Announcement

Shortly after writing music of the Vatican City, I made an announcement about the fact that every independent country in the world has a music article. I would like to declare that Phase 1, and make a list of needed articles and/or stubs from the current status section (say 50 no-articles and 50 stubs) and declare that the completion of reasonably well-done non-stub articles on these subjects will be the end of Phase 2. I had wanted to do a Collaboration of the Week, but I feel that it will be too difficult to do research on subjects which are so often written only in foreign languages; this will provide more choice and opportunities for anyone willing to participate. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to organize the list? (i.e. do we want to specify a number of performers vs genres vs instruments vs other subjects? include internationalizing hip hop, heavy metal or rock and roll more? something else relevant?) Sample uploading project

If I made a WikiProject Sound samples to encourage the uploading of ogg vorbis music samples, would anyone join me? I think it'd be great if we had samples of as much as possible, but it's rather tedious and time-consuming to do in bulk. If you don't know how, it's easy -- I can walk you through on a Mac and point you in the right direction on a Windows. We could even advertise a week in which we encourage Wikipedians to do just two a day for a week, or maybe just one sample for their five favorite bands/albums/whatever -- with the number of users who probably have copious sound samples, we could really move towards having a comprehensive review of music. Missing encyclopedic articles

As a subproject to Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles, Wikipedia:Music encyclopedia topics now exists with a list of articles taken from music encyclopedias (by Gmaxwell). If anyone is looking for something music-related to write, there's a list of ideas. Some of them just need redirects: there's plenty of low-hanging fruit if you're not up for a full article. Various Cuban styles of music sub-categories

I have nominated a number of the sub-categories under Category:Cuban styles of music for deletion, based on the fact that they where either empty or contained only one or two articles, and the articles they did contain where about the music style the category was named after and wold better fit the parent category anyway (IMHO).
This is not my area of expertise however, and I noticed the categories where created by an admin who I also think is a member of this project. So I figured I'd alert you guys to the vote. If there are any good reason for those (to me) seemingly pointles categories to exist please state theyr case at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2005 July 23. --Sherool 01:18, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Child Ballads

Native American/First Nations musicians

Hey, I was wondering if anyone would like to help me, I am making pages for some of the most important Native American/First Nations artists I can think of, and I was hoping that someone would look over my articles, as I tend to make healthy sized articles rather than stubs, but they tend to have a lot of typos and spelling mistakes (any mistakes in this note are purely accidental, but they should illustrate my point). If you would be so kind, I'll be adding the artists to List of Native American musicians, so you can check my additions from the history if you would like. Thanks. I was thinking of mentioning some of these artists on the Music of * pages (for instance Joanne Shenandoah is an institution in Syracuse, NY) but I am not sure how, except by trying to build a new section in each article for Native American/First Nations music. "world music song stub" move proposal

template use

Over the next few days, I will do work to streamline the Musicboxes and make the page easier to use. I would like opinion on whether it is pertinent to have both a {{Infobox Music genre}} and a Musicbox at the same time on an article.

Personnally, I believe such combinations to stretch the article unnecessarily, and have been dealing with them in the follwoing way:

Musicboxes belong on:

• "Music of" articles
• regional genre scenes
• non-genre pages

If a page has a {{Infobox Music genre}} and a Musicbox, put the appropriate link or links to "Music of" in the "Other topic" section and delete the Musicbox.

• {{hawaiianmusic}} is up for deletion.
• Is there any consensus as to which of {{MDmusic}} or {{USstatesmusic}} should be used on individual state pages?

I don't think either genreboxes or musicofboxes should go on more than a few pages. Genreboxes should only go on the genre page (e.g. heavy metal music, not subgenres or other related pages) and the musicofboxes should only go on a handful of pages directly related to the place (e.g. Music of France, music of Corsica, French hip hop, Music history of France). I'm slowly switching to Template:MDmusic as I try to clean up the US states music ofs, so Template:USstatesmusic should eventually be deleted, but not until they've all been converted to the new one. Music of Hawaii has already been done, so Template:Hawaiianmusic can now be safely deleted. Tuf-Kat 21:19, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Music of Eastern Europe, etc.

I've noticed that the article Music of Eastern Europe isn't very good, as it provides a POV definition of Eastern Europe, while asserting what is at best an overgeneralization about "Slavic music tradition" that hardly applies to Moldova, and probably not to the other three countries listed in any meaningful sense (and if true would be better served in an article called, say, Eastern Slavic musical traditions). While the articles about the individual countries are fine, this and other arbitrary subregional divisions are necessarily POV and not terribly useful; most of the others like this (Music of Southeastern Europe) are just as weak, as, indeed, is the stub Music of Europe. I think this is all dealt with better in an article such as Western music.

While it's true music of Eastern Europe is in poor shape, nominating it for deletion won't help. For one thing, there's not going to be consensus to delete it -- I can pretty much guarantee that. Besides, people often discuss and write about Eastern European music, and so we should have an article on it. What we have may be pretty terrible, but that's a reason to improve it, not delete it. This is why I posted my concern about the article here; I'd like those who are knowledgeable about music to fix this article (and the others in the "series"). Sure, there's such a thing as Eastern European music. If the article is to be improved, it needs to focus on this rather than its current unverifiable, original research speechifying about ethnic "tradition"; the article cites no examples of music whatsoever. Likewise, its definition of Eastern Europe needs to be changed; the article Eastern Europe accepts there is no strict definition of the region. ProhibitOnions 18:00, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Looking for expert review

Hi all -- we've got a bunch of lingering music terms over at Wikipedia:Articles_requested_for_more_than_a_year. A number of them appear to be world music-type terms. Anyone want to take a look and either (a) write an article (b) do a redirect if its covered elsewhere or (c) delete the term if it doesn't warrant a full-fledged article? Shiny Shoe Music

The article Shiny Shoe Music has accurate information but a neologistic title. Discussion on Articles for deletion and on the article's talk page have determined that the article must be moved; that discussion also shows that no one knows where to move it to. One suggection is that the article be merged into Jewish music. I am requesting comment here; but please direct all discussion to the article's talk page.
