Biography

[edit]

Victoria Mas is the daughter of Jeanne Mas.[1][2] After obtaining a degree in Languages and Literature and a Master's in Modern Literature at the Sorbonne, she worked in cinema as a production assistant, script supervisor, and set photographer.[3]

She published her first novel, Le Bal des folles, in 2019,[4] which was awarded the Talents Cultura prize in July 2019.[5] This book became a great literary success and earned her the Grand Prix Stanislas for a first novel,[6] the BPE Patrimoines Prize,[7] as well as the Première Plume Prize. On 14 November 2019 she also received the Renaudot des Lycéens Prize.[8].

Le Bal des folles is set in the Salpêtrière hospital at the end of the 19th century and focuses on Dr. Charcot's research on hysteria and hypnosis among interned women.[9]. According to Jérôme Garcin from L'Obs, "In a clear, pastel-like prose... the young novelist stigmatizes triumphant machismo and gives a moving voice to those who were silenced, smothered, hypnotized." The novel was adapted into a film, The Mad Women's Ball, by director Mélanie Laurent.[10] It has also been translated into twenty-five languages[11] and has sold more than 190,000 copies.[12].

In 2022, she published Miracle, which explores the theme of popular beliefs through the story of a teenager who experiences visions of the Virgin Mary on a small island in Brittany, the island of Batz.[13]
