- Liz, I'm not sure these should be deleted. They have {{Possibly empty category}} now (which they didn't have before due to a template not being updated after a category rename). — Qwerfjkltalk 21:21, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Growth team newsletter #29
Welcome to the twenty-ninth newsletter from the Growth team! Help with translations
Community Conversations
The Growth team will host its first community conversation Monday, 4 December (19:00 - 20:30 UTC). The topic for this meeting will be Mentorship.
This first meeting language will be English, but we plan to host conversations in other languages, and about other topics. Please visit the conversation page on-wiki for the details on how to join. You can also watch the page, or suggest ideas for upcoming conversations there.
Impact Module
At the beginning of November 2023, the Growth team deployed the New Impact Module to all Wikipedias. We recently released a follow up improvement to how edit data was displayed based on editor feedback. [1]
Add a Link
We released “add a link” to 35 more Wikipedias. [2] [3]
We have a few Wikipedias remaining:
- German and English Wikipedia will be contacted at the beginning of January 2024.
- There are a few small wikis that will not receive the task until they have enough articles for the algorithm to work properly.
Community Configuration
- We shared Community Configuration 2.0 plans with technical stakeholders. [4] 🖂
- Initial Community Configuration design ideas have been shared and discussed with community members.
- A basic Community Configuration 2.0 demo is released on ToolForge.
- Developers can find some initial proof of concept code shared on gitlab.
Mentorship
When a mentor marked themselves as "Away", they were not getting their name assigned to new accounts when they returned. This has been fixed. [5]
We improved the message received by newcomers when their mentor quits, to reduce confusion. [6]
We worked on ensuring that all mentees are assigned to an active mentor. This required reassigning mentees with no mentors to a new mentor. We paused this as the clean-up script confused some editors. We will resume it when the identified blockers are resolved. [7]
It is now possible to create an Abuse Filter to prevent one user from signing up as a mentor. [8]

Bot malfunction
Hi. The bot has sent me a wrong message (not my bad), pls try and fix. Thanks, Arminden (talk) 11:40, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- Arminden, in this edit you added two references that were missing
|title=
, and had several other errors. — Qwerfjkltalk 13:48, 10 December 2023 (UTC)- I see, thank you. I understood the msg to mean that I had left section headings w/o title (I usually 1st set the = signs and then add the titles), and this time I hadn't :)
- I have re-checked now: I had used chapter & work instead of chapter & title, the template doesn't allow it, it appeared in red, and I fixed it right away, more or less. Not to insist picking on the bot, but for instance DAB issues lead to messages to one's talk page only after a while, so not if you fix them within a certain time interval.
- Thanks again, Arminden (talk) 20:01, 10 December 2023 (UTC)
- Arminden, yes, the bot waits 15 minutes before notifying you. — Qwerfjkltalk 21:32, 10 December 2023 (UTC)

Would you consider becoming a New Page Reviewer?
- Hi Qwerfjkl, we need experienced volunteers.
- New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
- Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
- Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision (if it looks daunting, don't worry, it basically boils down to checking CSD, notability, and title). If this looks like something that you can do, please consider joining us.
- If you would like to join the project and help out, please see the granting conditions. You can apply for the user-right HERE.
- If you have questions, please feel free to drop a message on my talk page or at the reviewer's discussion board.
- Cheers, and hope to see you around — ❯❯❯ Raydann(Talk) 17:03, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

- Jenhawk777, really? When i got to the DOI link (https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.2307/3040773) it seems to have a title. — Qwerfjkltalk 10:02, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- That's the title of the book being reviewed not the article. Jenhawk777 (talk) 16:08, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- Jenhawk777, something like "Review of Authority and the Sacred: Aspects of the Christianisation of the Roman World."? — Qwerfjkltalk 16:11, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- Yep, but that's exactly what I already did. The reference reads: " cite journal|last=Rosser|first=John|title= Untitled Book Review of Authority and the Sacred: Aspects of the Christianisation of the Roman World by Peter Brown|journal=Speculum| volume= 72|issue=3|year=1997| pages=793–95|url= https://doi.org/10.2307/3040773 Jenhawk777 (talk) 16:17, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- Jenhawk777, yes, that is fine. The error is fixed. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:28, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- Okay, what did you change? The ref looks exactly the same to me. Jenhawk777 (talk) 17:11, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- Jenhawk777, when you added the title you fixed the error. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:23, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- But that was done 5 days ago - before the bot said there was a problem. Here is the diff: [14]. What do you suppose happened? Is it because it's not a real title? Jenhawk777 (talk) 17:44, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- Jenhawk777, strange. I have only encountered this bug once before, and it's very hard to reproduce. I think you can safely ignore the message. — Qwerfjkltalk 17:46, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- That's kind of what I was already doing. I was just letting you know because the message asked. Good luck on figuring it out! Jenhawk777 (talk) 19:03, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Command and Control (23:30, 11 December 2023)
Hello, if an article is constantly edited by a same person in bad faith and an act of vandalism how do I proceed? --Command and Control (talk) 23:30, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- Command and Control, if you're referring to edit warring then you could take it to the Edit warring noticeboard. Please not that vandalism has a very specific meaning on Wikipedia - do not use it to describe edits you simply disagree with. — Qwerfjkltalk 09:08, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
- No, I was referring to editing of the article by the user who changes his/hers name and edits this article in bad faith every few month. Command and Control (talk) 09:29, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
- The latest edit happened on 9th of December and again this user erased few parts of the articles especially related to the Jewish activities of the subject of the article, which one would consider bad faith and vandalism aka racism. Command and Control (talk) 09:32, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
- Command and Control, I cannot comment on their edits without knowing any more context. What article are you referring to? — Qwerfjkltalk 09:44, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Eatmymvsic (11:03, 12 December 2023)
Hi I’m trying to creat a page for frank alvarez he is a podcaster. how can I do that? --Eatmymvsic (talk) 11:03, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
- Eatmymvsic, Welcome! Creating a new article from scratch is extremely challenging, and new editors are strongly recommended to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to some of our existing six million articles before trying it. When you do decide to have a go at a new article, you are highly encouraged to read WP:Your first article. If you haven't already also check out WP:TUTORIAL; it's a lot of fun! Happy editing! — Qwerfjkltalk 11:59, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:JFL map templates by year
A tag has been placed on Category:JFL map templates by year indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. ✗plicit 14:47, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Categories: "Water monsters" to "Water cryptids"
I've noticed you've moved a lot of categories from the neutral "water monster" to the WP:PROFRINGE "water cryptid", using conspiracy theory/fringe language. Could you explain these moves? :bloodofox: (talk) 18:57, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- Bloodofox, I linked in my edit summaries to the CfD that discussed it. — Qwerfjkltalk 19:44, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- All I see is a brief exchange. This is not an improvement. Please self-revert. Anything in the "cryptid", which is a fringe term used by the cryptozoology subculture, needs to be under the neutral term monster instead. :bloodofox: (talk) 19:58, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Marcocapelle, what do you think we should do? — Qwerfjkltalk 20:03, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
- I'd suggest you just reopen/relist the discussion. Technically User:Bloodofox may be referred to WP:MRV but the MRV discussion is likely to result in a relist anyway. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:12, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Qwerfjkl (bot) – ScottDNelson
Page: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev
Diff: Special:Diff/1187873298
Comment/question: Ok I fixed the issue with the citation - now what? Will the bot update its comment on my talk page? User talk:ScottDNelson Should i 'archive' it somewhere, or delete its comment? The bot doesnt explain how to verify issue is fixed and/or what to do after
ScottDNelson (talk) 20:18, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
- ScottDNelson, you can archive or delete the bot's comment as you wish. The bot does not check to see if you've fixed the issue (and I'm not sure monitoring thousands of pages to see if issues are fixed would be practical). — Qwerfjkltalk 21:17, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
- Depends a little i guess if the bot is checking only for new citations that could have any issues, or monitors any updates as well to see if there's anything that looks off. If its the latter, then the technical difference to also check fixes is trivial in terms of a scaling standpoint, not sure how its coded/implement what lift that is from dev time.
- Also it's a weird flow that the UX:
- 1) Lets someone make a citation, without marking certain fields required
- 2) Updates the page, then flags to user that actually it's improper
- 3) User attempts to fix, but there's no actual verification that it was fixed
- There's some obvious potential improvements there ScottDNelson (talk) 21:30, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
- ScottDNelson, I agree the task could be improved, but it would take a quite a bit of my time, and I would rather spend it elsewhere. — Qwerfjkltalk 11:38, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
- ScottDNelson, I believe that the system is meeting all three of the conditions listed above. When you use Preview before publishing your edit, the Citation Style 1 templates like {{cite book}} show you a red error message when you have omitted a required parameter or made a similar error. That message is also displayed if you publish your change without fixing the problem. Each error message contains a link to help text that should be able to assist you in resolving the error. If you subsequently follow the instructions and fix the error, the error message goes away. If you think that the templates could be improved in some way, the venue to propose changes is Help talk:CS1. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:53, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- Jonesey95, I think ScottDNelson is talking about improving my bot, not the CS1 templates. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:58, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Qwerfjkl is correct - i was referrig to the bot not the editor (BTW - i didnt see an error in editor, its been a while so memory is hazy but not sure if because i didnt hit preview or because i was using old editor instead of visual editor) ScottDNelson (talk) 23:42, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
