Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Draft Universal Code of Conduct for the Wikimedia Movement.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.

If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.

If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.

If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Update from President, WANZ

• December was relatively quiet due to a busy work period for committee members and the holiday season. Committee has developed a list of benefits of membership for the Wikipedia Aotearoa New Zealand Incorporated Society and these are being developed into a pitch document to circulate and recruit formal paid membership to the society in preparation for the AGM due in March. The intention is to recruit using meetups such as this and the upcoming WikiCon. The Committee will circulate how to become a member of as soon as we have the documention and membership registration process ironed out.

Update from Treasurer, WANZ

• Our recently opened bank account for the WANZ Incorporated Society now holds the balance of funds from the General Support Grant, and we are able to make payments from this account. I have applied to IRD for GST registration for the Society. During this month, I will prepare the Annual Report for 2022 and the content required for submission to Charities Services.Marshelec (talk)

• New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this. Project Contacts: DrThneed, Giantflightlessbirds and Ambrosia10.
• 2023 March WikiCon Wellington Registration is open. Please sign up if you're looking to attend so catering numbers can be confirmed.
• 2023 Annual Wikidata Fellowship Grant One New Zealand and two Australian fellowships available. Applications opened on 9 January and close on Sunday 26 February 2023. We are open to applicants from all backgrounds and skill levels, and support proposals that involve investigations. We are looking for proposals that are enthusiastic and innovative as opposed to requiring pre-existing technical skills. This is an opportunity to get paid to learn. Curate a data set, develop a prototype or undertake an investigation using Wikidata. You will be matched with a Wikimedian who will mentor you throughout your project offering resources, feedback and support. Check out the Annual Wikidata Fellowship Grant fellowship grant page for more details.

• Other suggestions for themes around events include Library Week, Conservation Week, International Volunteers Day, 24hr editathon for Ada Lovelace Day, WikiSource Women's History Month for Wikisource, Winter Olympics, Matariki Event, Library Week. We should think about the focus of the work - is it to onboard folk or to focus on content. Any further update?

Anything to update / discuss?

• There is a virtual editathon happening on the 8th of January as well as an in person editathon happening in Washington DC of the 9th of January to celebrate the life of Effie Kapsalis. See this page for more information.
• Ambrosia10 suggests that the group discuss who would be interested in organising editathons during 2023 and what topics they would like their editathons to cover. This would help the self nominated organisers plan for these events as well as ensure the WANZ was forewarned regarding possible funding requirements. For example Ambrosia10 is keen to organise a virtual editathon concentrating on generating content on 22 April 2023 which is Earth Day. Mike suggested Bug of the Year which finishes in February, as well as Des Helmore images, and West Coast Wikipedian at Large follow ups. Marshall pointed out NZ National Parks were in a parlkous state, and Mike volunteered to talk to his DOC contact in Head Office about support for an edit-a-thon in March or later.

• In other news, since late October 2022, there has been a prolonged outage of the highly useful Internet Archive bot.[1]. For those who don't know, this bot (when it works properly), will pass through an article, adding online archives to all cited online sources. This prevents future website changes at the source leading to link rot and degrading the quality of articles. It provides a massive time-saving for editors who wish to protect sources using the Wayback machine - especially for articles with lots of citations. The Phabricator ticket for the bug report I created is: [2]. In the last day or so, there has at last been an update from the volunteer developer. It looks like the IAbot may be working again by early next week. I will publish this through all channels when it is back up again. Marshelec (talk)

• Also obtained from a Wikimedia Foundation analyst, a report on the top 1000 most visited articles linked to Wikiproject New Zealand. See: [3]. A most interesting list of what catches readers attention. We can potentially use this as one input to prioritisation of improvement initiatives. • Ambrosia10 : Continued with project of biological genera named after women. Two publications coming up, one requiring a very clean dataset, so Siobhan has been linking the genera list to Wikidata items, making sure the journals are linked, and putting in Biodiversity Heritage Library requests to scan missing ones. Came up with the idea of Editing for Effie (see above), creating Wikidata and Wikipedia articles for women connected with the Smithsonian, Americans will be following up tomorrow with in-person events. Developing a research experience for undergrads proposal for getting experience with Wikidata and Bionomia. Has been invited onto the BHL cataloguing group, and working with some members on that group as well as other Wikipedia people to improve BHL collaborations with the Movement.

• Prosperosity: Finding photos of West Auckland localities, but hampered because two Catholic schools have closed and locked up their ground for summer. Also working on songs and albums, ofr example the top albums and songs for 2020 and 2021 (lots of Six60). Someone has volunteered to perform the GA review for West Auckland.

• Paora: Helped Axel with the 2023 New Year Honours (New Zealand), though there are still a couple of KNZMs red links (Mark Dunajtschik, Haare Williams). Lots of people seem to be dying: 32 on the 2022 in New Zealand need articles eg Jann Medlicott, Gordon Dryden.

• Beeswaxcandle: Missing s:Papuan Fairy Tales pages have been interpolated, still need validation (MD: page numbering needs to be checked too). Has been dealing with vandalism on Wikisource by a long-term abuser, username redacted here. Some new users have arrived, dumping unproofread text onto pages and not reading their Talk pages. Father Brown and Sherlock Holmes are now PD in the USA, and transcition and recording in Librivox is happening. (NB James K. Baxter and many others are now PD in NZ: see Mike's list.)

• Jim: Will be going to Effie Kapsalis service tomorrow. Fixing author name strings on Food Safety articles. Uploading NY Historical Society material, taking part in editing contest about paralympians. Note that new Public Domain Day novels include the Hardy Boys!

• Pakoire: Organising Wellington WikiCon. Making Space, a book about women in architecture in NZ has come out, so she created NZ Women in Architecture Wikiproject; was contacted by Architecture + Women NZ, so is organising an editathon in April for them. Created article about Michèle A'Court, improving New Zealand art, Māori culture, Te Maori, and Māori artists like Selwyn Muru and John Bevan Ford. At a recent Dowse show, with 11 or 12 artists featured, she noticed several had articles created by Lisa's project.

• David Nind: Working on Wikisource, including some problematic books with missing pages (such as Richard Seddon)—need to have a chat with Mike and Andrew to sort these out.

• Einebillion: Annual report about to be submitted. Mid-year report for WANZ funding due middle of Jan.

• User:Marshelec has achieved a personal milestone of getting his first article accepted as a WP:GA. See: Wangapeka Track. Also involved as a supporting reviewer for the Good article nomination of West Auckland, New Zealand. Also has some further involvement with the article Tellico Dam - a nominee for Good Article that he failed a while ago, leaving recommendations for improvement. Some flow-on work is also underway after approving Good Article status for Perry County, Tennessee. Marshelec is supporting a Flickr user who has an album of beautiful photos of a State Park in Perry County - Mousetail Landing State Park. This person lost all her household possessions and access to some websites (including Flickr) after a housefire in 2014. However, there is hope that the Flickr online help desk will be able assist her to recover access to her account - she has already agreed in principle to grant access to her photos for use in Wikipedia. This morning, Marshelec has published a new stub article: Blue Baths about the heritage listed baths building in the Government Gardens in Rotorua. Lots more to do on this, but it was a surprise to find there wasn't already ar article for this notable and most unusual building. See also Internet Archive bot and 100-most-visited articles above.

• User:Oronsay (in absentia) In the last month for NZ: started bio of historian Ann Trotter (1932–2022); transcribing Fairy Tales and Folk-Lore of New Zealand and the South Seas by Tregear on WikiSource; linking authors to their theses and supervisors via Mix'Match and Wikidata in the NZThesis Project. Other work: updating statistics and redlists and preparing meetup pages for Women in Red; merging dups via ORCID iD Constraints report and adding employer/educated at to resolve The Conservation author ID violations.

• SPNHC 2023 San Francisco conference (abstracts due Feb 6, conference May 28th). Siobhan, who has been working on these projects (see Annual Report) and attending conferences virtually in 2022 would like to attend in person. Could there be funding for her in the WANZ budget, with negotiated variation from unspent categories? Or if there's not room in our budget, could she apply to WMF emphasising that WANZ needs extra funding to allow for future conference attendance like this? Victoria recused, Mike and Marshall discussed.

• Open Library, an open-sourced library catalogue run off the Internet Archive. Anyone can catalogue a book and link its ID to Wikidata; David routinely does this to Wikisource works and editions.

• Wikipedia Library, now with much-improved search features (even just the JSTOR catalogue is good). 63 standard publishers and massive numbers of journals, and can request access to restricted sets of data such as Ancestry.com (publishers can free up 50 or 25 accounts for Wikipedians).

• Wikisource Scan Lab ([[:s:Wikisource:Scan_Lab]]) for scan repair
