This month was a little different in that the 2018 UK higher education strike occurred on 14 dates from 22 February until 20 March 2018 and the Beast from the East snowstorms affected 27 February to 3rd March 2018.

Projects delivered

Strategic Goal 1

Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.

Outcomes

• Final Women in Medicine - Wikipedia editathon planning meeting held on 12 February 2018.
• Women in Red editathon held on 22 February 2018 for the Festival of Creative Learning with Alice White, Wikimedian at the Wellcome Library - 17 new articles created and 3 improved.

• Suffragette 100 editathon for International Women's Day 2018 held on 8 March 2018 4 new articles created, 4 improved & 3 drafted..
• Successfully nominated one new article from our 22nd February #Vote100 and Women in Medicine editathon to be included on the front page of Wikipedia in the Did You Know section. The article on Frances Ivens, chief medical officer at the Scottish Women's Hospital at Royaumont, northeast of Paris, has gone from not existing at all on 21 February 2018 to receiving over 5000 views on 27 March 2018.
• Social classification added to 362 accused witches on Wikidata using information from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database and referenced back to this database too. Bubblechart created of the various social classes of the accused Scottish witches from 1563 to 1736.
• Timeline of 6000 notable women born in Latin American countries with pages on English Wikipedia BUT no article on Spanish Wiki created with Navino Evans.
• Created a map showing the birthplace of over 6,000 notable women born in Latin America and listed on Wikipedia but with no article in the Spanish language edition yet.

Strategic Goal 2

Support the development of open knowledge in the UK, by increasing the understanding and recognition of the value of open knowledge and advocating for change at an organisational, sectoral and public policy level.

Outcomes

• Met with Amnesty International Scotland representatives, Lois Wolffe and Pauline Kelly, at the National Library of Scotland on 12 February 2018 to discuss a global Human Rights Defenders editathon on 19 May 2018. Sara Thomas (Wikimedian at SLIC) and Gill Hamilton (Digital Access Manager at the National Library of Scotland) were also in attendance.
• Alice White, Wikimedian in Residence at the Wellcome Library attended our Wikidata hackathon event on 21 February 2018. She reports this session subsequently helped her to deliver her first Wikidata workshop with school students thereafter.
• Held a ScotWiki meetup on the evening of 21 February 2018 in honour of Alice White's visit to Edinburgh - in attendance were Anne-Marie Scott (Learning, Teaching & Web Services, University of Edinburgh), Gavin Willshaw (Digital Curator, University of Edinburgh0, Kirsty Lingstadt (Head of Digital Library & Deputy Head of Library and University Collections, University of Edinburgh), Susan Ross (Gaelic Wikipedia in Residence, National Library of Scotland), Gill Hamilton (Digital Access Manager, National Library of Scotland), Sara Thomas (Wikimedian in Residence at the Scottish Library and Information Council) and others.
• Helped facilitate meeting between Alice White and Joseph Marshall, Head of Special Collections and Centre for Research Collections at the University of Edinburgh, on 22 February 2018 to discuss the work the Wellcome Library had undertaken in sharing their image collections to Wikimedia Commons.
• Met with Daria Cybulska, Wikimedia UK, on Monday 26 February to discuss the creation of a new Wikipedia in the Classroom - UK Case studies booklet.
• Liaised with Melissa Highton, Assistant Principal at the University of Edinburgh, on a submission for the Academia and Wikipedia conference taking place at Maynooth University on 18 June 2018. This proposal has now been submitted and accepted.
• Took part in an initial Skype discussion on 5 March 2018 with Emma McAllister at Queen's University, Belfast, with a view to planning a webinar on the work of the University of Edinburgh residency (with Q&A) to be held on 3 May 2018.
• Wrote short article for inclusion in the university's BITS magazine on the Wikidata in the Classroom project we took part in with the Data Science for Design MSc course.
• Collaborated with John Lubbock at Wikimedia UK to produce Wikimedia UK blogpost: Data on the history of Scottish witch trials added to Wikidata on 9 March 2018.
• Recorded four video interviews on 9 March 2018 about the value of working with Wikimedia: (1) Gavin Willshaw - Digital Curator (2) Ruth Jenkins - Academic Support Librarian (3) Mark Bradshaw - Translation Studies MSc student (4) Eve Sealy - Reproductive Biology Honours student. • NB: Last month I added 416 'Place of Education' (P69) statements to Wikidata to improve the University of Edinburgh alumni timeline during the Wikidata hackathon. So now William Henry Playfair joins suffragette Bessie Watson in the Histropedia timeline of University of Edinburgh alumni (filter by gender, occupation & place of birth)
• Created short video to demonstrate how to create a Wikidata-driven timeline of university alumni for any institution.
• At the behest of law student, Jemima John, I met with her, Jenni Houston (Digital Skills) and Dr. Rachael Craufurd-Smith, lecturer at the Edinburgh Law school on 9 March 2018. We discussed Jemima's suggestion that the law faculty seriously consider intregrating Wikipedia editing into the curriculum as a way for law undergraduates (& postgraduates) to get further practice in research skills and communicating laws in an accessible way. Dr. Craufurd-Smith is very open to the idea and is considering which year level Wikimedia work would suit best. She sees a Law Society editathon as a first step. Jemima and I are to write a paper about areas of crossover between the study of law and the Wikimedia projects which will further the discussion.

• Sneak peak of the number of views for the newly added MOOC snippets above for March 2018.
• The Wikimedian in Residence channel on Media Hopper now has 224 videos. 29 views this month with 26 plays.
• The Wikimedian in Residence channel on Youtube now has received over 28,699 views in total of its 63 videos with 126 subscribers (2,234 more views approx. since last month and 1 more subscriber, 15 'likes', and 7 'shares' since last month). These videos have been viewed in over 101 different countries this month and in 163 countries around the world over the course of the channel's lifetime.
