Since this course is designated by the University as an intensive-writing class, it involves extensive student research and writing. Through Wikipedia and its student-editing platform, Wiki Education, we will engage in writing exercises that will not only help you become a better writer but will contribute to the world's largest knowledge base. Through the Wiki Education, we will also have the opportunity engage in several rounds of peer and professor feedback.

In terms of the content you will write and contribute to Wikipedia, our goal with this project is to find gaps or weaknesses in the coverage and sourcing of entrepreneurship law-related Wikipedia articles.

Week 9

Course meetings
Monday, 18 October 2021   |   Wednesday, 20 October 2021
Assignment - Choose possible topics

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, page 6

Assignment - Topic Selection One-Pager

Your edits to Wikipedia must add value to the knowledge base.  Therefore, you will have to either find an incomplete Wikipedia page (meaning you would be able to add at least 2,000 words of needed content to it) or prove the nonexistence of one related to an important entrepreneurship law topic of your choosing.  You will then have to write a one-page (single-spaced) justification of your selection.

Your one-pager must answer the following questions:

  • Why is this topic important to entrepreneurs? How do you know this?
  • What have you done to ensure that this topic exists nowhere else on Wikipedia?

A group of your colleagues and I will assess whether or not your topic is appropriate or in need of revision. If it is in need of revision you, of course, must revise until it is approved by your colleagues and me.

10% of assignment grade.  If approved, student will receive full credit.  If revision needed, 10% of this component will be deducted for each round of revision.

This part of the assignment is due on Canvas.

Week 10

Course meetings
Monday, 25 October 2021   |   Wednesday, 27 October 2021
Assignment - Add to an article
Assignment - Exercise
Assignment - Peer Feedback on Topic

Part of this assignment is learning how to effectively evaluate the quality and credibility of sources.  Therefore, you will spend time reading and giving feedback on others’ work on Canvas.  In particular for this round of feedback, you will need to provide a comment or two about your classmate's topic selection.  Think along these lines: Does the selected topic add value to Wikipedia?  Did you find other information on Wikipedia that already addresses the topic?  What would you contribute to the selected topic?  Evaluated on effort and completeness.

Assignment - Draft

Good writing for most mortals takes time and multiple iterations.  You will therefore need to submit a draft of your article. This will be evaluated by your peers using the same rubric that will be used for my final assessment of your work.  See Appendix A in the assignment memo.

Assignment - Peer review two articles

Guiding framework

Milestones

Every student has finished reviewing their assigned articles, making sure that every article has been reviewed.

Assignment - Respond to your peer review

You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.

Resources:

  • Editing Wikipedia, pages 12 and 14
  • Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have any questions.
Assignment - Begin moving your work to Wikipedia

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace."
