RS second opinion

Levitt is a published author, which is a major plus. I'd be inclined to accept it as reliable enough, but be ready to tell the FAC people that he is a published author if they ask. As long as you don't use it too much I think you'll be okay. One thing I note is that the biography itself appeared in a published book; if you could find that book and cite it that would take care of any concerns by itself. I had the exact same situation with an article recently, where I was able to find a copy of an online article by a historian in a book and cite the book, leaving some cites to the online source for items added since the book's publication. Reminds me: I'd like to ask you to look at that article at some point. Not sure if you'd think the topic is that interesting, but it's something I started from scratch and would like to finish someday. Giants2008 (Talk) 18:37, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 March newsletter

We are over half way through the second round of this year's WikiCup and things are going well! Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), of Pool B, is our highest overall scorer thanks to his prolific writings on television and film. In second place is Pool H's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), thanks primarily to work on biological articles, especially in marine biology and herpetology. Third place goes to Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions), who also writes primarily on biology (including ornithology and botany) and has already submitted two featured articles this round. Of the 63 contestants remaining, 15 (just under a quarter) have over 100 points this round. However, 25 are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly. 32 contestants, the top two from each pool and the 16 next-highest scorers, will advance to round 3.

Congratulations to Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions), whose impressive File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg became the competition's first featured picture. Also, congratulations to Florida 12george1 (submissions), who claimed good topic points, our first contestant this year to do so, for his work on Wikipedia:Featured topics/1982 Atlantic hurricane season. This leaves featured topics and featured portals as the only sources of points not yet utilised. However, as recent statistics from Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) show, no source has yet been utilised this competition to the same extent it has been previously!

It has been observed that the backlogs at good article candidates are building up again. While the points for good article reviews will be remaining constant, any help that can be offered keeping the backlog down would be appreciated. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Page history merge?

I created a redirect for a page recently. When that page was ready to blossom into a full article, someone else created a new article for it and redirected my redirect to that page. It was a good faith mistake on the new editor's part. I shouldn't care, but I do keep track of how many articles I've created, and that one should be mine based on the work. I'm talking about Dan Otero, which I had created at Danny Otero. Is there a way to do a page history merge on that so that my redirect in February is the page's first edit? – Muboshgu (talk) 23:43, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Roger Hornsby on a 1921 Exhibits baseball card wearing a St. Louis Cardinals road uniform

Rogers Hornsby (1896–1963) was an American baseball infielder, manager, and coach who played 23 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). Hornsby was named the National League (NL)'s Most Valuable Player (MVP) twice, and was a member of the 1926 World Series champions. In 1915, he began his major league career with the St. Louis Cardinals and remained with the team for 12 seasons, winning his first MVP and his only World Series. He then played for the New York Giants and Boston Braves before being traded to the Chicago Cubs. He played with the Cubs for four years and won his second MVP before the team released him in 1932. Hornsby re-signed with the Cardinals in 1933, but was released partway through the season and was picked up by the St. Louis Browns. He remained there until his final season in 1937. From 1925 to 1937, Hornsby was intermittently a player-manager. He later managed the Browns in 1952 and the Cincinnati Reds from 1952 to 1953. Sportswriters consider Hornsby to be one of the best hitters of all time. His career batting average of .358 is second to Ty Cobb in MLB history. He also won two Triple Crowns, and is the only player to hit 40 home runs and bat .400 in the same year (1922). He was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1942. (more...)

WikiCup 2012 April newsletter

Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's New York City Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.

65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions) and United Kingdom Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, England Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Bavaria Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.

An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Request for help from Oversight

An editor made some changes to an article that I created and edit occasionally as time permits. This user has attempted to "out" me in the revision history of that page, (The Necronauts), on an edit completed at 23:35 on 10 May 2012. This anonymous user also consistently deletes details for which I have included reference material. This user appears to perhaps be Snatchproof81 or Revisionists, both of which have been suspected sockpuppets of Electronado, who has harrassed me in the past. Unfortunately, my willingness to expand wikipedia (since I created that page) has backfired on me as it appears that possible band members or acquaintances have some personal COI. She and I have become somewhat friendly, and she recently texted me some info on her career. She will be in an upcoming Michael Bay movie with The Rock and Mark Wahlberg and Dr. Bello with Isaiah Washington and Vivica. A. Fox. She will also be representing the U.S.A. in the Miss World 2012 contest. She has write-ups in Global Grind and the New York Times. I ask you because you are the one who deleted it. I figured simply recreating it without talking to the person who deleted it is a wikipedia naughty, but if you don't care, then fine. I'll probably recreate it in the near future. As I state in my comment, she and I have become somewhat friendly. She tells me what is going on in her career, and asks me if I think she's gotten big enough to have her article restored. I tell her I'll find out. Oakley77 GA reviews

It's beyond my competency to reverse the five GAs that Oakley77 put through. You said in the GAN talk page that we need to reverse them, but I don't know how, nor do I know any of the precedents for doing so, or what has traditionally been done when rogue reviewers have had to have their work undone or redone. What the nominators deserve are actual reviews by a competent reviewer; it seems harsh to put them through a reassessment when what they need is a good initial assessment.

Is this something you can do yourself? I've had articles reviewed, but I've never done a review myself because I don't feel fully competent to get all the details right, and something like this is too important to screw up. (I'm also fairly busy these days over at DYK, which has much less stringent standards.) What can be done at this point? BlueMoonset (talk) 00:35, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

I suspect you were merely there to ensure that the review by Oakley77 was in order, but since you passed by, I wanted to solicit your opinion on one aspect of the page. Among the most historically contentious aspects of this person's biography is his role in the suppression of Falun Gong. This morning, the paragraph elaborating on this was deleted[1]. The accompanying talk page discussion is here[2]. I'm not sure about the degree to which you're familiar with this individual or Chinese politics in general, but I don't think it matters. Thanks much for your comment. I'm not sure if you have any interest in wading in further, but I hope you do. I've included a proposed wording based on some of the feedback, which should be located near the bottom of the discussion thread (assuming it hasn't expanded greatly). It's entirely possible that the material is not all necessary, nor ideally worded. The main source of contention seems to be whether the outcome of the lawsuits should be described. Participants in the discussion are torn on the issue, and I can't say it has been the constructive back-and-forth you might have hoped for. Any further feedback is valuable. For your reference, this content was previously (and perhaps begrudgingly) agreed upon some months ago, and was stable until this morning when I evidently upset the balance with this edit[3]. Question on Bulldog Park deletion

Wizardman,

Given the keep result of the recent deletion discussion for Les Miller Field, is there any way to reopen deletion discussion for Bulldog Park? I feel that several of the arguments made for Les Miller that resulted in a keep decision could also have been made for Bulldog Park. I agree that Bulldog Park does not satisfy GNG, but the successful arguments of myself, Arxiloxos, and ben_b focused instead on the fact that Les Miller Field's status as a Division I college baseball venue makes it notable. Such an argument would, of course, apply to Bulldog Park.

I understand completely if the discussion can't be reopened, as it's my fault for not seeing the Bulldog Park deletion discussion in the first place, but I thought I'd at least drop you a line to check. If you'd like a more complete version of the arguments/rebuttals I'd make in a reopened discussion, I'd be happy to draft one for you.
