[edit]Need assistance with accessing Wikipedia through Mac dictionary app
[edit]I'm trying to help my neighbor resolve a problem with accessing Wikipedia through his Mac using the Dictionary 2.1.3 app. Whenever a Wikipedia link is accessed through the app, the message "No Entries Found' appears. In the search box, the search terms, followed by "?lang=" is displayed. If ?lang= is removed, the link is followed normally. My neighbor mentioned that this began happening after he donated to the Wikimedia foundation more than a year ago, but that could be a coincidence. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Garman Lord (talk • contribs) 01:26, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- Certainly a coincidence, and I'm guessing the problem is not a Wikimedia issue but on the other end. Has your neighbor tried updating his Dictionary app? Everything seems to work fine for me with v. 2.2.1. RivertorchFIREWATER 18:41, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
His dictionary app is up-to date for his system. He doesn't want to update his system beyond 10.6.8, because that would take away his scroll arrows. He is an artist, and a writer, so he NEEDS them for his work.
using {{cite journal}} is there a way to indicate when an article will become openly available?
[edit]Hello again. I'm working on an article with a reference that will become open on 2017-09-15. The only way I've been able to stumble upon to include that info is to write "(openly available on 2017-09-15)" at the end of the title of the paper. Is there a better way? Thanks, JeanOhm (talk) 03:25, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- This one?
{{cite journal | vauthors = Yamaguchi H, Arakawa S, Kanaseki T, Miyatsuka T, Fujitani Y, Watada H, Tsujimoto Y, Shimizu S | title = Golgi membrane-associated degradation pathway in yeast and mammals (openly available on 2017-09-15)| journal = The EMBO Journal | volume = 35 | issue = 18 | pages = 1991–2007 | year = 2016 | pmid = 27511903 | doi = 10.15252/embj.201593191| url = }}
- The first thing I noticed about that cite is the inclusion of extraneous text in
|title=Golgi membrane-associated degradation pathway in yeast and mammals (openly available on 2017-09-15)
. Don't do that.|title=
should hold only the article title. Any editorial comments belong outside of the cs1|2 template.
- You might add
|pmc=5282831
and|embargo=2017-09-15
:- Yamaguchi H, Arakawa S, Kanaseki T, Miyatsuka T, Fujitani Y, Watada H, Tsujimoto Y, Shimizu S (2016). "Golgi membrane-associated degradation pathway in yeast and mammals". The EMBO Journal. 35 (18): 1991–2007. doi:10.15252/embj.201593191. PMC 5282831. PMID 27511903.
{{cite journal}}

- @Trappist the monk: Thanks! Worked like a charm! Now that I know "embargo" is the term to use, I found the word on the template page, but the description of how to use it is not at all clear. Perhaps you or other experienced editors could give a clear example of how to use "embargo" on that template page. Thanks again, JeanOhm (talk) 17:54, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Good morning, i note that you have not been thus far assisted or prompted with the most authentic material (in printed form) on/about the caption topic. May be this is due to your creeping and crawling limitations OR is it that the pen behind have hidden ?
Thus i would like to draw your kind attention to the following site (Authentic Mss.)

- Hello, IP user. The answer to questions about why certain information is not a Wikipedia article is usually "because none of the thousands of volunteer editors has put it in". (Sometimes it is because the information is not cited to reliable published sources, or because the consensus is that the information is not encyclopaedic). If there is information you think should be added to an article, you are welcome to add it, particularly if you have high quality sources to cite. Alternatively, you could make your suggestions on the talk page of the article. But please assume good faith. --ColinFine (talk) 10:33, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
Recreation of the Monolithic Deathcult wikipage
[edit]Dear Administrators
I want to recreate the Monolithic Deathcult wikipage as it is very much an active Dutch band. Currently the page is locked from recreation as it has been deleted, but I see no reason why there should not be a page for that band as there is one in among other German.
Can you help me?
--Kimse84 (talk) 07:39, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hello, Kimse84. I can't find any evidence that there has been a page deleted called Monolithic Deathcult. But the answer is that it up to the person proposing the article to establish that the subject is notable (in Wikipedia's special sense). My suggestion if you want to create an article is (after reading Your first article) to use the Article wizard to create a draft in Draft space. When you submit it for review, the reviewer who accepts it will sort out moving it to mainspace, including overcoming a creation lock if necessary. Note that being "active" is not sufficient, and the fact that there is an article in de.Wikipedia is not decisive, as different language Wikipedias are independent projects with their own rules and policies.--ColinFine (talk) 10:44, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- Hello, ColinFine. Thank you for taking your time to answer my reply. The reason you cannot find it, is because I cannot spell. The band is called "Monolith Deathcult". They are currently signed with Hammerheart Records, but have also been signed with Season of Mist. They have a German entry.--Kimse84 (talk) 15:51, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
When I click on "ask a new question," I get redirected to the editing page.
[edit]On the reference page, where I am supposed to be able to ask factual questions, I click on "ask a new question," and get redirected to the editing page. I am also required to log in even though I am already logged in. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Miriamkilmer (talk • contribs) 14:48, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- This is correct behavior. You are supposed to input your question in the opened editing box. Ruslik_Zero 16:59, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Miriamkilmer: The reference desks are sometimes semi-protected to protect against vandalism. The post here was your ninth edit and you have since made your tenth, making you autoconfirmed and able to edit semi-protected pages. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:35, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

My previous account & username have disappeared
[edit]I've been out of activity for quite long time, just to find that my account exists no more. To whom should I address this matter (including access to my previous editions & contributions) ? Thank you, בנצי (talk) 18:41, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- Which name had the account? Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 18:42, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- בנצי, try logging in with your old username but add "~enwiki" to the end. For example, if it were me I'd use Crow~enwiki . A few years ago a lot of users got renamed to make all usernames unique across all projects. See mw:SUL finalization for the details on that. CrowCaw 19:03, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
Topicons
[edit]Hey - I noticed that changing the order of the topicons is ineffective. For example {{email user topicon}}{{trout me}} and {{trout me}}{{email user topicon}} will have the same result - the email icon will be first because the default is alphabetical order. Is there a way to change the order?
HillelFrei• talk • 20:36, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Hillelfrei: Both these templates support a "sortkey" parameter which can override the default order. Something like {{trout me|sortkey=aa}}{{email user topicon|sortkey=bb}} should work. This is described at {{Top icon}}. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:23, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
