Brian Lara

Had editing conflict with you apparently, which messed up the page (showed up with big chunk of article missing which was still apparently there when I went to edit). Regarding the shortening of display names in college athletics articles

I noticed some school names were shortened to names the media does not regularly use (such as University of Tennessee-Chattanooga to Chattanooga) simply because the school stopped using that name for athletics. Therefore I also shortened the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to Milwaukee, as that school does the same for all athletics. I do think it would be prudent here to continue using the accepted standard of listing a school by their chosen brand when referring to athletics teams, i.e. Wisconsin instead of Wisconsin-Madison, UAB instead of Alabama-Birmingham, Chattanooga instead of Tennessee-Chattanooga, etc., etc. CollegeSportsGuy 11:06, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Mid-major discussion

Mid-major

I had no idea the WAC was a major conference, but the MWC was a mid-major. I've tried reasoning with this fellow here, but have since given up and moved all the non-BCS conferences that met his asinine, undeterminable definitions into the "Major" category, only to have him move several (but not other comparable conferences), including the MWC, back to mid-major. He's also received numerous notes and warnings for his editorial antics and at times, vandalism. Not to mention he's very poor at picking up on sarcasm ;)

Actress

_ _ I couldn't imagine why you'd take the trouble to go thru a LoPbN file changing (female) "actor" to "actress", so i consulted my three Collegiate & larger dictionaries. I found that while there is no question what the denotation of "actress" is, none of them gave "a male who acts" as one of the senses of "actor", nor even (to my surprise) used the phrase "esp. a male one" nor in fact used the word "male" at all.
_ _ I don't touch "actress" in bios (since i don't want to go thru the effort of judging if it is a useful and compact clarification there) despite its current connotation of "professional pop-topper, and not to be classed with DeNiro, Branagh, and other practioners of the highly refined craft". But LoPbN is beset with editors who think it is not so much a nav'l device as a good place to "get out the word" on whoever they see fit to add: vital stats, nationality, and field of endeavor that produced their notability is not enuf, everyone should know their beliefs and ancestry and the highlights of their resume and who they sleep next to. And even extinguishing the current increments of that is more than a full-time job. So whatever clarifies the role of LoPbN as navigational is a plus. "Actress" does nothing to help users who come to LoPbN for what it is relatively good at: helping people who have a rough idea of a person's name find that person's bio, via putting lks to similarly spelled names near each other, and giving just enough of the information they are reasonably likely to already have, so that they can usually rule out names that are close but belong to someone else. Having an explicit statement of the gender of an actor (especially one whose given name is shown!) is of essentially zero value in avoiding finding the wrong actor. And typing extra characters to provide that info is an "All details welcome" sign where substantial effort is being expended to communicate that dates, nationality, and field are the only details acceptable outside of clearly visible special cases like father-and-son politicians with identical names.

PGA Tour event redirects

Before you correct anymore redirects of PGA Tour events on players' pages, you might want to consider the overall maintenance issues. Since PGA Tour (and other tours for that matter) event names change quite frequently, is it easier to go into every event winner's page and change the redirect to the new name of the event or go into each version of the event name and change the redirect to the new name? Rugby

Not a bad effort on the old rugby articles. Are you a fan of the game? Just one tip - in New Zealand, the list of participants ordered by points is called "the table" rather than "the log" (as in "X was top of the table until the unfortunate incident"). Thanks for the 2006 Heartland Championship semifinal updates. I'm still amazed that you've even *heard* of the thing, living outside NZ. On a more personal note, I'm thrilled to see that the two teams I support (the mighty Waikato and the mighty King Country) have not followed their usual pattern of fizzling out early, but are in fact in their respective finals. Are you going to nominate it soon? I saw your posting on it on the College Football Project, are you asking the rest of us for some feedback? Personally, you summarized a game I was unable to see even though I live in downtown Minneapolis, less than a mile from the Gopher's home stadium (thank you, NFL Network...). Athletics at Rutgers University

Here is my comment here, duplicated here for the purpose of redundancy:

• I disagree with the proposed move. Mostly for consistency, and because I don't think it necessary (Athletics at Rutgers University is not ambiguous, it's recognizable, and it's within the guidelines of WP:NAME), and until there is a de jure standard, I think it's best left to the decision of the contributors as long as the contributor's decision isn't a departure from the guidelines WP:NAME (which this isn't). Right now, I'm the majority contributor (98% or so of content). Also, considering that I am intending (eventually) of adding a section about recreational or "club" sports (which some of our varsity teams are being reduced to), I'd prefer to keep it at "Athletics at Rutgers University" rather than moving it Rutgers Scarlet Knights because club sports don't fall under the "Scarlet Knights" rubric. Lastly, for consistency, the articles affiliated with Rutgers are all set up as X at Rutgers or X of Rutgers. History of Rutgers University won't be renamed Rutgers University history because most affiliated history articles are entitled History of X. To have one article be renamed as such (or even as Rutgers University athletics) and others X of Rutgers, etc. would be deal an aesthetic deficiency to any enumeration of Rutgers-related articles. Lastly, this article's title is consistent with an incalculable number of articles like Transportation in Azerbaijan, Politics of New Jersey, etc. —ExplorerCDT 09:45, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Greg Page Apartments (University of Kentucky)

I found the campus plan that provides a lot of insight on future projects and renderings. I would like to incorporate the renderings and map sketches into the pages, but wondered if splitting it off onto another article would be best. For now, I placed some at Buildings at the University of Kentucky#Future. I also created Greg Page Apartments (University of Kentucky), but this needs expansion with the future residential village (that will include the demolition of Shawneetown) - but should the two complexes be combined into one article? LoPbN

I'm writing about three aspects of your work on the LoPbN tree:

1. I've intended for some time to address more than an edit summary to your use of what i'd perhaps describe as "British sub-nationalities" on sports-figure entries, but worrying the discussion would take more time than i want to give it right now in the face of other (even more) pressing LoPbN matters. Let me just hint at my line of thot for now, w/o giving in to the temptation to muster what i always fantasize will be an irresistable compilation of evidence! To wit, the format of LoPbN is intended to be terse and standardized (rigidly so, frankly, in both cases), and to parallel WP:MOSBIO, which calls for vital stats & what i think of as "passport nationality" (for moderns) in the lead sent. I think i grasp the merits of your preference, and i would support its use in bio articles, in the context of a style guideline consistent with keeping the beginning of the lead sent as at present, and with avoiding confusion. Regardless, i can't see how it could reasonably be fitted into LoPbN entries, since it amounts to a special case for a single area of endeavor, and for few (if more than one) fully recognized independent states. I've been (at most!) sporadic at reversing your introductions of it, bcz i don't want to deal now with that distraction if we can't easily reach agreement about it. And for now, i'm going to try to be even more conscientiously blind to new and old instances -- unless you should turn out to be so (IMO) unreasonably generous as to respond "Oh, the person not the team; OK, i get it." in response to such a brief case as this.
2. I think there is probably no harm (and maybe a bit of long-term benefit, via increasing awareness on the part of infrequent entry contributors) in your practice of converting existing entries to {{Tl:LoPbN Entry}} transclusions. But for me that would be more work than i see as worthwhile. I think its creator was intent on reducing mis-formating (with ease of formatting the lk itself as a side benefit); my sense is you are too conscientious to need the Tl to get it right, nor by the same token, to save enuf effort in getting it right to benefit from not having to think abt the punctuation. I use the Tl in 2 situations myself, with the goal of saving effort:

   -- when adding new entries, and

   -- when fixing entries that need piping bcz the original editor lk'd unpiped, mentioning only the article title, or only the inverted and/or non-Dab'd version of it.

   That saves me on cut-and-pasting, which i do too much of despite introduction of the Tl. So if you preferred to follow my example in that, my opinion of your work would not suffer in the least.

3. Having said all that, i'd be neglectful if i failed to go on and say that seeing your sig in my intensive RC patrol of the tree is a comforting thing (aside from the thot "oh, gosh, i still haven't given Dale the attention [hmm, i guess Dale Evans's influence was short-lived; i make this 11.5:1 odds against "she", since you're a Yank after all:] he deserves". I appreciate the frequency with which you work on this IMO-under-edited resource, the notability of the entries you add, and your evident care in coding them.

2. convinced me that my stubbornness is counter-productive with respect to the issue you raise (at least most recently) in the form of yr summary

   (→Lai - Lal - For Lalas, "soccer" is a better term than "football". Calling an American a "football" player implies American football.)

   and that your sustained interest in this aspect of LoPbN terminology will likely mean your taking the lead in resolving it, and puts it in good hands in the long run.

While i'm still not convinced that you've already found the best available solution (and while longer experience and perhaps even more eyeballs will surely be worth attention), i think your persistence and apparent intrinsic interest bode well for your leading the effort to identify that solution.
_ _ I don't like counting on users to infer that LoPbN means different things depending on the nationality of the person playing "football" (and not primarily bcz, IIRC, there are Irish nationals playing Australian-rules -- or was it Australians playing Gaelic-rules?): many users may forget that there is any context in which "football" can mean "soccer", or presumaly (for a different set of users), one where it can mean "American football". No more, i think, than you like counting on them to put the broadest possible reading on the word "football", which (under pressure) i have to admit has a similarly spotty prospect of success. I'll mention other thots that i might pursue, if i had adequate dedication to the subject of sports, in line with my sense that

1. providing info on LoPbN pages,
2. using specialized terminology (e.g. lama, deacon, mullah, or for that matter bishop or preacher) where a general description (religious leader, in these cases) will do, or
3. relying on nationality to set context

each undercuts WP goals. I offer these, really, only to perhaps stimulate your imagination in your long-term musings on the problem:

1. I've previously met neither

   a Dab where i saw any justification for including a lk to something other than the article with the best info on one sense of the dab'd term, nor

   an LoPbN entry where i saw any justification for including a lk to something other than the bio of one, (rarely) two, or (almost never -- e.g. Ritz Brothers) three people

   but this may be a situation calling for

   [[<bio-article title>|<inverted name>]] (<vital stats>), <nationality> [[Games involving both running and ball-kicking|kicking-game]] player

2. For either soccer or other-football players (and similarly for other figures related to those sports), whose names are not subject to confusion with those in other team sports, imitate:

   Parker-Dugashvili, Bucky (born 1975), American team-sport player

   but in the few remaining cases, imitate this pair:

   Smith, Jo (born 1970), American team-sport player -- football (soccer)

   Smith, Joe (born 1968), American team-sport player -- football (rugby-descended) [or "(gridiron)" or whatever]

3. For the same bios, but regardless of whether confusion can occur, re the construction <nationality> <game> <role in game> (with <role in game> being, e.g., player, coach, manager, but not a playing position), deploy a bot that tours the LoPbN tree, via Template:List of people by name exhaustive page-index (unsectioned), searching for entries with "football" but lacking the appropriate parenthetical, as the <game>, checking the bio's Cats for descendants of Category:Football, modifying the <game> by inserting the indicated parenthetical (in the absence of a {{No football bot}} tag in the bio), and in other cases providing the operator with the text from the portions of the bio most likely to be relevant, and the options to change the entry to "... (soccer)", etc., or insert the No-football-bot tag, or other options to be determined.

Hi, I need a bit of help from an administrator with some pages. A group of us Wikipedian’s started a WikiProject under the name Wikipedia:WikiProject Kurdistan, but someone went and changed the name of the project and all its subpages to different names. I tired moving some of the pages back, but some of the pages cannot be moved back. It requires an administrator to move them back to their original names. _ _ How time flies! It's been two full months since i've distracted you. I scratched my head a little over your edit on Eidur G.'s LoPbN entry, mostly bcz i've pretty much go around leaving transliterations as i find them, or occasionally moving them in the direction of the article title. But on reflection the point i cite in the "counter annotation" i left there in a comment next to it (re putting even merely-apparent surnames first) applies to your change as well: edh & thorn are for specialists, and thanks for reminding me that just bcz i've been made moderately comfortable with them is no reason to doubt the good sense of their suppression in the piping of LoPbN lks. I'm not gonna make that project, but i'm glad for that edit by you. (I'm not sure what percentage of such usages are on my sometime list of them -- i see that the vaguely familiar Eiður is -- but in case you have enough interest, it's there for you.)

A. W. Tillinghast

On principle, i dislike "golf-course architect": it's too many words for the amt of info it conveys, and it is unlikely to help users, who already roughly know the person's name, in their finding the right person by that name. In practice, i wouldn't care except that it is a camel's nose for the sentence-long descriptions whose elimination "low-resolution terminology" is essentially about (which is why i'm still mulling it). (And i also think architecture is a discipline where even those who are the most narrowly focused on the buildings themselves are competent outdoor architects. (Note the standard "architects and engineers" business model; if there's someone focused on buildings, its the engineers you're thinking of, IMO.) Hope you'll give this more thot; IMO you're more likely to come up with a better term than i, who would probably continue to settle for just "architect". Thanks for your attention.

Scores being removed

Dale, NoseNuggets has removed scores of 2nd round hockey games on Portal:Current events/Sports in what I believe is violation of the consensus on Portal talk:Current events/Sports. I really don't want to start a revert war over there, but it seems like he thinks that he owns the page and trying to convince him is like talking to a brick wall. I looked at the talk page in question, and apparently there was a consensus a year ago to omit individual scores for the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs on the "current events" page, except games that eliminated a team and results that were unusually newsworthy (e.g. multiple overtimes, suspensions). — Dale Arnett 15:54, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

I noticed you switched the positioning of the NHL series games, to put the winner first. I had originally entered them as "away team" vs. "home team". Deletion of Category:Clubs formed by a merger

As the person who started this category, surely I was within my rights to expect that I would be told about the discussion which occurred, in my absence, to delete the category. This would have given me the opportunity to give my reasons for creating it in the first place.

In future, if one of the articles or categories that I started falls into the category for deletion, surely it is only good manners to let me know!!

I had what one might call a "brain fart". Should have thought about looking in the history to see who the creator was. Admittedly, I wasn't the only one who didn't think about looking up the creator, but as the nominator I should have been the first one! Criticism noted and accepted.

World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings

I've noticed that in the article 2006 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings you recently changed every occurrence of "Great Britain" to "United Kingdom" and "Ireland" to "Republic of Ireland". The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities, which issues the WTRR, always refers to GB and Ireland (see IFHA International Agreement, Article 4, Appendix 2). The two regions are covered by separate authorites, the British Horseracing Board and Horse Racing Ireland. Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, is covered by the Irish Board and so "UK" should not be used.
