Amerivision Song Contest

The Amerivision Song Contest 1997 was the fourty-second edition of the annual Amerivision Song Contest, organised by the American Broadcasting Union (ABU), host broadcaster Trinidad and Tobago Television (TTT). The edition was hosted in the Larry Gomes Stadium, in Arima, Trinidad and Tobago, as the country earned the right to host the event by winning the previous edition.

This was the first edition where televoting started to be implemented, in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico and the United States, the vote was decided via public vote for the first time ever, as well as the first edition with the brand new Jamaican broadcaster, Television Jamaica, after Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation dissolved.

The edition ended with the first victory of Suriname, making this the first time a south american country wins the contest since 1985.

Host picking

[edit]

Three trinidadian venues bidded to host the event, with no shortlisting made, both the Larry Gomes and Hasely Crawford Stadium bids were accepted with the condition that a roof would be constructed over the stadium.

Relegations

[edit]

Costa Rica and Nicaragua returned to the contest in this edition, however, Bahamas, Haiti, Netherlands Antilles and the U.S. Virgin Islands withdrew.

Because of that, the number of participants was exactly 24, which made the relegation system not be used in this edition.
