Marvel's Spider-Man 3 is an upcoming action-adventure video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, it is inspired by the long-running comic book mythology, while additionally drawing from the character's various appearances in other media. It will be the fourth main entry in the Marvel's Spider-Man franchise following Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), Miles Morales (2020) and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023), and the fifth game in Insomniac's shared Marvel universe.

A new entry in the series was first teased prior to the launch of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in September 2023, with its narrative and scope likened to the escalation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)'s overarching narrative. The game's existence alongside other licensed Marvel video games in development was leaked in December 2023 as part of a ransomware attack on the developer.

Development

[edit]

In September 2023, a month prior to the launch of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 for PlayStation 5, narrative director Benjamin Arfmann addressed several possibilities for future games in the series, calling the developer "lucky" if they were afforded the opportunity to follow up on the narrative prospects set up by the prior games.[1] Following the game's launch, Insomniac Games creative director Bryan Intihar spoke to the story potential of a future installment building off of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 as "pretty epic", likening the escalation in scope to the increasing stakes present in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and its overarching narrative. He compared the stories of Marvel's Spider-Man (2018) and its spin-off/continuation Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020) to the Phase One film Iron Man (2008), while saying Marvel's Spider-Man 2 evoked the tone and scale comparable to the Phase Three film Captain America: Civil War (2016).[2]

In December 2023, Insomniac Games was targeted in a ransomware attack by the Rhysidia ransomware gang that involved over 1.67TB of data being leaked, compromising over 1.3 million files, including various development documents, HR documents, personal employee information, gameplay footage, level design, and character materials. Rhysida threatened to publish all procured images and resources obtained from the hack seven days from the incident, holding an auction for the data with a starting price of 50 Bitcoin, equivalent to $2 million USD.[3][4] Upon the deadline's conclusion, company information including employee data, model dumps and pre-production slates for various games in development were published online at Rhysidia's behest. Among these included a roadmap for future titles through 2036 from the developer.[5] Marvel's Spider-Man 3 was revealed to be in pre-production for an internally slated launch in 2028, with considerations made for potentially releasing the game as a multi-part entry.[6] It was additionally revealed that an in-development spin-off game starring Venom and following the character after the events of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, would act as a narrative bridge towards the events of Marvel's Spider-Man 3. Alongside the game's existence, various early prototypes and associated documents surfaced online, insinuating plans for Cindy Moon / Silk to feature as a playable character following her debut in the post-credits sequence of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, and that the Green Goblin would act as the main antagonist after the character Norman Osborn's supporting appearances across the series, with references to the Goblin Nation as a possible enemy faction in the game's overworld.[7][8][9] In March 2024, early concept art of the Green Goblin sourced from the hack was leaked online, further suggesting his presence in the game.[10]
