The British Army created several field armies during the Second World War. There were formations that controlled multiple army corps, which in turn controlled numerous divisions. An army would also control additional artillery, engineers, and logistical units that would be used to support the subordinate corps and divisions as needed. Each army was generally under the control of a higher formation, such as an army group or a command. Over the course of the war, eight armies were formed by the British Army. An attempt to form a ninth – the Second British Expeditionary Force, the second overall – was made, and one regional command was redesignated as an army for a short period. Inter-allied co-operation resulted in the creation of the First Allied Airborne Army, and deception efforts saw a further four armies existed within the British military structure. Seventeen armies, real or fictitious, were created, although they did not all exist at the same time. (Full list...)

Vyacheslav Molotov
Vyacheslav Molotov

The first deputy premier of the Soviet Union was the deputy head of government of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Despite the title, the office was not necessarily held by a single individual. A first deputy premier was responsible over a specific policy area. For example, Kirill Mazurov was responsible for industry, while Dmitry Polyansky was responsible for agriculture. In addition, an officeholder would be responsible for coordinating the activities of ministries, state committees, and other bodies subordinated to the government. Twenty-six individuals held the post of first deputy premier. The first officeholder was Valerian Kuybyshev, who was inaugurated in 1934. Lavrentiy Beria spent the shortest time in office, serving for 113 days. At more than seventeen years, Vyacheslav Molotov (pictured) spent the longest time in office, and held his position through most of Joseph Stalin's term as Premier of the Soviet Union, as well as through the chairmanships of Georgy Malenkov and Nikolai Bulganin. Hurricane Gordon on November 18
Hurricane Gordon on November 18

Seven named storms, of which three became hurricanes, formed during the below-average 1994 Atlantic hurricane season. The season officially began on June 1 and ended on November 30, dates that conventionally limit the period of each year when tropical cyclones tend to form in the Atlantic. The first named storm of the year, Tropical Storm Alberto, formed on June 30. The last storm of the season, Hurricane Gordon (pictured), dissipated on November 21. Alberto produced significant rainfall and flooding in the Southeastern United States, damaging or destroying more than 18,000 homes, and inflicting $750 million (1994 USD) in damages. Gordon caused damages from Costa Rica to North Carolina in its six landfalls; extreme flooding and mudslides from the storm caused about 1,122 fatalities in Haiti. (Full list...)
