Automatic or Manual:
Programming language(s): AWB (as the transaction engine)
Source code available: NA
Function overview: Monthly newsletter delivery for WikiProject United States and supported projects
Links to relevant discussions (where appropriate): There are multiple bots that do this task already
Edit period(s): Monthly
Estimated number of pages affected: currently about 1200 but may go up
Exclusion compliant (Y/N): Currently no because it ignores anyone who isn't a mamber of the project or who opts out of the newsletter but I can add that functionality if needed.
Already has a bot flag (Y/N): Y
Function details: WikiProject United States Newsletter delivery This is a relatively simple request. Other than using AWB as the transaction engine there is no coding involved. The bot will simply append the Newsletter to the talk page of the project member using the Prepend/Append function of AWB. I will be using only the core awb with no find and replace, advanced find and replace or custom modules in place so no replacements will be made other than those that would normally be performed by AWB to a user talk page which are very rare.
Once the newsletter has been completed the following steps will be performed but only step 7 is actually done by the bot.
- Pull all members for WikiProject United States or one of the supported projects (currently not including the joint projects but those may be added later) into AWB. The list is located here
- Remove all Duplicates (members of more than one supported project)
- Remove anyone who does not want the newsletter (opt outs) from the list here
- Remove the four users who want the full contents of the newsletter located here
- Add in editors who are not members of one of the supported projects and want the newsletter located here
- Manually send the newsleter to the users that want the full contents located here
- Start the bot and let it send the remaining 1200+ newsletters without me having to manually hit the Save but 1200+ times.
- Note: I have been performing this with my regular account for the last few months so if needed I can provide expample pages that this was done on. --Kumioko (talk) 14:32, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion
[edit]- To clarify, you're basically just asking to run the exact same thing you've been running on your main account (i.e. #7) under your bot account, right? If so, we should be able to approve this very quickly. =) --slakr\ talk / 20:43, 13 January 2012
- Yes thats correct. --Kumioko (talk)
- Okay, this is a little tangential, but is your newsletter receipt list up-to-date? What percentage actually get read? - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 19:57, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I would say its about 95% up to date although I do scrub it periodically for bans, retires and the like. All the people who get it are active editors (I have defined active somewhat loosely as being anyone who edited in about the last 6-9 months). I can't say exactly the number who read it but its somewhere about 30-40% based on the stats here and here. --Kumioko (talk) 21:22, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, does anyone have any objections if I speedy approve this request? I don't really think a trial is necessary --Chris 10:21, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I was thinking much the same thing. - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 17:41, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Speedily Approved. --Chris 17:04, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
