  • A motion was passed to enact a 500/30 restriction on articles related to the history of Jews and antisemitism in Poland during World War II (1933–45), including the Holocaust in Poland. Article talk pages where disruption occurs may also be managed with the stated restriction.

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello NonsensicalSystem,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Nightjar

Why was my edit (reverting vandalism to an older version) considered vandalism? The page on Nightjar was making incorrect claims relating the Nightjar with Harry Potter, so I reverted it to the previous version. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tumaini (talkcontribs) 21:42, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi, TheZoomTorah has reverted 3 editors' edits 3 times. The last reversion took place one minute after the notice you left him on his talk page. I'm afraid of violating the 3RR rule myself if I revert him again. Is there anything else that can be done now? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 13:34, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

@Yoninah: Best thing to do now is to probably go to an admin noticeboard, such as WP:AIV. NonsensicalSystem(err0r?)(.log) 13:36, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

September 2020

Information icon Hello NonsensicalSystem. Thanks for patrolling new pages – it's a very important task! I'm just letting you know, however, that there is consensus that we shouldn't tag pages as lacking context (CSD A1) and/or content (CSD A3) moments after they are created, as you did at Unawatuna College. It's usually best to wait at least 10–15 minutes for more content to be added if the page is very short, and the articles should not be marked as patrolled. Tagging such pages in a very short space of time may drive away well-meaning contributors, which is not good for Wikipedia. Attack pages (G10), patent nonsense (G1), copyright violations (G12) and pure vandalism/blatant hoaxes (G3) should of course still be tagged and deleted immediately. Thanks. Adam9007 (talk) 17:56, 16 September 2020 (UTC)

@Adam9007: Thanks. In hindsight, it was probably best to G4 the article, as it had been created before. NonsensicalSystem(err0r?)(.log) 09:44, 17 September 2020 (UTC)

GLEN MPANI

Hello, how do you recommend I make the page ready? ( Stephkapfunde (talk) 05:46, 23 September 2020 (UTC) )

@Stephkapfunde: Please stop moving the page into the article space. It is better to use WP:AFC as a more experienced reviewer could see if it is ready, and would be able to provide feedback. Thank you! NonsensicalSystem(err0r?)(.log) 09:36, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

(by talk reader) @Niteshkhare1: Unlike Twitter, Facebook, or other social media you don't get to have your own page on Wikipedia. If you wanted to help our encyclopedia, then there are many ways you could contribute. Chris Troutman (talk) 15:56, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

@Niteshkhare1: But you haven't made a case for notability. Instead of insisting on writing a new article, why not help fix typos and add citations to articles that already exist? If you won't help our encyclopedia in other ways, I have to assume you're you're only here to advertise. You have to tell us if you're being paid to edit. @Niteshkhare1: But Wikipedia doesn't need an article about Nitesh Khare. If you're interested in BJP politicians in Pune, why not work on the article about Murlidhar Mohol? Also, you could find better sourcing for the article about National Student Union of India. We're not going to help you write an article. Chris Troutman (talk) 20:10, 24 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi,

I'm editing the West Windsor, NJ page. A section devoted to history previously did not reference the main source of learning about West Windsor's history - the Historical Society of West Windsor's online museum (very extensive; around 120 web pages). An external link at the bottom of the page would be difficult to see and easily glanced over; the best place to insert a link would be in the text body. Please advise about how to prevent link deletions.

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paulligeti (talkcontribs) 13:28, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

@Paulligeti: Use standard references for citing, such as the {cite} template that should always be used. External links or only using ref tags are not allowed per WP:MOS and WP:CITE. This helps readability. I have converted the refs myself for now, but please comply with guidelines in the future. Thank you! NonsensicalSystem(err0r?)(.log) 13:35, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

I am new to Wikipedia (as of half an hour ago) so does simply using the "citation" button in the Visual Editor option not applicable? I was using that. I was aware about the dispute about external links but not about citations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paulligeti (talkcontribs) 13:39, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

@Paulligeti: That is used, however put the link URL into the 'automatic' section and that should automatically use the cite template correctly. Also, dont forget to use 4 tides (~) to sign your talk page messages to insert your username and the time it was written. Thank you! NonsensicalSystem(err0r?)(.log) 13:43, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

Anything is all right, as long as it is there. My former accounts Harry Shuffle & D Gumms and one or two more ALL got blocked with t.p access removed for no other reason than someone not liking me. FTR I always "editorialise" a fraction when initially editing but it sets the framework for something constructive which others can come along and chop & change. I will be instrumental on Leeds-based articles and nobody is going to stop that unless they can prove I am "banned" or "nonconstructive". Thx. Scrapewell (talk) 16:05, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 03:02, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

Hello. I used the external link in the main body because it was an option, and since there is no entry in wikipedia for this, I hyperlinked it to an external site. I mean (and I say it in a very polite manner), why is there an option for external link in the main body if it is not allowed in general? ElDot (talk) 14:44, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

ElDot, you put external links in the 'External links' section at the end of the article, but before references. If there isnt one, use two '=' to make a section. See WP:EL. Thanks NonsensicalSystem(err0r?)(.log) 14:51, 30 November 2020 (UTC)

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello NonsensicalSystem,

A chart of the 2020 New Page Patrol Queue

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Rank Username Num reviews Log

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Why this revert?

I think that Shein (the retail company) must have its own page

@Pulimento: You are welcome to help develop a page on Shein, by creating a draft and put it thorugh AfC, however you may not replace the content of articles. Making drafts is an easier way of creating an article for a new editor such as yourself, as it allows more experienced editors to check them for issues before they are added. Neath RFC under the Organisation and Finance

Hi there,

I work for the current owners of Neath RFC and they have asked for the legal and financial information relating to Neath RFC under the Organisation and Finance section to be removed. It compromises ongoing activities by the organization and is commercially sensitive. Is there a way we can limit the information?

Thanks,

Hello. First of all, if you are being paid to edit by your company, you must disclose this on you user page (see WP:PAID). You may also wish to read WP:COI to know more about editing with a conflict of interest.
