thanks for work on chess

[edit]

Thanks for you work on chess, including both articles and in categories where you recently straightened out the capitalization of the category names for some women's title categories. I noticed that you also do a lot on chess players in wikidata. Quale (talk) 18:03, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Women chess players regularly played in the chess tournament in Beverwijk (the Netherlands), and I have been able to identify most of the players in the 1960s and 1970s, but I still have doubt about the names of some women. You have a lot of knowledge about this subject, so could you give it a try and have a look at these images? I could give a list of all women competing in 1964 and 1966. Vysotsky (talk) 20:43, 8 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't have any answers for you on this. Best of luck in finding out, though! -- Zyxw (talk) 08:11, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

old.fide.com

[edit]

To find news articles that were posted to www.fide.com before FIDE reorganized its website, one can go to old.fide.com. There is a link to old.fide.com from www.fide.com: from the main page, click "FIDE" (which gets you to www.fide.com/fide/about-fide), and go to the bottom of that page and click "FIDE Archive". One can consider fixing links to old FIDE articles to use old.fide.com rather than going to the Web Archive. Bruce leverett (talk) 15:35, 13 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I was initially replacing www.fide.com dead links with old.fide.com working links, but later decided it may be preferable to preserve the existing URL and add an archived URL since these are mostly used for inline citations. I have been using old.fide.com when adding new references. For others reading this, an example: http://www.fide.com/component/content/article/1-fide-news/6455-list-of-titles-approved-by-the-83rd-fide-congress.html is a dead link and https://old.fide.com/component/content/article/1-fide-news/6455-list-of-titles-approved-by-the-83rd-fide-congress.html is a working link. -- Zyxw (talk) 01:07, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It occurred to me to ask, is it better to use the Wayback Machine, or to use an organization's own archive of its own articles? Which is more future-proof? I couldn't think of a clear reason to prefer one or the other. Bruce leverett (talk) 05:00, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I found Wikipedia:Citing sources § Preventing and repairing dead links which states 2) Check for a changed URL on the same Web site and 3) Check for web archives. It does not say if that is the order of preference, though perhaps that is implied since the author used an ordered (numbered) list? -- Zyxw (talk) 07:00, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for finding this. As for whether preference is implied, your guess is as good as mine. Bruce leverett (talk) 00:56, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Help with template:JapanTour player

[edit]

Hi,

You've edited Template:JapanTour player before and was wondering if you could update it to the new url syntax - I tried but it didn't work. The format changed, for example, from https://www.jgto.org/?playerCd=2162 to https://www.jgto.org/en/player/2162/profile for Shingo Katayama.

Thanks Tewapack (talk) 19:16, 20 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Tewapack: Done. I also fixed a few other golf external link templates and have been updating golfer articles with dead links via the various template. -- Zyxw (talk) 05:28, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the fix and the other updates. Tewapack (talk) 17:30, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Something seems to be wrong with the template, it does not display the external link correctly [1] - with almost 250 uses. As you edited it the last time, can you fix it? Thanks. Pelmeen10 (talk) 08:34, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Pelmeen10: Done. The problem was caused by this bot edit to one of the templates. I updated the templates and added documentation. -- Zyxw (talk) 05:35, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Template:Ice Hockey Stats

[edit]

I've been looking at a couple of PHF player pages, and I see the "External Links" section on some of 'em that include the template above. For example: Audra Morrison. I've read the documentation for the template, and I see that it uses some information from Wikidata. I went and found Audra's Wikidata page, and it makes sense how the template makes use of the particular Wikidata items to create the external links to (e.g.) EliteProspects. The part that I can't figure out is how the Audra Morrison Wikipedia page knows that it links to that Wikidata page to look up those particular Wikidata properties. I don't see anything on her Wikipedia page source that makes that connection. Do you know how that magic happens? TIA. --MikeVitale 14:48, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@MikeVitale: Sorry for the late response. The only thing needed in the Wikipedia page is {{Ice hockey stats}}. That template can display ice hockey links which have a Wikidata property. If you are asking how her Wikipedia page is connected to her Wikidata page, take a look at Audra Morrison (Q89573326) where the Wikipedia section has a link to en:Audra Morrison and the Identifiers section contains ID numbers for Elite Prospects player ID (P2481) and HockeyDB player ID (P2602). The "magic" is in the MediaWiki software. That is also what allows the page Stephanie Anderson to display links to articles in the Arabic Wikipedia (ar), the Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia (arz), and the Finnish Wikipedia (fi). -- Zyxw (talk) 08:16, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the information. I appreciate your detailed response. MikeVitale 19:17, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

member parameter in {{Chess.com player}} template

[edit]

Hi – I noticed you've been adding a parameter "member" to invocations of {{Chess.com player}} (replacing invocations of {{Chess.com member}}), e.g. here and here. That parameter doesn't appear in the template's documentation or source, and it's listed as not valid in the parameter check. I didn't want to just remove it because I thought maybe you're preparing to expand the template or something. Please let me know – I'm creating a new article about a chess player and I want to include a proper chess.com link. Thanks! Joriki (talk) 05:51, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Joriki: That was a few months back. As I recall, I had negative feedback for adding any Chess.com links, particularly the member links (which have a Wikidata property) and even more so when adding both the player and member links. As a result, I initially commented out the member links. Later, as I edited chess player articles for other reasons, I moved the member ID into the existing template instead. I have no plans to update either template right now considering the feedback I had at the time. -- Zyxw (talk) 07:59, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

UCI stat

[edit]

Nice template you made with UCI stat but wouldn't it be easier to add it to wikidata and then include in sports links? Cheers Paulpat99 (talk) 03:10, 5 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That is the eventual plan, but I wanted to add it to a few articles first and see what sort of feedback there was about whether the link is useful. If it eventually becomes a Wikidata property, I'll remove the template from pages using {{sports links}}, but there are also a lot of articles using the individual templates such as {{Cycling Archives}}, {{ProCyclingStats}}, etc. Thanks. -- Zyxw (talk) 07:18, 5 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

IBDB templates

[edit]

Your recent edits now messed-up the appearance of titles [as shown in the references] with an apostrophe in them by making them appear in boldface when they shouldn't be, as they should be in italics. Here is three titles for an example:

References

Please fix the problem. Best, --Discographer (talk) 11:01, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Discographer (talk page watcher) Looks like template is being misused so should be replaced by a citation template such as cite web, Template:IBDB title/doc says "It is intended for use in the external links section of an article." Indagate (talk) 11:12, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's not misused. A problem was created, and it needs fixed! Best, --Discographer (talk) 11:17, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How is it not misused, goes against the template documentation. Citations should use a CS1/2 citation template such as Template: Cite web. An access date should be included for citations, and maybe an archive. It looks like a database so not a particularly reliable source anyway. Indagate (talk) 11:22, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Now just how is it okay to create a problem to something that was just fine for many many years, until this very day as a matter of fact, because of somebody's edits and that they even don't fix the problem, regardless of how it's being used by editors? --Discographer (talk) 11:39, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Discographer: Thanks for the examples. I reverted the template to the last version before my edits. The formatting problem when the template is used in a reference existed before I made any changes. As of right now this can be seen in your examples above. I've also made a copy of the template as it existed previously to show this: [1][2][3]
  1. '^ Dancin at the Internet Broadway Database
  2. '^ Ain't Misbehavin at the Internet Broadway Database
  3. '^ Lightnin at the Internet Broadway Database
-- Zyxw (talk) 16:08, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for fixing that! Please click on this very edit summary to see that I just re-added the space separating the apostrophe (') from the } to those three title examples. For some reason, this is needed to show the title in italics rather than in boldface when the title itself ends with an apostrophe. If the (') apostrophe touches the }, then the title appears in bold, so the space is needed for it to appear in italics. (This has nothing to do with those template edits though.) Best, --Discographer (talk) 16:37, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Zyxw,

I noticed you utilized this category a lot and it is now tagged for deletion for being an empty category. Is this a category that should be retained, even if it becomes empty? Because with these sorts of maintenance categories, we can add a {{emptycat}} tag to the page so that it doesn't appear on the daily Empty Categories list.

If it is a category that is no longer used, well, then it will be deleted in 6 days if it remains empty. Just thought I'd alert you as when I looked at the category history, it seemed like you had moved pages in and out of this category when it was appropriate to do so. Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 17:47, 9 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Heyo, nice job adding links to pages just a heads-up, Cycling Archives, ProCyclingStats, Cycling Quotient are all included in the sports links template. Cheers Paulpat99 (talk) 07:28, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I am aware of the sports link template, in fact I am the one who created it on the English Wikipedia in 2017 as a translated copy of a template created on the Norwegian Wikipedia in 2015. However, I usually try to use individual external link templates in articles — it gives more control over which links are displayed and also allows for things like displaying a person's name as shown at each website or adding links where the ID has not yet been added to the article's Wikidata item. In addition, the sport links template was discussed for deletion in April 2022 (though not deleted since there was no consensus). -- Zyxw (talk) 08:56, 12 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Medals in infoboxes

[edit]

Hi there. I've seen you add "medaltemplates-expand = yes" to infoboxes of a bunch of footballer articles. Is it convention or policy to expand the medal templates? Until today, my experience has been that they are not expanded in most footballer articles. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 19:55, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Some of those articles prior to my edit had medal templates without an infobox or displayed below the infobox, so when I added an infobox or merged them into an existing infobox I kept them displayed. A few had them already in the infobox so I updated it to match other players on that same team. So far the ones I looked at only had the one medal, so it is not really making the infobox too much larger. I am not sure of the reason that {{Infobox football biography}} dafaults to a collapsed view rather than an expanded view like {{Infobox sportsperson}} and others. If you or someone else disagree with showing those, feel free to remove |medaltemplates-expand=yes. -- Zyxw (talk) 20:48, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks for the explanations. I don't feel strongly about this issue. I just generally like to be aware of conventions so as not to undo other people's work out of ignorance. Robby.is.on (talk) 21:25, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
What's your rationale for moving medals outside infoboxes at Alex Nyarko and Kwame Ayew? The articles look much better to me with medals inside the infoboxes… Robby.is.on (talk) 21:29, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Since you questioned the use of |medaltemplates-expand=yes and the majority of the articles for players on that team already had medal templates outside the infobox, I figured I should leave them outside of the infobox. I'm not going edit any others and will go back to other tasks. -- Zyxw (talk) 21:44, 23 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
