I am extemely tired. Hafspajen (talk) 19:44, 17 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Vhy do you make fish and chips so big? Hafspajen (talk) 21:21, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You're having a whale of a time then? Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 22:37, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sigh, not the same, (I meant both yours and mine) - where is the funny part? Hafspajen (talk) 22:48, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

INCHBOLD, John William: His poetry is probably more attractive than his painting.

HUNT, William Howes: His work is good enough to make one wish that it were better.

PEPPERCORN, Alfred Douglas: All in all, he is a very dull artist.

PATON, Sir Joseph Noel: His work was immensely popular with the laity, less so among artists.

MORTIMER, Thomas: He is sometimes miscatalogued as ‘F. Mortimer”, due to a large full stop between initial and surname.

MORTIMER John Hamilton: After a wild youth, he married a farmer’s daughter. Sober living seems to have been too much for his constitution, for he died within four years.

MARTIN, Jonathan: (Brother of John Martin (painter)) His most notable act was setting fire to York Minster.

MARKES, Albert Ernest: He drank a great deal, and was colour-blind, and both handicaps are evident in his work, which is dominated by grey-greens and highlights slashed into the paper with a knife.

Poor Mortimer - never marry a farmers daughter. Just see what happened to Rafael - who had kept a baker's daughter as a lover... Hafspajen (talk) 23:08, 22 November 2014 (UTC) MARTIN, Jonathan:must have been an early performance artist... MARKES, Albert Ernest too, obviously. Hafspajen (talk) 23:12, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I read that he was little, kinda ugly and loved to put on fancy clothes -looks like it's true. Hafspajen (talk) 23:29, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
AAAA... they doing the mess around ... now don't touch that !! Hafspajen (talk) 17:53, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, Albert Ernest Markes apparently signed "Albert" and did marine scenes. Those I see on the web suggest he was inadvertently before his time with the limited palette, but the palette knife trick I will file away for future use. Tantalising. Not sure it wouldn't get AfD'd if I wrote him up. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:01, 30 November 2014 (UTC) ... and more. Yngvadottir (talk) 19:03, 30 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

COI review

[edit]

Hi Xanthomelanoussprog. I noticed you've chimed in on a couple posts of mine on user:Drmies' Talk page regarding my sponsored contributions. A quick look at your contribs also shows some collaboration with user:Crisco 1492, whos Talk page I'm a regular on, but it looked like your primary interest was in art pages?

I was wondering if you had an interest in chipping in on stuff like this and this on pages where I have a COI. The first being a draft article intended to get the page ready for a "Good Article" nomination and review, while the second is some obviously poorly-sourced material cited to a crowd-sourced review site.

Noting that your interests (at a glance) looks to be in art, as oppose to the types of business pages I usually work on, I wasn't sure if you'd like to chip in on this stuff or not. CorporateM (Talk) 01:58, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Corp, sorry for late reply- I'll be happy to help out. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 22:11, 26 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome! Just wanted to check-in and see if this was still on your radar. CorporateM (Talk) 22:54, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
oh it is- been a bit busy of late. I'll have another read of it tomorrow and make some comments (constructive I hope!) Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 23:02, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, well I just asked for comments, but didn't say they had to be constructive (*chuckle) CorporateM (Talk) 00:49, 5 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
FYI - user:Prelude after noon picked it up. He/she had mentioned on Jimbo's Talk page in a general discussion about paid editing that my version was obviously better and I invited him/her to consider the Request Edit if he/she had time. Per my usual, it is nominated for GA now. If you ever have an interest in chipping in, the Bright Line process leaves me indefinitely seeking a bottomless volume of collaboration and I am always needy for the time and attention of other editors. I am sorry - but sometimes one get one or two reviewers that they just do the most unknowledgeable changes and then expect that one should do what they want you to do. This time it was bad luck - and it is weird to be forced to accept downright wrong content change - when it is just plainly wrong. And after you made them right again, there comes the other one - that was not necessary... your edits has nothing to do with the subject... oh, really? I know what I am talking about when it comes to art history - it DID everything to do with the subject. And on top of evrything that sneaky -we need a new review because copyvio issues? Is that the painting? Not surprised she wanted her lips more red- they're competing with a red coral necklace and an intense pink hairband- she probably looked anemic. How many peacocks died to make that cloak, eh? Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 18:58, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Christian Goller

[edit]
Othello "xanthomelanous" (black hair, yellow skin). and Desdemona by Alexandre-Marie Colin.

I was just looking at the image you added to Christian Goller of justice with a serpent, and I couldn't find the serpent. Where is the serpent in that picture? CorinneSD (talk) 20:01, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ha! Had me worried there! It's apparently the way he signed his paintings, and is the squiggle under the year. Something here on the subject (haven't read it myself yet). Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 21:09, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting! The reference to the serpent must be simply the symbol that Cranach used as his signature. What Cranach felt the serpent symbolized is not clear. CorinneSD (talk) 21:57, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I just saw the change you made to the caption. I don't see the serpent signature, do you? Do you think it's somehow incorporated into the lines of the figures, or do you think it got cut off when the photo was taken? CorinneSD (talk) 22:01, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just checked the original Christie's page- I didn't realise it at the time, but there was another level of zoom (I pasted together several screen grabs to make the image). This shows clearly a serpentine line underneath the year, with a crown or starburst above it. Guess I'm going to have to paste together a larger image! (groan- it only shows about an eighth at a time). I think the whole painting is shown. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 22:41, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for creating more work for you. By the way, how did you come up with your interesting user name? CorinneSD (talk) 22:47, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A friend years ago devised a psychological test, in which the word "xanthomelanous" was used (black hair, yellow skin). . My father used to do the Times crossword (which I find impossible). One day he was stuck on a clue- the answer was of course "xanthomelanous". The only answer I ever got! And somehow I stuck "sprog" at the end when I needed an alias somewhere- just thought I'd re-use it. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 22:54, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh... Thanks for the explanation! CorinneSD (talk) 22:57, 8 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, thank God. Alexandre-Marie Colin. Hafspajen (talk) 01:25, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Xanth, I hope you don't mind that I did some re-wording in the article. I have a question. In the middle of the second paragraph is the following sentence:
  • His analysis of pigments from the painting showed the presence of processed chalk and the absence of silver traces in the lead paint, both indicating that the painting was not genuine.
Then, in the second-to-last paragraph is the following sentence:
  • He adds that Goller’s palette is limited to a few dull colours and that an analysis of the the chemical composition of the pigments in these paintings, such as white lead, shows that the pigments used are typical of the 16th century.
It seems to me that the second half of this sentence and the entire first sentence contradict each other (regarding pigments and what they say about the genuineness of the painting or paintings). Am I reading this wrong, or is some clarification or change needed? CorinneSD (talk) 20:50, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, just sat through a two-hour film in a crowded cinema thinking "I wish the b… actors would get out of the way of the scenery". Kevin Kline is now banned from my talk page. Anyway, what it should mean is that the pigments used are the same chemicals as would have been used in the 16th century, however the trace impurity of silver that should be in the lead is missing. Silver is commonly found associated with lead in lead ore- modern methods of extraction remove the silver, hence lead white without silver is modern. With regards to the chalk (this is presumably used in the priming of the painting) the chalk is too finely milled to be authentic. Hope that's a bit clearer- thanks very much for going through the article. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 21:42, 10 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the explanation. I think both sentences are fine as they are now, except I think that the second sentence should say:
  • He adds that Goller’s palette is limited to a few dull colours and that an analysis of the the chemical composition of the pigments in these paintings, such as white lead, shows that the pigments he used are not typical of the 16th century.
If the pigments Goller used are not typical of the 16th century, the paintings could not have been painted in the 16th century, right? If I am right, the sentence is missing "not". For clarity, I would add that these pigments are modern:
  • ...and that an analysis of the chemical composition of the pigments in these paintings, such as white lead, shows that the pigments are modern and not typical of the 16th century.

CorinneSD (talk) 03:48, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'll reword it in a bit- was just in the process of doing it when I realised I'd conflated the chemical analysis of the pigments with Hofbauer's statement. The analysis, revealing the traces of silver etc. is of the Justitia fake; Hofbauer made his comment about the pigments in relation to the 60 plus paintings he has suspicions about. However I'm unsure as to whether Hofbauer is extrapolating from the Justitia ananlysis or is referring to subsequent analyses on other paintings. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 08:36, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, done- but I've probably made a pig's ear of it. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 09:46, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) Not at all, silk purse! BTW I thought "[B]ut Koepplin was unsure as to what had been made" wasn't entirely clear. Following the source ([Koepplin] kannte Goller, wusste, dass er dubiose Werke fabriziert, aber nicht genau was) I've changed it to "though not which paintings they were" (also added that K had known G). Can probably be improved! Bishonen | talk 10:40, 11 December 2014 (UTC).[reply]
Many thanks!! It wasn't clear to me (via Google translate) what Hofbauer was referring to; notes that Koepplin had made that H. had acquired, or letters from K. to H. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 12:37, 11 December 2014 (U
I'm sorry, but, in spite of your (Xanthy's) recent edits to that very sentence, I'm still confused. As I outlined above, it is not clear to me how finding that pigments were typical of those used in the 16th century supports the claim that Goller forged paintings. Here is the sentence as it is now:
File:Reclining Nude (4758026756).jpg
  • He adds that the palette is limited to a few dull colours and that an analysis of the chemical composition of the pigments in these paintings, such as white lead, shows that the pigments used in the paintings are typical of those that would have been used in the 16th century.
CorinneSD (talk) 16:09, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure either- I included it as a statement of fact rather than a sign of guilt. Part of the problem may be that I'm trying to keep away from having the article say Goller's responsible for any paintings other than the one he admitted to painting. The Bendor Grosvenor blog has a bit more on the Charles V painting (on the left in the article)- the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece across his chest should be gold, not red, and the badge of the Order is missing. The problem is to "authenticate" that as a Goller; I suspect the chain of agents between auction house and painter is probably very murky. Hi, Xanthomelanoussprog, looking at this, I feel pretty sure I made a a mistake there. Can you confirm, so I can remove it from the page and add it to another article? It is such a fine picture, it should be on an article, somewhere. Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 20:22, 16 December 2014 (UTC) Hi Lotje- if you mean my comment, it was a joke about "tiffin" and "tiff"- sorry if it has mislead you. The original title is "Our First Tiff", but they are having tiffin- so they're having a tiff over tiffin! They look old enough to have had several dozen tiffs, mind you! I've removed the painting from the definition. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 23:02, 16 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great work, as always. You and Hafspajen did almost everything; this week I was mainly editor, layout, and image selection and captions, and thanks for that: Meant I could deal with mourning my dead pet without responsibilities getting to me too badly. (She died a couple months ago, but it was in the middle of that holiday to America, and I hadn't mourned yet...)

Let's see. Quick summary of the more major changes:

  • Added a "citation needed" running gag; we seemed to enjoy jokingly adding false information this week, this should keep there from being any complaints. I didn't use it for the joke about the yet-to-be-created "SF Art" fancast, since I changed "Uranus" to "moons of Uranus", as they're more habitable, and then apparently turned five years old.
  • Tried to focus the cathedral entries a bit, so that they're a bit more relevant to the pictures. They got a little diffuse, so I reigned them in a bit. Not that the material was bad, but better to focus on things in the pictures, so we don't distract from them.
  • Expanded "List of tributaries of Catawissa Creek" and "The Magpie" - I think the first is a very impressive list, when you realize the author also wrote very well-sourced articles on literally every entry in it, and the second could have stood where it was, but had a request for more, and who am I to object to a lovely image?
  • On Michelle Obama: While it's great we have an African-American First Lady, I cut "which we all applaud", as First Lady is a position got through marriage. The explanation of why it's significant is in the next sentence. I think we can make the case that she'd be notable, albeit less noticeable, without Barack, so added a list of a few more of her achievements instead.
  • I found "Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes" a little hard to understand (I hadn't heard of them or anything like them before, so I kept thinking "Wait, what mine?", etc.), so I rewrote the first half as if explaining to myself of 15 minutes before

Rest is just copyediting, I think. Anyway, I'm coming to this a little late this week, so wanted to give you a summary, so you can object to my meddling ways, if needed, and know where to look. Will copy-paste to Hafspajen as well, as it's meant for both of you. Adam Cuerden (talk) 03:05, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know- I've got half an idea, but… That's a Tudor period building, and their architecture can be quite flamboyant, like their costumes. During the period 95% of English religious art and sculpture was destroyed (according to Andrew Graham Dixon, and the link between a sculpture or icon and a metaphysical thing was deliberately broken. So maybe you could put a dragon on your roof without someone thinking that it actually was a manifestation of an evil being (like the change in the views on transubstationation in the Mass- at the start of the period you could be burnt for denying that the bread and wine actually changed into Christ's body, then later you'd be burnt for asserting that it did. • Theses Chistians are way to fast in burning each others. But it sounds like tha Calvinists and Zwingli against Lutherans, that teological controversy. Luther did claimed transsubstantiation. It was Calvin and Zwingli who said no tho that. I belive they had a row on that too. And then Zwingli was shot in the warfield, so I think God was not to happy with his ideas. snow shines white on ceilings.
Only the plot is awake.

Exactly. : the snow is white on the ceilings. Only the (lost) plot is awake. Hafspajen (talk) 21:16, 28 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • You might want to know how it was MEANT to be from the beginning:

The night is cold and hard,

the stars sparkle and gleam.

All are asleep on the lonely farm

deep dark the midnight hour.

The Moon wanders his silent ban,

the snow shines white on pine and fir,

the snow is white on the roofs.

Only Santa Claus is awake.

Standing there so silent at the door,

Red against the white powder,

looking, as so many winters before,

up against the Moon's disc,

looking towards the forest, where spruce and pine

rise around the yard a dark wall,

brooding, though not to deep,

over a strange thought.

Wonder what THIS was to represent, in memoriam Goethe? Meaning Goethe was a piece of shit or what? Hafspajen (talk) 22:44, 29 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The turdlike one looks like it's meant to represent the whorls on a brain. Somewhere in the last few days (and I can't remember where, but I think it was in a programme about Holbein by Waldemar Janusczak) it was mentioned that a portrait of Henry VIII was copied so many times that there were as many copies per head of population as there are police in England and Wales (which would work out at around 4,000 copies for a population of 2 million). Will try and track that down. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 08:25, 30 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • The Embarkation for Cythera (created by Jean-Antoine Watteau, nominated by Alborzagros) The Embarkation for Cythera is a painting by the French painter Jean-Antoine Watteau currently in Louvre, Paris. The painting is a sensual depiction of a "fête galante"; an amorous celebration or party. The work celebrates love, with many cupids flying around the couples and pushing them closer together, as well as the statue of Venus nd Amor. There are three pairs of lovers in the foreground. While the couple on the right by the statue are still engaged in their passionate tryst, another couple rises to follow a third pair down the hill, although the woman of the third pair glances back fondly at the goddess’s sacred grove.

Pup Art: Pets Throughout Art HistoryFor who knows how long, dogs have been referred to as man’s best friend and though this certainly holds true, I would say the same applies to other furry creatures as well, such as cats, rabbits, guinea pigs etc. I began thinking about our four legged as well as winged friends after returning from a trip home when my boisterous and mischevious black cat, Loki (he lives up to his name), greeted me with loud meows accompanied by frenzied purring, it seemed he missed me while I was gone, or maybe he was just hungry…but either way I knew I had missed him, antics and all. For those who have a pet or have ever owned a pet, whatever species or breed they may be, know what it is like to have a constant companion who always greets you, in a way, with a “smile.” About 10,000 years ago dogs became one of the first domesticated animals and by 3500 B.C. cats became a household pet in Egypt. Undoubtedly the longest lasting trend, that won’t be ending anytime soon; pets have not only become ingrained into our cultural history, but have been immortalized by the artist as well. When one first thinks of dog paintings, something similar to the amusingly kitsch painting from the film Goodfellas may come to mind, but contrary to this perception some of the most avant-garde artists such as Picasso have chosen to depict their canine counterparts.

Not sure yet, there's a stamp honouring Dietrich Bonhoeffer next to a photo of a sculptor, an artist and an architect taking a stroll round Paris- the sculptor and the architect being banal handmaidens of the "artist". Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 20:36, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Different varieties of realism, but not the sterile realism associated with Nazis and Soviet and Chinese totalitarian art. There's no attempt by the artists to force the depiction of the human body into some kind of physical ideal, unlike Arno Breker. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 20:40, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh. And I thought it was so obvious... A gallery for Pet . Pets in art... maybe? Dietrich Bonhoeffer got into this because we couldn't find Adolf Dietrich, “A Gentleman,” 1928: portrait of a black pug dog, alert, in a naif style... Aristocratic painter

[edit]
The House of Schmuck

I wrote up Iakovos Rizos after massive amounts of research, in the course of which I discovered Albert de Belleroche, who seems to merit an article, even without his having been the subject of innumerable portraits by John Singer Sargent, with at least one blog post suggesting there was a bromance involved. He was also pals with Lautrec and preferred to ignore the fact he was the son of a marquis. The thing of it is, I learnt of him because he supposedly painted a portrait of "Jacques Rizo" that was well received at the salon, but not only can I not find that online, we don't appear to have a single thing by him on Commons. He died in 1944 so by lifetime plus 70 years, pictures of his paintings and lithographs should be out of copyright now, except for any first published after 1923, and he created relatively little after leaving Paris pre-First World War. So; are you familiar with this chap and do you think I should go ahead and write him up and kype some pictures of his femmes décoiffées and studies of shirtless brooding men, or am I up a gum tree? Yngvadottir (talk) 16:20, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No, not heard of him. Nice paintings- he's mentioned in Taro Miyake's article. There's a bit here about his final couple of years in Southwell. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 17:09, 8 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hippolyte Sebron - Vue De La Campagne De Richmond, Effet De Clair De Lune
"Started in 1793, the painting was completed in 1798. The top of the canvas burned in the fire museum on 7 December 1870. Purchased by the city of Bordeaux from Bernard Boyer-Fonfrède in 1830. Two preparatory drawings are in private collections and three painted sketches a collection of the Comte de Mimerel, one in the collection of Mr. Bruno Calvet in Bordeaux, the third sold in Paris, Galerie Georges Petit, 23 June 1922 (no. 15). The scene reflects the ideas of the Physiocrats: << Treatise on the Cultivation of land >> (1750) by the agronomist Henri-Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) << rural general and particular philosophy or economics of agriculture> > (1764 3 volumes) by the economist Mirabeau (1715-1789). It may represent the family of the sponsor, the conventional Gironde future François Bernard Boyer-Fonfrède (1766 - 1793), his wife Marie-Anne, born Barrere, and their children Geneviève and Jean Francois Bernard, who is the lesson of plowing . • Well, sorry you got blocked on the Swedish Wiki. Was trying to talk to them, and tell them you are my friend who only wanted to follow the IP users's bright idea of a Je Suis Hafspajen - moment or movement on a Swedish Wiki- and hope they unblock you. I guess my temperament is not fitting in there. I am to much of a freedom-lover and much of a non-conformist - to enjoy a much to strict atmosphere. Here nobody cares a bit how we use our talks and fun it is, too - as we many times already stated it... it is an atmosphere of creative chaos that is beneficial to the project, it is fun, humour that is doing no harm, they give a personal touch, and some like EEng, Many of us happen to find H's efforts uplifting, amusing, and inspiring. (And in the best traditions of open content, I've shamelessly stolen it). Crazy EEng... If it makes people amused, is no harm in it and it is a creative fun ... and at least 30 articles were created through this kind of fun, if not more, people picking up an idea, an other coming up with an other one, many of those articles went to DYK, at least five resulted in articles that later had Featured pictures from those article, lately it was the Ploughing in the Nivernais - both a DYK and a FP: so it is surely, in fact, beneficial to Wikipedia. It is not about being temperamental and dramatic - as some judged me - it is simply ... not liking to follow rules that there is little point in it. Why didn't they show some more tolerance here? It doesn't cost them anything. Using pictures on a talk-page didn't hurt anyone. Placing a red link on a talk-page didn't hurt anyone. When we have so much fun here with our freedom of doing what we want on talk-pages .... it would feel like going in a desert with no water - to conform to the no-picture, no-fun - policy. Hafspajen (talk) 00:34, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately some people think fun is the enemy of progress and achievement, when (as these Nobel Laureates well know [5]) the opposite is true. Call me crazy. EEng (talk) 05:11, 30 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

She had some big guns, and a nice runway. If it was not appropriate then it was removed. I have no plans to have a digital meltdown or create a hate page about others to make a point about how upset I am, over one of my comments being perceived as sexist. (I am not upset at all) and am frankly speaking glad that another editor was able to read the tone he/she felt from the comments and clarify it. That is how this site is designed to work. One can only hope that others, that perhaps do not have my yachting background would pick up on innuendo the comment might cause and it was removed. To me, all boats are "she" as it has been in nautical terms for hundreds of years. If you do not care to communicate that is fine, and your welcome to join Skype conversations regarding anything on SP as it is going to be more productive then picking my efforts apart, unless you simply can not help it, then go right ahead and pick away. "I write sexist crap", well IMHO "your funny". It is sad that you see it that way, but under the first amendment everyone in the USA is allowed freedom of speech, and I commend you for that. Keep up the good work. Cheers! talk→ WPPilot  23:27, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
When something is encased in quotes it is a quotation. I am quoting the opinion of another editor who states that what you wrote is "sexist crap". Not my opinion. Other opinions that editors have expressed about your writing seem to be mostly concerned with plagiarism, i.e. you've been lifting chunks out of articles without putting them in quotes. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 23:42, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Using female pronouns for a boat isn't necessarily sexist, though of course it's as antiquated as Sir Walter Scott's prose. However, the vernacular, jocular tone of "she had some big guns" suggests personification, and so one wonders how one is supposed to read "and a nice runway"--as a "landing strip". Say, Xanty, where did all this take place? It's starting to sound quite exciting. Drmies (talk) 03:15, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I will be sure to do that in the future, it was not intentional and, as I have always said my contributions are considered part of the rough draft to ease the workload at Adams request. It would be nice to point these things out, in plain English as you have and it will be addressed in my future editorial contributions. The comment was a joke, I guess I am not keeping on what is Sexist Crap in this day and age. Opps perhaps but not worth getting upset over. Learn as you go. Hope that your day is a perfect one! talk→ WPPilot  00:48, 24 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My intent was to try and stop Hafs being so concerned about their edit being labelled "sexist"- hence I mentioned the characterisation of WPPilot's edit (as above). Just found out that my mental image of a mutinuous sailor kissing a big gun is in fact wrong- he's trying to whistle surreptitiously. Have a good day you both. Here we go again

Pasternak is looking for his parents

You used to do the FA's and you vanished. I am only willing to do FP's and assumed that you would do the FA's but when you vanished and made it clear that your not willing to communicate then I did what I could to cover for your deficiencies. Your making the publishing of this harder for no reason. You are not the editor in charge yet your clearly dedicated to sabotaging my efforts.

You are clearly good at picking apart my contributions, in spite of the fact that the publication readership is overwhelming increased over the last 4 issues, I can see based upon your comments that you are now going to pick up for your pal and rather then fix any problem you see, your going to use it to attack my efforts. Publishing deadline is still in the future, and ONCE AGAIN I HAVE ALWAYS SAID THAT MY CONTRIBUTIONS ARE ROUGH AND OPEN TO CHANGE BY ANY OTHER EDITORS. @Adam Cuerden: @The Herald: @Gamaliel: @The ed17: @Tony1: @Go Phightins!: I will let you do the ENTIRE next issue as I have had enough of this and all the drama is unhealthy. Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2015-05-06/Featured content good luck and have a nice day, I am going flying! Have fun.........talk→ WPPilot  14:40, 28 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A metaphor or a metaphorical device?

[edit]

I think you're knowledgeable in art history, so you might be able to answer the question I posed at Talk:Gian Lorenzo Bernini#A metaphor or a metaphorical device?. CorinneSD (talk) 22:02, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You presume too much! I had a look and I'd rather answer here (because I had to look up what a metaphor was). I think the edit's probably correct- I understand a device to mean a pattern or design in an artwork; since the device could have some meaning (like the drawing of a knot indicating something bound in union) I suppose you could talk of a metaphorical device. But here the context seems to be Bernini's use of "offstage lighting" to highlight objects of devotion- areas of the painting are lightened as if illumination is coming from outside the canvas. Metaphor's probably better- but metaphor for what? The article doesn't say, does it? If all the world's a stage, what is all the light? I hope this is helpful. I've probably made a eejit of meself. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 22:25, 4 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, you didn't make an eejit of yourself. Your comment is thoughtful and interesting. I think it is precisely because the sentence does not refer to a specific meaning that light is supposed to represent that "a metaphorical device" is better than "a metaphor". Also, I think, generally, a metaphor is used more in literature, and a metaphorical device is used more in art and theater. In any case, it has been reverted by User:Johnbod, and I think he's right. Thanks- he's still active on Commons, but hopefully no-one will slip up and let him back here. Haf's proposal that the Signpost shouldn't have bylines is a good idea- I was opposed to it some time back, but now see that it is the way forward. Would have put a brake on WP's relentless self-promotion. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 09:20, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

FC

[edit]

Hey Xanth, as per our earlier discussion, I've recruited Juliancolton to help out with FC. I think we're going to work pretty well together! Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 16:15, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Good! I'll make a start contrib later on. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 16:16, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

List of scheduled monuments in Mendip

[edit]

Thanks for your note re List of scheduled monuments in Mendip. Unless they have added one in the last month or two (which is always possible) then with User:Noswall59 I spent many happy hours trying to resolve the numbers English Heritage (now Historic England) count with duplicates, similar names etc etc (see User talk:Noswall59#Another list of Somerset scheduled monuments at FLC) If you are writing it up as the final one of the set you might want to mention a current featured topic nomination built on all of these (see Wikipedia:Featured topic candidates/Scheduled monuments in Somerset/archive1).— Rod talk 17:51, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've mentioned it, with a dash of Mummerset. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 21:37, 17 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - Wells Cathedral isn't a scheduled monument (although parts of the Bishops Palace are). I am currently searching the Historic England Lists to try to identify the discrepancy.— Rod talk 06:59, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's weird- Wells Cathedral says it is! Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 07:05, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Monument number 196971, according to Pastscape. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 07:20, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Good spot. That Pastscape ref says "Scheduled. (6-9) ", but refs 6-9 are all over 50 years old or to minor newsletters rather than official sources. The current definitive list is The Historic England list. If you choose advanced search & select location as Wells & scheduled as heritage category it shows 3 sites (barn, gate & part of palace), not including the cathedral. If you do the same advanced search for location = Mendip & category = scheduled you get 234 - I'm trying to find which of those 234 are not in our list, or whether they have an entry twice (which happens sometimes).— Rod talk 07:36, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I tried to have a look- I got the 234 records, but can't display more than 25 on the screen at the same time (which makes looking for duplicates difficult) and the option to print doesn't allow more than 50 records. Xanthomelanoussprog (talk) 07:53, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
