Bolton Priory COI?
Can I just clarify that I do not believe that I have any COI with respect to Bolton Priory. I am not paid by it, neither am I clergy nor employee. My 'interest', such as it is, is that of a postgraduate medieval historian (a clue is in my nom de plume!) who lives nearby and observes its activities most weeks. Some of the material comes from its website, some is freely available within the church (the church magazine, for example), and much comes from the books cited as general references. My 'interest' is to place within the public domain an account of an institution that is still in continuous operation after 850 years.
Petreus Abaelardus (talk) 20:01, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Petreus Abaelardus: Thank you for the information, but when I see that you are uploading images like File:The Priory logo-colour (5).jpg and stating the source as your own work but crediting the author as "Bolton Priory, Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire, UK" and, to me, the tone of the article on the priory makes it seem like it's the church guidebook then behaviourally I think it was fair to raise the question of a COI possibly existing. I'm happy to remove the tag now (and have done so).
- The images need clarifying about who created a) the original subject material and b) who took the images. If for example File:Bolton Priory Live Nativity 2016.jpg is your photo of the church's poster for last years nativity then yes the image is your but the subject material belongs to the church and you cannot place that material into the public domain (which is the effect of the cc-by-sa-4.0 licence) without Wikipedia seeing the explicit permission of the copyright holder. As an aside the nativity last year was excellent and even a non-churchgoer like me enjoyed it. The shots of the architectural features don't have the same issue as most pieces are old enough to be out of copyright or if not would be covered by the freedom of panorama provisions of the UK copyright act but you should upload the original images not ones you have reduced for a church publication. The risk there, which is probably was in the mind of the person who nominated them for deletion, is that it looks like you have just cut and pasted someone else's images from a document you obtained and didn't create the images yourself.
- The article on the priory really needs a whole shed load of references adding as the majority of the article is currently unreferenced and apart from verifiability being a core Wikipedia policy, there is material in there that while not contentious is speculative. Anything like that needs a verifiable reference attaching to establish that the speculation is held by reliable sources and isn't just personal opinion of people editing the Wikipedia article. For example you included, and I removed, some paragraphs speculating on who the 14th century effigies in the north aisle may be. Whose published opinion is is that if the effigy is Edward III then the female effigy maybe Philippa of Hainault? If that isn't from a published reliable source then it doesn't belong in the article. I'm sorry if that last sentence sounds harsh but publishing of original research on Wikipedia isn't allowed and we have to rely on secondary or tertiary sources that already exist on the subject.
- There is no doubt that the priory and its subsequent history as a parish church are a notable subject but the article needs improving to bring it in line with Wikipedia house style and keep it on topic. For instance insights on Margaret Clifford and her threat to the Protestant succession are interesting but lack (apparent) relevance to this article unless there is some context to add and reference. Nthep (talk) 21:02, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification, and I will aim to address the points as time permits. As far as demonstrating the explicit permission of the copyright holder, presumably the Rector, the permission per se will be no problem, but could you point me to the actual mechanism for doing that?
- @Petreus Abaelardus: There's two aspects of this. The images of the church features - copyright lies with the photographer unless (and this isn't common at the level we are talking about) there is explicit written confirmation of transfer of the copyright holder to another party. So even if the rector commissioned the shots, he isn't the copyright holder unless there is a contract between him and the photographer to that effect. The subject matter is all so old that copyright of the subject material isn't an issue. The images of church posters - there are two copyrights, the copyright of the person who took the image that you have uploaded which is the same issue I just described but there is also the copyright of the person(s) who created the posters; again the copyright of those belongs to the person who created them and their permission is needed (the actual process is described at WP:CONSENT). I'm not sure those images of posters advertising the various events are worth worrying about. Wikipedia articles tend not to be populated with posters for specific events within a larger article. The shots of the building are worth the effort although it would probably be simpler just to take some of your own and upload those as your own work than trying to find out who the copyright holder is and getting consent. If it was a decent afternoon I'd pop along myself and take them - it's a bit gloomy today whereas yesterday would have been much better. Nthep (talk) 14:32, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
- PS you don't need to {{ping}} users on their own talk pages, a ping there is inherent in the software.
- It would be good if you could take some photos, else I could when back from holiday next week. The difficult one would be the chalice, which I assume lives in a safe Petreus Abaelardus (talk) 15:26, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
- Got most of them - although I forgot to photo the altar! You can find the uploaded images at commons:Special:ListFiles/Nthep but it's worth checking the images in Commons:Category:Priory Church of St Mary & St Cuthbert, Bolton Abbey and its sub-categories. hello,
I am curious why my draft for A VIOLENT MAN (movie) was declined? can you help me? thank you in advance
- Two lines about a film that has just released, two references; one of which is IMDB (not a reliable source) and the other is just a press release that the film is in a festival do not establish that this is a notable film. Please read WP:NFILM for the notability criteria for films. That page sets a minimum standard for film articles to achieve. Nthep (talk) 23:11, 30 October 2017 (UTC)

05:19:41, 24 November 2017 review of submission by Bleibloem
Dear Nthep, Can you please review the Draft:Oh_(North_Korean_defector) article. I have made some improvement and would like hear what you think.
Kind regard,
Bleibloem (talk) 05:19, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Bleibloem: I've read it but I still don't see what individual notability this confers on the individual - see WP:BLP1E. I see someone has added virtually as much information as you to List of North Korean defectors in South Korea and to my mind, unless and until there is more to be shown, that is the best place to mention the incident. I'm not decrying your work as creating an article from scratch about a person or event of limited newsworthiness is difficult but I (others may disagree) just don't think this case cross the notability threshold to merit it's own article. 2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting
As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. Nominations and voting will take place on the main project talkpage: here and here. Thank you for your time. For the co-ordinators, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:35, 8 December 2017 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – December 2017
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2017).
- Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.
- Wikimedians are now invited to vote on the proposals in the 2017 Community Wishlist Survey on Meta Wiki until 10 December 2017. In particular, there is a section of the survey regarding new tools for administrators and for anti-harassment.
- A new function is available to edit filter managers which can be used to store matches from regular expressions.
- Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is open until Sunday 23:59, 10 December 2017 (UTC). There are 12 candidates running for 8 vacant seats.
- Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.

Kathryn Tappen
Hi Nthep. Thanks for catching those edits. FWIW, I tried to clean up the article a bit and make it more Wikipedia-like. I'm still looking for more sources, but haven't find any others as of yet. Do you think Jrp288 and Nlopi761 might be connected? Just asking out of curiosity in case the Jrp288 suddenly starts editing again. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:30, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Marchjuly: I think you can lump those two accounts in with the earlier two who have spent their time trying to reprint Tappen's NBC bio as the Wikipedia article and it's all meatpuppetry. From discussion with the first one I think they are a succession of interns at NBC who are editing as ordered by their boss. To that extent I have some sympathy, if you are trying to get a foothold in broadcast journalism then you want to please the people who can make your career. My ire is for those at the top telling them to do it and failing to understand what Wikipedia is. Nthep (talk) 09:49, 5 January 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for clarifying things. Just a heads up about User talk:Melcous#adding photos and User talk:Melcous#Kathryn Tappen in case you weren't aware.
