Peer Review after Page Moved

[edit]

I recently commented on the Peer Review for The Offies, found here. Because the page was moved from "The Offies (The Off West End Theatre Awards)" to its current location after the review request was posted, the peer review section in the talk page is not connected to the peer review, and shows the default "choose a topic" box.

I'm not sure what can be done about this to connect the peer review to the actual page, but I appreciate any help. PotentPotables (talk) 00:35, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@PotentPotables: fixed, you can use the |page= parameter to specify a title if the article and peer review page don't match. – Teratix 06:17, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2020–21 United States Network Televison Schedule

[edit]

I Created the 2020–21 United States Network Televison Schedule Article 5 Weeks Ago and it has 4 references. is it enough to become a article. 68.103.78.155 (talk) 02:32, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you refer to Draft:2020-21 United States network television schedule. Please be patient, as it is awaiting review. The Articles for Creation backlog is quite high right now, with most reviews taking at least 8 weeks. Captain Eek Edits Ho Cap'n! 05:14, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Clutter family murders. Some editor (User:Creffett) placed this article under "speedy delete due to copyright violations". The article was still there, just a few minutes ago. I went to that editor's Talk Page (User talk:Creffett) ... typed a message (similar to the message I am typing here below) ... and when I returned to the "Clutter" article, it was completely gone.

I created the article Clutter family murders. When I first created this article, some copyright violations were suspected. However, it turned out -- I was told -- that the suspicions were erroneous. I forget the exact details. But, it was something like this. I created the article "Clutter family murders". Some of the material for the new Clutter family murders article was taken directly from the Wikipedia article In Cold Blood. Someone suspected that the material was a copyright violation. They stated that the material for Clutter family murders and the material for In Cold Blood was copied from some other website. Some other editor looked into it further. They said that it was actually a "reverse copyright". They said that the website in question -- I forget the actual website name -- actually had copied the material from Wikipedia. So, that made it "appear" as a copyright violation, due to some computerized comparison software. In other words, the other article on the Internet had actually copied the content from Wikipedia. Not vice-versa. So, the two article contents appeared similar. So, the software "picked it up" as a copyright violation. I would like someone to please remove the "speedy deletion request". And also to restore the now-deleted article. I will look for the "old conversations" where this first came up, but I am not sure if I can find it. I forget exactly where it was discussed. But I do believe it was on this very Help Desk. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 06:09, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the original discussion, on this very Help Desk, from October 4, 2019: Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2019 October 4#Question about copyright violations. User:Ivanvector is the editor who "dug around" and discovered the "reverse copyright" situation. User:Ivanvector left comments to that effect in the discussion herein linked. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 06:16, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
See, also, Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2019 October 4#I received a "copyright violation warning". How can I look at that warning? It seems to be deleted / inaccessible.. This is a "follow-up" discussion that immediately followed the discussion linked above (on the October 4, 2019, version of this same Help Desk Page). Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 06:27, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The "external" website that apparently created the "reverse copyright" situation is this: https://pieceofmindful.com/2018/01/07/cold-blood-and-weak-tea/. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 06:30, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, yes, the text in In Cold Blood does appear to pre-date the external source. It might be possible to restore it (but that'd make a bit of a mess in fixing the attribution problem - if it's straightforward to rebuild it, doing the attribution right, that'll be easier). I'd recommend spending a little time verifying the In Cold Blood text isn't an unnoticed copyvio - I deleted it as a copyvio because it was recent, and the external source was old, but it also "felt like" a copyvio - the text reads like it wasn't written for Wikipedia, but for a dust jacket or something. WilyD 08:00, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
"Some editor" here. That last bit is why I tagged - I was aware that there had been concerns about copyvio, but all of the sources I saw predated the article, I wasn't aware of the intra-wiki copy from In Cold Blood, and the text of the article really looked like a book blurb rather than an encyclopedia article. creffpublic a creffett franchise (talk to the boss) 14:21, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. So (A) how do we "fix" this current problem? And (B) how do we "fix" this situation, generally, so that it does not re-occur in the future? In other words, I am sure that there are plenty of external websites that copy from Wikipedia. Then, I assume the "copyright duplication software" picks it up as a duplicated source and, therefore, as a copyright violation. How do we prevent this from recurring in the future ... at this Clutter article and/or at any other article? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 16:30, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Joseph A. Spadaro: Re B: If you know about the reverse copying, you can add Template:Backwards copy to the article's talk page so that future editors will know that the similarity between the article and a particular Web site has been investigated and no copyvio on our part has been found. Deor (talk) 17:29, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Deor: Thanks. But, the Talk Page does not exist anymore. It got deleted, along with everything else. I did not want to create a "new" Talk Page, assuming that the "old one" will get re-established. Also: who exactly does the "official investigating" to assert that no violation exists? I don't know anything about that sort of stuff. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 18:22, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, it's late, and I should go home to my family. I'll try to sort it out tonight or tomorrow. Technically the attribution statements you left are slightly insufficient (they page/history is supposed to be linked Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia ) but this is sortable. There's instructions at Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks on getting other hosts to acknowledge they're taking Wikipedia's content, but that's pretty miss and miss harder. Also this kind of thing happens from time to time, when you're copying within Wikipedia, it looks a lot more like a copyvio than when someone else copies us, because the text appears all at once, rather than builds up naturally over time. It's probably worth putting an pre-emptive response to possible copy-vio reports (including bots who'll do this). I suspect that'll head most off at the pass. WilyD 17:23, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@WilyD: Thanks. You state: It's probably worth putting an pre-emptive response to possible copy-vio reports (including bots who'll do this). I suspect that'll head most off at the pass. I really don't know what any of that means. So, how exactly do I do so, for this Clutter article? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 18:26, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I meant to say "on the talk page", but then forgot. Sorry. WilyD 20:28, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Which I see, you have already done. Thanks. Thanks for restoring the article. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 20:33, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it was mostly my fuckup in the first place, eh? WilyD 20:35, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, agreed. Glad it's resolved. No worries. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 20:37, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@WilyD: Oops! Not really resolved yet. This article -- Clutter family murders -- used to have quite a few redirects, directing to it. They seem to be gone now. Can they be restored? Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 20:41, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you created them, pulling them from your (deleted) edit history isn't hard. Otherwise ... I'm not sure. I'm not aware of a way to find deleted redirects genertically. WilyD 05:39, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I will ask about this in a new section, below. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 01:33, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Editing a U.S. Cabinet infobox

[edit]

I am trying to add four new positions for certain U.S. Cabinet infoboxes of previous U.S. Presidents. Those four new positions are "Counselor to the President", "Director of Central Intelligence", "Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency", and "White House Counsel." These four positions were at Cabinet-ranking in certain previous administrations. I need someone to add these four positons to the template for the U.S. Cabinet infobox so I can start using them. When I try to add them to an infobox now, they don't show up when I publish the changes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.2.40.212 (talk) 06:13, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is probably not an appropriate place for your biography. Please read WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY. A more appropriate place might be Everybody Wiki.--Shantavira|feed me 09:50, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Amandaedirisingheg. You have misunderstood the purpose of a user page (see WP:User pages). It must not look like an article, and is likely to be deleted. You are welcome to copy the contents to your sandbox at user:Amandaedirisingheg/sandbox or to a draft article if you wish to retain the contents, but the content needs WP:Reliable sources if it is ever to become a Wikipedia article. Neither user pages nor sandboxes are ever indexed by Google because they are not part of the official Wikipedia. See WP:Articles for creation, but also take note of the advice given above. Dear sir I'm a well known personality and kindly inform me how other celebrities create pages on Wikipedia pls..I have provided references too

Amandaedirisinghg — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amandaedirisingheg (talkcontribs) 10:41, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Amandaedirisingheg "Celebrities" do not create pages on Wikipedia. I think you have confused Wikipedia with social media- Wikipedia is not social media. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that summarizes what independent reliable sources state about article subjects that meet Wikipedia's special definition of notability; more specifically in this case, the definition of a notable person. Wikipedia is not interested in what someone wants to say about themselves. If you just want to tell the world about yourself, you should use social media or your own website.
Also understand that a Wikipedia article is not necessarily desirable. There are good reasons to not want one. 331dot (talk) 10:47, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Please also read the Wikipedia policy on autobiographical articles; in short, they are highly discouraged. 331dot (talk) 10:48, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The references that you provided are mainly to sources that are not considered reliable by Wikipedia. See WP:Reliable sources. Dbfirs 13:09, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If you did not have an email attached to your account, and have forgotten your password, there is nothing that can be done to regain access. You will need to create a new account and immediately identify it as a successor to your original account. 331dot (talk) 11:35, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Roman numerals or letters for notes?

[edit]

I was wondering if Roman numerals or letters are used for notes in lists? Characters in the Mario Kart series uses Roman numerals and Characters in the Super Smash Bros. series uses letters. Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 12:08, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Either one can be used, it's just up to the authors of each article. Wikipedia doesn't mandate a particular style. – Thjarkur (talk) 13:14, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, ok. Thanks Thjarkur Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 13:19, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Delete false information

[edit]

There are false articles aimed at inciting hatred on ideological and national grounds. I understand that in Europe and the USA there is hatred of Russia and its people and create an inhuman image of people living in the USSR and Russia. I consider unacceptable articles where there is no documentary evidence. It seems that the person who composed the article suffered from sexual concern and scribbled myths in his articles that the Russians had raped someone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.158.229.242 (talk) 12:29, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is based on accounts in WP:Reliable sources. You should not remove these sources, even if you believe them to present a biased account. Instead, you should find other reliable sources that present an alternative view, and thus present a referenced counter-argument. The correct place for this discussion is the talk page of the article Talk:Soviet invasion of Manchuria. Dbfirs 12:57, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia does not judge things to be "true" or "false"; please read WP:TRUTH. 331dot (talk) 14:46, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
46, your edits to Soviet invasion of Manchuria made the unreferenced (and implausible) claim that American soldiers were involved in the Soviet invasion of Manchuria. If you are going to make such edits, you'll need to provided documentary evidence yourself. Maproom (talk) 15:40, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hiding a list

[edit]

The Canadian literature article has a very long list of awards that should be hidden. How can I do this?–I will of course seek agreement first. Rwood128 (talk) 13:40, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Rwood128: A bit off-topic: you can link to a section with an ordinary wikilink syntax, too. No need to use full URL. Plain: Canadian literature#Awards, or piped: list of awards. --CiaPan (talk) 14:28, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
What concerns hiding, probably Help:Collapsing can be helpful. --CiaPan (talk) 14:29, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks but I do not have the expertise. Isn't there a simple template than can be added? Otherwise, if you can direct me to an example I can maybe copy, using cut-and-paste? Rwood128 (talk) 14:43, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:COLLAPSE.
Trappist the monk (talk) 15:17, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Trappist the monk, my reading of this is that "hide" should not be used in this case and that therefore the list needs either to be ruthlessly cut or made into a separate sub-article. Am I correct? Rwood128 (talk) 01:16, 6 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that's why I posted that link. As to the lists themselves being ruthlessly cut or made into a separate sub-article, I don't see much need for that. Perhaps you should raise the issue at Talk:Canadian literature so that editors who watch that page can discuss.
