Original – Surb Karapet Monastery was the second most prominent Armenian monastery (after Etchmiadzin Cathedral). Armenian tradition claims the remains of John the Baptist were stored at the site in the fourth century. It was destroyed during the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and its stones have since been used by local Kurds to built their houses.
The precise date of this photo is unknown, but it was certainly taken sometime before 1915.
Reason
High resolution photo of an important destroyed monastery.
