[edit]Rights to Update a Page and Photo
[edit]Dear Editors:
I am having trouble understanding the rules regarding updating a page. I would like to update the photo on this page quin snyder as it is outdated and fuzzy. I updated it with a current photo, but it was rejected. I filled out the photo rights form, but it was still rejected. The people who rejected it suggested that I contact the WP:Volunteer Response Team for help. Also, I am not very tech savvy so I am a bit overwhelmed with all of the terminology being used on Wikipedia in the help section, including the photo section.
I do have a username and password for Wikipedia.
Thank you for any help that you can give me and I am sorry for being a bit dense when it comes to understanding Wiki language and rules. I am trying to train myself, but again, this is all very overwhelming for me.
Thanks again,
Linda Luchetti
- Hello @Lluchetti: The article in question is Quin Snyder the image in question is here File:Utah Jazz Head Coach Quin Snyder.jpg. The problem is that you are trying to upload non-free content without a good reason. The picture is fuzzy is not a good reason to claim use of a copyrighted photo from Getty Images. I agree with the advice on your talk page, that you spend some time investigating and learnnig about wikipedia prior to trying to upload copyright infringements. I will post some advice on your talk page as well. —Gaff ταλκ 00:38, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
Renaming categories
[edit]I need to rename Category:Submarin_Freya to Category:Submarine_Freya - please tell me how to do it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Websafe.dk (talk • contribs) 06:23, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Hello @Websafe.dk: - see Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion#Speedy_renaming_and_merging for the relevant guideline for uncontroversial "speedy" renames. Note: This is only for Wikipedia categories, for categories on Commons see the more helpful responses below - sorry. GermanJoe (talk) 07:47, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Category:Submarin Freya does not exist on the English Wikipedia. The OP may have been thinking of commons:Category:Submarin Freya. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:39, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Is this what you intended...? --CiaPan (talk) 11:00, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- I have created commons:Category:Submarine Freya and added it to commons:Category:Submarines by name, also added the image to commons:Category:Submarine parts. --CiaPan (talk) 11:32, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
WARNING commons:File:Freya hull.jpg is going to be deleted due to lack of licensing info. --CiaPan (talk) 07:53, 1 December 2014 (UTC)

St. Petersburg State Institute of Psychology and Social Work
[edit]1. Yuriy Platonov In response to "Yuriy Platonov wiki" typed into the Google search window, the latter shows a list of search results including the link to another person "Yuriy Mihailovich Platonov (born 16 January 1948) is the mayor of Rybnitsa[1], an industrial town in Transnistria, and the head of the Rybnitsa district ..." but when this link is clicked it redirects to the page that we created. Please help us to distinguish those two persons without deleting any of them
2. Please help us to delete this page (Saint Petersburg State Institute of Psychology and Social Work ) and leave the recently created (St. Petersburg State Institute of Psychology and Social Work) SPbGIPSR (talk) 13:12, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- 1. I see no problem here. When the link is clicked one is taken to the page about the mayor.
- 2. I've converted the one page into a redirect to the other.
- -- Hoary (talk) 13:50, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Both have been done. There are now three different pages related to Yuriy Platonov.
- Yuriy Platonov (Mayor) contains the article and revisions related to the old page.
- Yuriy Platonov (psychologist) contains the page you have written yourself.
- Yuriy Platonov now functions as a redirect page to distinguish between the two pages.
- (edit conflict) Both have been done. There are now three different pages related to Yuriy Platonov.
- In addition, the unwanted redirect from question 2 has been removed. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 13:54, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Or more precisely, you deleted the redirect. Which I had created just four minutes earlier. I don't much care either way, but the OP seemed to be objecting to an article (incidentally, an article of his/her own creation) rather than a redirect. -- Hoary (talk) 14:00, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- minor quibble, statement 3 above should read: "Yuriy Platonov now functions as a disambiguation page to distinguish between the two pages." -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 15:48, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

- Please note that I have moved Yuriy Platonov (Mayor) to Yuriy Platonov (politician) which is a better disambiguating title.--ukexpat (talk) 16:53, 1 December 2014 (UTC)
USE: PDF book maker

- As far as I know only registered users can save books. You should register a username, besides saving books there are other advantages to editing as a registered user. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:21, 29 November 2014 (UTC)
UPLOADING A PICTURE TO WIKIPEDIA..AND NOT COMMONS
[edit]I WANTED TO UPLOAD A COAT OF ARMS TO THE RUNKLE CASTLE ARTICLE, SO I REGISTERED, BUT AM NOT AUTOCONFIRMED YET. THE PICTURE WAS UPLOADED TO COMMONS, HOWEVER, I THOUGHT THAT BY DOING THIS, IT COULD BE RETRIEVED FROM THERE AND UPLOADED TO WIKIPEDIA BY ANOTHER CONFIRMED USER. NOW I CANNOT FIGURE OUT HOW TO REQUEST THAT THIS PICTURE BE POSTED BY SUCH A PERSON. THIS IS A GREAT PICTURE AND THE CREST AND SWORDS ARE RARE TO FIND. I RESTORED THEM AFTER THEY HAD BEEN IN MY GARAGE IN ALASKA. THEY NOW STAND OUT BOLDLY ON THE WALLS OF MY HOUSE. I AM VERY PROUD TO HAVE THEM THERE. PLEASE FIND SOMEONE TO MOVE THAT PICTURE (RUNKLE COAT OF ARMS)TO THE RUNKLE CASTLE ARTICLE SO THOSE THAT ARE OF RUNKLE DESCENT CAN ENJOY THE PICTURE. THANKS — Preceding unsigned comment added by Williamrunkle425 (talk • contribs) 18:41, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Citation help
[edit]Can somebody help me out with the citations? I've created a test page. User:Gaff/Citation sandbox A few of them are working well. The Vaughn reference (footnotes 3 and 4) are not. Please reply here, or better, fix the test page and I will check the diffs. Thank you. —Gaff ταλκ 19:29, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Done Thanks. —Gaff ταλκ 19:43, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Fixed If you use three authors in the cite, then you have to have all three in {{sfn}}. And spelling is important. Install User:Ucucha/HarvErrors to see these types of errors. -- Gadget850 talk 19:44, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Wow. That is a game changer. —Gaff ταλκ 20:42, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

Political party parameter in non-politician bios
[edit]Just a quick question, I undid this because although the subject is on record as supporting a political party, she's not a politician. It was reinstated again, and I've taken it out for a second time, but it got me thinking, so wanted to check I'm doing the right thing. I've always understood that particular parameter is reserved for politicians. This is Paul (talk) 21:54, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- If it isn't reserved for politicians, surely it should be. For someone only notable as a singer, their political leanings are no more relevant than their favourite football team. Bretonbanquet (talk) 21:59, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- If the information is relevant for her bio, I'd keep it in. How notable was her support? If she would be a long-time, active supporter with notable, public appearances for the party (speeches, campaigning, lobbying, ...), it might be relevant enough for inclusion. Otherwise I'd leave it out as irrelevant piece of data (we also don't note her shoe size or eye color). GermanJoe (talk) 22:10, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- I thought that probably would be the case. I see Oprah Winfrey's infobox says she's a Democrat, but I understand the system's slightly different over in the US. As far as I know, Adele has never appeared in support of Labour, that is, attended a conference, campaigned on their behalf, etc. This is Paul (talk) 22:15, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Sean Connery also has the parameter. He has publicly and financially supported the SNP. Same as Oprah Winfrey for Obama. — ₳aron 22:22, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
- Perhaps it might be worth having a wider discussion on this in whatever the appropriate place would be as there seems to be an inconsistency with the use of this. William Roache is well known as a Conservative supporter, for example. I recall him speaking in support of William Hague during the 2001 UK general election, but his infobox doesn't mention any political affiliation. I've mentioned Gwyneth Paltrow elsewhere, who famously endorsed Obama recently. There are others too. This is Paul (talk) 22:32, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
