[edit]Johnnie Juanita Mohamed
[edit]I provided the information for Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Oral History Project Interview. Please advise what's next. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rednose1 (talk • contribs) 00:18, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- The article Johnnie Juanita Mohamed is now in danger of being deleted. At the top of it is a notice explaining what must be done for it to be retained. Maproom (talk) 08:19, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
Wikidata help
[edit]This isn't a Wikipedia question, but does anyone here know how to merge Wikidata entries? The page Maspalomas Dunes, which contains links to only en.wp and simple.wp, needs to be merged with Dunas de Maspalomas, which contains all the other interwiki links; and I'm too tired to wade through Wikidata pages trying to figure out how to accomplish this. Can someone give me simple instructions? Deor (talk) 01:29, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- I suggest you enable the first gadget "Merge" at wikidata:Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets. Then select "Merge with..." on the "More" tab at Maspalomas Dunes. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:41, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Well, that was certainly easy; no telling how long it would have taken me to figure it out myself. Thanks, PH. Deor (talk) 01:47, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Wikidata's merge gadget is brilliant - I have used it many times.--ukexpat (talk) 17:31, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
Uploading a copyrighted image you own
[edit]Hi, I am looking to upload up a photo of an artist I work with. They have suggested a photo. It was a watermark copyright sign on it. Would this be appropriate, or does this go against Wikipedia policy? They are happy for it to be on here, but have asked whether the photo with the watermark can be included? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adamgerace (talk • contribs) 07:11, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- If you work with the artist, can't you just take another photo and upload that? This would eliminate both the watermark problem and the need for them to provide a formal copyright release. Maproom (talk) 08:07, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
Lupton family
[edit]Hi, Please could you put the words "Lupton Hall" in italics. The words are in the twentieth century section at the end of the page. Thanks Mike{{ I do not know how to sign off - sorry, I am hopeless at this and often my students do it instead of me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.182.217.169 (talk) 10:30, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- The way to sign your posts has been explained to you three times on your user talk page. Please remember also that I told you in a section above, only yesterday, that it is easier for people to help you if you include a wikilink to the article in question. The way to format text, including italics, is explained at Help:Wiki markup, however it is not obvious why those words ought to be in italics. Which of the criteria in MOS:ITALICS do those words meet? --David Biddulph (talk) 11:05, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
Hi David Thanks for the response. I read the MOS: ITALICS guide - My guess is that the Lupton Hall is a great design - it is from the Arts and Crafts movement and many works of art etc are usually in italics. What do you think? It would be great if you could read through the page and check that any italic words have been done correctly.
I know you have explained 3 times - but I find it really hard to even get onto my talk page. I know I did use a sign post once so I can actually do it - I just don't remember how to. I am sorry - please be patient with the older guys on Wikipedia!! Thanks again Mike — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.182.217.169 (talk) 11:14, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- In the message to which you were replying I gave you a link to your user talk page. You will also find a "talk" link in the signature which SineBot has put when you didn't sign. As far as the italics are concerned, the MOS gives a pretty comprehensive list which doesn't include buildings. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:23, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- To sign your posts type ~~~~. The ~ is usually the very top left button on your keyboard, and you usually have to push the shift key when hitting it. Alternatively, in the box under the edit box (where you type) thre are a bunch of buttons that are shortcuts for including common wiki markup, and one of them has the ~~~~ and will insert it for you if you click it. Lastly, the box above the edit box has an icon that looks like a pen and a cursive S. If you click that it'll insert the ~~~~ and sign your post. Also, in the top box to the left of the signature button is a B and an I. Clicking the B will allow you to insert bold text and the I will allow you to insert italic text. --~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:07, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- In referring to the top left key, ONUnicorn is probably thinking of a US keyboard. For an English keyboard the tilde is usually created by shift with the hash (#) key at the right of the keyboard. For other keyboards, see Tilde#Keyboards. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:43, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- But ONUnicorn has explained why I occasionally see posts "signed" with ¬¬¬¬, e.g. here. Maproom (talk) 16:40, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Notification about user scripts
[edit]Many years ago I installed a user script to give me preview popups when I hovered over links. Today I got a notification that that script was no longer maintained and I should remove it and activate the popup gadget instead. Unfortunately, I dismissed the notification too fast and missed where I should remove the script from. My common.js page is a red link, and I went back to my monobook.js page to check but it didn't seem to be there (it seems I blanked it in 2011...) Would anyone mind letting me know where I should go to do this? As I installed the script many years ago I unfortunately don't remember where I did it. Thanks! aoxiang翱翔(user)(talk) 15:11, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- @Aoxiang: Blank User:Aoxiang/vector.js and Go to My Preferences / Gadgets. Under "Browsing", check "Navigation popups, article previews and editing functions popup when hovering over links", and click Save. - NQ (talk) 15:14, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Done. Thanks very much for the incredibly fast response! aoxiang翱翔(user)(talk) 15:18, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
Templates with unbalanced brackets and braces
[edit]Is there any policy or guideline regarding unbalanced brackets in templates? A lot of tables, especially in articles on governments and administrations, are created with the open brace transcluded from a template and the close brace written locally. As such, beginning and ends of the table code are not immediately obvious, and it causes a distraction in AWB by raising flags on pages that are actually functioning fine.
Some templates come with their own simple bookend—{{Userboxbottom}}, for example, transcludes nothing more than |}
—but I don't know if this is an officially preferred method or if it's considered gratuitous except for templates heavily used by new Wikipedians. I don't have any desire to make clones of {{Userboxbottom}} over and over again for every start-of-table template, but I'd be interested to know if that would be considered "ideal". Cheers —jameslucas (" " / +) 15:33, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- @JamesLucas: There should generally be template pairs with matching names like {{Userboxtop}} and {{Userboxbottom}}. It makes it much easier to read the source and it becomes possible to change implementation if the top no longer needs a table end to close it but for example a
</div>
. Can you give examples of start templates without a matching end template? I mean cases where the end template doesn't exist, not cases where somebody wrote|}
instead of using the template. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:04, 13 August 2015 (UTC) - See Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 135#Table-end templates for a related discussion. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:12, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
- I guess the truth is that I don't know that these templates have no bookends, but I can say that ends aren't being used, the template names are not suggestive of there being a mate, and the documentation doesn't mention a counterpart. The last example I encountered was {{Ordinal US Congress Senate}}. Thanks for dredging up that discussion, PrimeHunter. I look forward to reading it. —jameslucas (" " / +) 10:04, 13 August 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the example. I think {{Ordinal US Congress Senate}} should be moved to something like {{Ordinal US Congress Senate start}} to indicate that it's not self-contained, and be matched by a new {{Ordinal US Congress Senate end}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:14, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

- I have some disorganized thoughts that will be more appropriate for WP:PUMPTECH when I've pondered a bit more, but for now I have just one question: What are your thoughts on the fact that the template name doesn't make it evident that it's a table? —jameslucas (" " / +) 13:54, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
- The name doesn't have to indicate it's a table but the documentation should say how to use it. In this case it's clear for users who know tables. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:39, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

JFK Assassination page
[edit]Why does Wikipedia continue to post information that lacks substance of fact and clearly leaves out evidence that would lead readers to conclude a different conclusion about what happened? It's the same main stream media approach taken for over fifty years to mislead the American people and to deny them the facts of this cold blooded killing of an American president. I would have expected more from your web site. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.119.76.180 (talk) 16:33, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Wikipedia's policy is to base its articles on what is reported in main stream media, so this should not surprise you. Maproom (talk) 16:37, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Please discuss on the article's talk page, where you will see that this has already been discussed ad nauseam. Thanks.--ukexpat (talk) 16:39, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Atlanta Celebrates Photography
[edit]I am a co-founder of ACP and would like to offer the official board approved history of the organization up until I left the Board of Directors. And I don't know who "Thomas Dodd" is but he was NOT a featured artist in the last several years. [... content redacted as not relevant here...] — Preceding unsigned comment added by SusanTodd-Raque (talk • contribs) 17:16, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- SusanTodd-Raque, I assume you're offering an alternate version of the article? Two things: there can be no such thing as "official approval", and this should be taken up on Talk:Atlanta Celebrates Photography. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 17:19, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Hello, SusanTodd-Raque. Wikipedia articles are required to be based on reliable published sources, and mostly on sources independent of the subject. What the subject (or the subject's board) wishes to say about themselves is of very little interest or relevance to Wikipedia - unless what they say has itself been the subject of comment by independent sources. --ColinFine (talk) 18:08, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Furthermore, the history would have to be published, ideally on the Atlanta Celebrates Photography web-site. before it could even be referred to - as otherwise it is not verifiable.
As for Thomas Dodd (artist) he appears to be a well known Atlanta photographer, whose web-site here includes- This year for "Atlanta Celebrates Photography" (a month-long event occurring every October in Atlanta), I am joined by some of last year's participants in the "Exploring Light and Shadow" show. We have teamed up in a new gallery space with a unifying concept of celebrating beauty in all it's shapes, forms and sizes. Come join me, Max Eremine, Nate Dorn, Craig Gum and Brent Walker for "Uncommon Beauty"'
- It appears, therefore, that he appeared at Atlanta Celebrates Photography in October 2014 - Arjayay (talk) 18:23, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

- SusanTodd-Raque, the name "Thomas Dodd" shows up at least 54 times on the ACP web site. Google for site:acpinfo.org "Thomas Dodd". I am assuming had you noticed the name Thomas Dodd as he had appeared at the top of the list of artist that was on the ACP Wikipedia article. Dodd was added to the list on July 1, 2015 as part of this edit which also added two other artists. Today, another editor removed the entire list of artists from the ACP article. --Marc Kupper|talk 19:42, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
"Cite" is intermittently missing from the editor toolbar
[edit]Fixed Normally when I edit a section using the classic wikitext editor there's a row of icons just above the edit box followed by "Advanced, Special characters, Help" and "Cite". For the past few days I'm getting the icons followed by Advanced, Special characters, and Help but "Cite" is missing. I have not made any recent changes to my Wikipedia profile.
To summarize some testing I performed:
- Cite almost never shows up when using Firefox and signed into Wikipedia.
- Cite shows up some of the time when using Chrome and signed in.
- Cite shows up some, or possibly all, of the time with Internet Explorer and signed in. (I did very little testing with IE)
- Cite seems to show up most, possibly all, of the time in all three browsers when signed out of Wikipedia.
Have there been any Wikipedia side change that be be related to this? I noticed that when it shows up that the word "Cite" appears a fraction of a second after the "Advanced, Special characters, Help" which all appear at once. --Marc Kupper|talk 19:24, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- Mine jumps from somewhere near the middle to the right end, with no rhyme or reason. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:26, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
This has been happening to me quite frequently too. Other scripts/gadgets also fail to load intermittently.- NQ (talk) 19:48, 12 August 2015 (UTC)- Never mind, mine was possibly due to a broken script - fixed it and now all working smoothly.- NQ (talk) 20:42, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

- @Mark Kupper: you for instance load Twinkle and the ref toolbar from your User:Marc_Kupper/vector.js. Ref toolbar is however a default loaded gadget and twinkle is also better off loaded as a gadget. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 20:30, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

- Thank you TheDJ. I removed the call to refToolbar from my vector.js and now I'm getting the "Cite" option is again available in edit mode. I had added the the refToolbar in 2009 as at the time it was not part of the default set available to all editors. I did not know that Twinkle is now available as a gadget and will make that change too. It's a bit of a puzzle as to what changed or broke recently. The other user comments about it jumping around reminded me that Cite has jumped around for me at times. Perhaps late loading JavaScripts are not getting added reliably. --Marc Kupper|talk 20:48, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- They are added reliably, just differently. The changes are intentional. We stopped supporting ancient scripts in MediaWiki, in order to give everybody a 500ms per page speed boost. Most people won't notice a thing, but a few old scripts will need some fixes. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 20:54, 12 August 2015 (UTC)

Disclaimers
[edit]I have been trying to increase the number of citations to remove the disclaimer on the top of the page for the following Wikipedia page: François Clemmons. Can you please advise what else needs to be done to remove said disclaimers. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rcarbone1983 (talk • contribs) 19:53, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- You need better sources like books, articles in newspapers and magazines. Ruslik_Zero 20:13, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Rcarbone1983, I removed the top hat notice about that citations were needed. You have been doing good work on the article. I left the other notice about that he may not be notable in place as the case so far is weak. Most of the sources are from or related to Middlebury College. He appears to have been an instructor or lecturer there. Thus they would not be WP:INDEPENDENT sources that WP:N is looking for. I checked the NY Times (he's from Manhattan) archives but they never feature him. A wider search using Google News only found trivial mentions.[1][2] --Marc Kupper|talk 20:28, 12 August 2015 (UTC)
